Excellent video and thanks for posting. I'm definitely "old school". I wish they had never quit using the 1928 prayer book. Also the 1940 hymnal is head and shoulders better than the 1982 version. I was confirmed in 1974 and the words of the 1928 book "spoke" to me in a way the new on just does not. I was a music student in college and we used the 1940 hymnal as a source book for studying music theory. No other hymnal could top it. Why change something when you've already got it right?

I love this video explanation. Especially for an evangelical not raised in this tradition. But that music...I feel like I’m in some Christopher Nolan movie, haha.

I worship online with St Luke's Anglican Church in Sedona Arizona. The Bishop has a bumper sticker that reads "Real Episcopalians use the 1928 Prayer Book." The thing about this form of English is that you can memorize it. It sticks. It also happens to be beautiful and poetic and in a culture which is starved for the beautiful and the poetic, it is absolutely totally different from the vernacular that surrounds us 24/7.

quite consice i like that, i appreciate that you put it all in short form. On the other hand I am not a fan of repeating the same prayers other than to remind yourself of a value. If ur friend is in the room why would you keep saying the same thing to them...
@ryanjordan62954 жыл бұрын
Some words are so good they're worth saying over and over again. When you're deeply in love with someone, you tend to speak less, and say more of the same things over and over (I love you, I'm sorry, thank you, etc.). You can keep finding reasons to say the same thing! Not to mention, many of these prayers were composed by saints filled with the Holy Spirit, and steeped in the Scriptures. When you pray them intentionally and with feeling, they are very powerful.

Not to mention they are great for including in get well cards to people who are not Episcopalian. The words are so flowery and wonderful, uplifting etc. that people think I’m a genius. Lol! They give compliments.

An enjoyable video as usual. I'm not Episcopalian but have great sympathy toward the Anglican Church. One question I do have though, is your statement that the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ. My understanding is that whereas the RC affirms transubstantiation the Anglican Communion affirms the spiritual presence of Christ. May I ask what your view is? I stumbled across your video because I'm trying to use the BCP for my personal devotions, including communion since my church does not serve communion but on very rare occasions. Also, is your pronunciation the standard pronunciation of "collect?" I always that it was the same as standard English. Or is there a difference between British and American English here?

Well this is an Episcopal Church (Anglicanism in America) so he, of course, doesn't have a British Accent

How God’s body is experienced in the Eucharist is explained in the BCP. It says God is somehow present but does not define it in absolute black and white terms if I remember right. It leaves some of the mystery and wonder to the believer in my opinion, but that is how I feel it works. I think sometimes we try to explain God too much thus removing some of the wonder, mystique and intrigue.

I also studied the scripture in ancient languages. In Greek text when ll aorist form of a verb is used it is an action committed in the past yet continues to have present and future action. The crucifixion is this way. Christ was crucified and resurrected only once but this past action continues to save people presently and people who are not yet born. So that is a mystery of how Christ can be present each time Eucharist is celebrated.

@@ooferdoofer2452 Neither do I.:)

@Common Sense Isn't Common Yeah, I’m definitely not comfortable with the idea that Christ is being crucified over and over again.

The 1979 BCP isn't deserving of the title. It is a RADICAL departure from the classic, authentic Prayer Book tradition (which the 1928 American edition manages to preserve). It is very similar to the 1985 'Book of Alternative Services', of the Canadian Church (indeed, the BAS was modelled upon the '79 BCP). Fortunately for Canada, although, unfortunately, the BAS has widely supplanted our great 1962 BCP here, the Church has been honest enough to not call this book the 'Book of Common Prayer'.
@donqtello5747 жыл бұрын
Father, the bread and wine become sacred symbols of his body and blood. This is according to the 39 articles anyway which we are supposed to believe and swear to uphold in our ordination vows.
@bwilliamleo78726 жыл бұрын
Donqtello Clearly You made a misunderstanding of Articles, they did not involve in too much about this, to clearly call the Eucharist just a “symbol”. It was even a very controversial issue at Elizabethan time. But now, within the Anglican communion, real presence is almost a consensus (may in different forms). Personally, I will not attend any so called Anglican Church denying real presence. And for articles, they are not emphasized too much now in CoE, the canon law has been obviously softened the issues regarding to the articles. Many high churchmen just simply ignore the articles, or explain them in their way.

The BCP has dropped out of favour for the main service over here. Been replaced by Common Worship. The BCP does not meet the needs of modern Christians as its theames are judgement and penance. Certainly not suitable for seasons such as Easter where the emphasis is on celebrating the resurrection. Also what was clear in 1662 is not so clear in meaning now. Language has changed. Suprised how popular it still is in North America. First BCP sung eucharist was in Canada.
@tatehamilton7586 жыл бұрын
Philip Douglas what else should Easter be celebrating besides the resurrection???
@vivianruthsawyer69285 жыл бұрын
The BCP in the U.S. was compiled in 1979, which explains its pertinence over the British 1662. We don't have Common Worship in the U.S., and don't need it, because we don't have to have Parliament approve new versions of the BCP.
