This week on Dining on a Dime, host Lucas Peterson heads to the Near West Side of Chicago to sample one of Chi-Town’s most famous, iconic street foods: the Maxwell Street Polish sausage. Jim’s Original, established in 1939, sells the meal 24 hours a day.

Absolutely delicious stopped there at 3am after coming from airport- legit line was filled with senior citizens-yes at 3am, I didn’t want mustard and got yelled at by the crowd to just let them make it they way they make it-got two wrapped to go-didn’t know it was a big deal-blown away with flavor wish I could’ve driven back to get another one. Very good

Eater- read your comments. THIS MAN HERE IS THE FRANCHISE. get rid of all the other reviewers and hosts. they suck. They're not likeable. they're pedantic and condescending, pretentious and irritating. Most of all he doesn't come across as uppity snoot slumming it at a foodie place like the rest of those douches and hipster foodies. He's one of the people, not a person that would never have gone to a bad neighbourhood without a camera crew. This guy is a rare talent- do you know how hard it is to find someone to eat on camera- and have people like them??! Watching someone eat is inherently annoying. I can't stand watching my own wife freaking eating without wanting to backhand her face and send her flying over the table. This guy is a prize. hold on to him. Feed him. Nurture him. Give him what he wants. Fire the rest. that is all. the people have spoken. Up vote if you agree.
@John77Doe
@John77Doe 8 жыл бұрын
You allow your wife to sit and eat with you at the same time. That is where you are going wrong. An Iranian friend of mine has his wife bring the dishes to the table. Then she quietly waits in another room, and eats after the men have finished their meal. Men and women were not meant to dine together. Watching a woman eat destroys the illusion of feminine delicateness that makes the fairer sex so desirable to the better sex.

I'm gonna make a pork-chop sandwich of my own out of curiousity, since we don't have that in NYC. From what I can tell, it's as simple as frying a pork chop on a grill with s&p and onions, and putting on a hamburger bun? Sounds like a very basic pork chop recipe, except we add a bun to "sandwich" it. Maybe the bun combination makes it special? Whatever I feel like trying it.
@eater
@eater 8 жыл бұрын
+Victor Ha The special part is the bone-in bit, vs a boneless pork chop. The bone gives the meat moisture and flavor. The sandwich also has spicy mustard and super spicy hot peppers as well. Let us know how your experiment works. Thanks for watching!
@victorha9923
@victorha9923 8 жыл бұрын
+Eater Just made it. It definitely is a satisfying late-night combo. Tried all the sugggestions (bone-in, brown mustard, sport peppers). It's a nice alternative to sausages and hot dogs because it highlights the natural sweet pork meat taste.Thank you, Eater, now I know that pork-chop sandwiches are not a bizarre fictional invention mentioned in some online GI Joe cartoon spoof, but a real thing, and a delicious one at that.
@victorha9923
@victorha9923 8 жыл бұрын
+Eater post-script to last message... I'm not just paying lip service; this is seriously a good sandwich idea and you all should try making it for a late night craving. It's no saintly sandwich in terms of health (the cut of pork is a bit fatty), but I feel it's still healthier than hamburgers (less fat probably) and hot dogs (it's fresh pork). And you might actually prefer it taste-wise as well over the other two.

While it is good to see the Polish get it's props (IF, and only IF it is Kosher -that's how we roll in the 'Go), you cannot, standing in Chicago, tell viewers that Hot Dogs "taste like cooked bologna". While that may be true for grocery store hotdogs (i.e..Ball Park), in Chicago we only recognize Vienna Hotdogs, which taste nothing like "cooked Bologna". If you were standing in L.A., and said that, well then, O.K. perfect comment- put some catsup on it as well. Please try a Chicago hot dog before you make a generalized statement about hotdogs while standing in Chicago.

I used to hit the original corner, generally later in the evening. The major pain in the rear was constantly being accosted by the street vendors pushing socks and videos. I don't have that happening after the move, nothing else has changed, at least to me. Jim's is like a beacon in the night pulling people in, and I like that. I like the feeling of being able to pull in and hang out. I guess I'm glad there's no inside seating. I'm also glad that Lucas didn't rave about these being the best dogs in the city. He explained what he felt about them instead of just saying "These are Chicago's best hot dogs, bar none". The polish with mustard and onions is right on, and this is the way fries should be served at every dog stand. I swear, someday I'm gonna try the pork chop.

I couldn't tell, did sauerkraut go on them? Prefer mine with, but either way a sausage sangwich is amazing... I'm half dago and half pollock, Chicago is like my food paradise, honest to God, their Italalian and Polish cuisine is amazing, i also love chinese food, but I was ethnically blessed with mom and grandma's homemade Italian and Polish cuisine, God I love food...Was that a Zeppala he was eating at the end of video?

That is actually grilled onions on the polish. I can't believe he didn't mention them. That is what really makes the polish. That smell of those onions will stick on all your clothes. My girlfriend once went there and she said even the baby smell like the polish. LOL. All over the city you will see people try to imitate those grilled onions but honestly I have never seen anyone be able to do it. If you ever come to Chicago, you must go to Jim's. It's right near downtown so it's pretty central to anywhere you visit here.
