I read Enoch when I was much younger and what struck me was the parallels between the watchers and the Greek gods in their interactions with humans. Teaching, corrupting, interbreeding and playing at warfare with humans or demigods as champions or pawns. Back when I believed these things literally it seemed like a potential explanation for other religions at the time, now of course it is more obviously due to cultural contact and the spread of ideas around the Mediterranean.

If you think about it, in any interpretation of the Bible does God say I am the only God ever? No, he says, "There are no other Gods before me." Just something to think about. Also included in Enoch is the Divine Council. An assembly of lesser celestial beings over which a supreme God sits.

Enoch must have been an established figure before the writing of Genesis. There's no way they just offhandedly remarked that "God took him" without the reader being expected to already know the full story.

Seems plausible. A reminder at least that for every pieve of history that we have preserved evidence of, there are many that were culturally known, accepted, debated, and forgotten. I think of this often when watching documentaries on serial killers- we look back at their criminal history, because it was recorded (sometimes), but we rely on anecdotal evidence for most of their lives. This is true for all of us. Prior to the internet, just how much of any average person's life is recorded? A diary? A portrait? 0.001% of their full life. My point is that recorded history is a drop in the bucket, and ultimately what we "know" could well be flawed. We must remember the 5 Cs of historical studies.

Yes, Enoch, and Adam and Abraham were all "established figures before Moses wrote about them BUT we have none of the books Moses said he used as reference for Genesis and Forst Enoch was NOT among the booka Moses listed. Bubba, if you listened to the video at all you should have heard that First Enoch was written in 200-300 BC while Enoch was taken to heaven in 3000 BC. Clearly Enoch did NOT write the book of Enoch although the book clearly claims that he did. Here is the time line ~3000 BC Enoch is taken to heaven in Genesis 5 and never returns.. ~2500 BC Noah and the Flood. Noah never even met Enoch and Enoch left before both the Flood and fallen "angels". ~1500 BC Moses writes Genesis. ~200-300 BC Book of Enoch written. So Exactly how does Moses use the Book of Enoch as a reference if it was firt written 1000 year AFTER Moses wrote Genesis??? Think about that Genius.

Bear in mind an important fact when reading Enoch: Firstly there are three books of Enoch. In antiquity they spoke of only one. Scholars are fairly sure that there are two different authors. The author of the first book, written before Christ. And the author of both the second, and the third books, dated to after Christ. They compare phrasing and language that differs between the two. As well as language usage in the different eras. When purchasing an edition of "The book of Enoch.", you usually will have all three books, in the one volume.

I do not believe that the Book of Enoch was a "spin-off" at all! In fact, there is evidence that it is much older than the Bible and was already a widely known part of literature when the Bible was written, hence there was no reason to elaborate when it was briefly mentioned in the Bible. The writer assumed everyone already knew what he was talking about, probably because they did! It is a complex piece of literature that should be respected.

It makes sense that Sadducees who were more concerned about preserving tradition rejected the supernatural, therefore Enoch would have been disqualified simply because it alluded to the supernatural. Interesting presentation
@johnbreitmeier3268 Жыл бұрын
You completely misunderstood. 1) It was the Pharisees who became the rabbis not the Sadducees and that excluded the books of Enoch from the Old Testament simply because they were trash written 2000 years after the events. 2) The Sadducees were the Aaronic priests and the Hasmoeen nobles (also priestly clans ) who objected to the Pharisees adding the Talmud to the Torah as a second set of laws that pushed out the preist hood. 3) The Rabbis were allPharisees and mostrly Judeans, not of the tribe of Levi. THEY set the Old Testament canon.

@johnbreitmeier3268 Жыл бұрын
@@woodshed_moments No, I did read it in context. It is just that everything you said is factually wrong. The Sadducees did NOT reject the supernatural at all. They rejected the resurrection and the Talmud or "traditions of the elders" as Jesus called them. Jeus preached the resurrection making the Seduces mad and the Talmud making the Pharisees mad. IF you still think I missed your point then make it more clearly and precisely. Don't day I did not read what you wrote which is simply inncorrect.
@woodshed_moments Жыл бұрын
@johnbreitmeier3268 Labeling something "factually incorrect", but then choosing to substantiate it with culture and the traditions of man over what we have is disinforming people... this is politics and nothing more. I'm sorry you have not made your point, but you have let everybody know where you're coming from, I'm sorry you just have not made a point, and still haven't made a point- but the direction you're going to it's the supported institution over truth that has been revealed through time, that is the problem you're having here. "For the Sadducees say that there is neither a resurrection, nor angels, nor spirits, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all." [Acts 23:8] You were saying? The word of God actively unpacked and discredited everything you said, so again, the more you talk the more you're telling people what you are not, and that is valid nothing you said is correct from a biblio Centric perspective, but if I was Catholic or Judaistic, in some Orthodox manner, I can understand the intentional conflation... Bottom line is what you choose to support your argument with, is not bibliocentric - therefore moot.

