As disappointed as I am with the Lizzo allegations , I am old enough and I've been people watching for too long to be fooled into thinking that she doesn't have unresolved issues that belie her apparent confidence.

The definition of body neutrality sounds more like what body positivity should be/could be. Definitely nothing neutral about holistically and functionally taking care of one's body.

I’m honestly not shocked by this. I have been side eyeing Lizzo ever since she twerked at a basketball games in front of kids. I knew it was all a facade and Lizzo comes off as very insecure which is why I’m not surprised by this.

I remember being in middle/ starting high school and the first time I heard “body positivity.” This movement started because it was for women and men who had skin conditions, missing limbs, no limbs, wheelchairs etc. Overall, great video!

Yes! Thank you for this video! I really want to emphasize the last 10 mins bc those are the same thoughts i had about including plus size models in the body positivity movement like they are still very ideal and unattainable body shapes just call them models not body positive ones (cough cough Ashley Graham). But the way my esteem is set up, ideal im just thankful to have a functioning body aka body neutrality

definitely an important conversation. i like the idea of body neutrality. it feels very genuine. to me, there is a problem with the idea that the wrong people can co-opt a movement like fat positivity. the reality is that fatphobia affects people of all sizes, even when it isn't apparent. it is true fat people have very real struggles day to day because the world is often not made with them in mind. but the idea that fat = unhealthy is deeply rooted in a way that can jeopardize the health of thin people, too. we should accept people of all sizes, and we shouldn't shame skinny people for wanting a better world for fat people. i don't mean to recenter the movement around skinny people, that kind of shift in focus is definitely wrong. but we need to see all edges of the picture. im interested in where you get the 1989 date. intersectionality was coined in 1989, but had more to do with race, sexuality, and gender. from poking around wikipedia sources, it looks like body positivity was started by two white women in 1996 and had more to do with eating disorders. i haven't taken a lot of time looking, so i could be off base. It's also odd to me that you say it's been around since 60s-70s, when most cite the beginnings with victorian dress reform. the movement in the 60s was mostly upheld by two white men, but victorian dress reform was purely middle and upper class women, and that seems more pertinent to the conversation. these things aren't hugely important to the discussion, but it does make me wonder the entire scope of research you did. if the history wasn't your focus and you just glossed over it, i suppose that's understandable. i would also like to gently urge you to think about the language you've used while talking about motherhood. birthing children and the physical and hormonal changes are something transgender men or nonbinary people can experience, and that does not mean they suddenly have a woman's body. it is a hard concept to deconstruct, i am the first to admit. but in a conversation about inclusivity and body image, it is worth exploring.

Here is my definition of body positivity. We love our bodies and take care of bodies in a healthy way. From the hair on our head to our feet. Making awareness of different skin types and skin tones is what I think is body positivity. Informing women who have PCOS on how they can help themselves. People giving tips on how to take care of their oral hygiene or hygiene in general. I think the movement should be about taking care of the body in general. Even as a bigger person, we should try to take care of bodies. Working out or eating better is not a bad thing. Getting checkups from the doctors is okay. People shouldn’t be made fun of their body types, skin color, skin types, hair types. Height etc. We should embrace ourselves but also takes care of ourselves and make sure we are our healthiest selves.

As someone who suffers from body dysmorphia, I can understand the struggle that people might go through. The pressure to fit in is so so hard. It is very unfortunate and sad from all angles.

How body positivity changed from beginning message of the movement, And also how bodies are valued in society are all things that play into this discussion.

I believe that body positivity and body neutrality are both aspects of total wellness that should be considered together. As in appreciating simply being and learning to become comfortable in one’s skin no matter how that skin may look. And mind you this is not always easy and that is OK that is where these concepts should converge and aid the mental strain and prevent that toxic positivity phenomenon. It seems to me, as like many things in a heavily socialized environment, aspects of body positivity that share neutrality are watered down/lost in a pressure to adhere to a unspoken consensus of what constitutes as acceptable for the marginalized bodies. Crazy to think about but it’s everywhere in our commercialized world. The “body positivity movement” shouldn’t just stop there at just merely acceptance but dig into how our social culture inadvertently stifles growth beyond the looks. Why do people feel unacceptable? How do we contribute to it? Where does this begin? Glad you talked about the aging bodies bit, I could talk about that for ages but nuff said! Great vid that ties nicely to the last one :)

To echo a thought I heard from others, one does not exist until one could be marketed to. It seems a desired goal for many identity-raising efforts, or maybe simply a un-self-reflective goal of many efforts, is to be sold something. That may not be the only or main goal obviously, but when that goal is a goal of a movement, the whole movement can be at risk for failure.