Just for extra's ... not religious, but I love how ancient texts and traditions have been shaping our collective memory. Enoch and Idris are not the same persona. Enoch and Noah are the same, because what a lot of people don't know is that early biblical manuscripts were written in the same language but different dialects. And in some dialects you have to refer to a known person by adding a/e/i which later became the prefix al-/el-/il- and also became the suffix -al/-il/-el. Those strict dialects add the prefixes so that people would know that the text only applies to the referred person and doesn't apply to anyone with the same name. That's why a lot of texts use the name Abraham/Abrahim/Ibrahim while the real name is Brahim/Brahem/Braham (Bra - him means without worries). Same story for name Noah/Enoch, Dris/Idris, Yonas/Yunes/Yunis/Yunus, Ya'cob/Ya'cub/Ya'cup and so forth. Translators saw the names as separate because they couldn't distinguish between dialects.

@@prod.mohomid Now there are many bad things about the books of Enoch but applying the term son of man to Enoch is NOT one of them Read the Biblical book of Ezekiel. I am going through it daily roght now. In almost every chapter GOG himself calls Ezekiel "son of man. The term jsut means "HUMAN". Yes, Daniel refers to the Messiah as the Son of Man and Jesus usually calls himself the Son of Man rather than the Son of David or even the Son of God in order to emphsize that he is indeed human as well as God. Mow it depends on the translation you read as to whether Enoch is actually called the son of human as just human or as designating him as the Messiah. The first is not a problem. The second is blasphemy. Since I cannot read the Ethiopian and the scholars differ, I simply do not know on this point. But there are many other reason that first Enoch is trash.

The Ethiopian Orthodox church, with one of the earliest christian churches, has 81 books in the bible compared to 66 in most churches. The book of Enoch is on of the books of the Ethiopian church. The book was lost to the rest of the world until the 18th century explorer James Bruce came across the book and took some copies to Europe. The discovery of the dead sea scrolls put the book back into the spot light and the Ethiopian version, which had been preserved in it's entirety for millennia were identical. You see, before christianity, there was alredy a strong judaic presence and many of the old testment books already existed in the area. After Ethiopia became the second nation to officially adopt christianity, the old books and the judaic culture that florished in the area for more than a thousend years were fused with the new testment books. This is the reason the Ethiopian church is very unique compared to churches in Europe. The books were preserved in the isolated mountain monastries and the judaic culture such as dietary restrictions, preserving both sunday and saturday as the Sabbath, removing shoes before going into the church building and the like still live on to this day. We could say that the Ethiopian church is the legacy of both judahism and oriental orthodox christianity.

The Bible as it is today wasn’t compiled until the 5th century. Centuries after the death of Jesus. Prior to that many different books were used by many different sects of Christians. Some of those books were included in the Bible, many were not. The books that were used in the Bible were compatible with the theology taught by Paul. That’s why modern Christianity is properly called Pauline Christianity. The books that didn’t attest to the validity of Pauline teachings were not included.

The books themselves or also scholarly opinions as well? I'm a bit confused about your idea. There's quite obvious fabrications like the Gnostic gospels and the apocrypha. They don't follow scripture. They infact directly contradict the bible outright in the majority of the texts. Enoch however seems to follow the bible very closely and is the only "non canonical" text referenced multiple times let alone once in the old and new testament. Enoch 3 seems bunk but Enoch 1 and 2 seem to very closely follow scripture and fill voids in the texts where things aren't explained in depth and it talks heavily about the end times and the coming of Jesus. Jesus even quotes it. I don't know if I believe in Enoch personally but I lean towards it being real and canonical. If the bible is correct, then yes scripture will be destroyed and erased only leaving the memory of it in our heart and soul. So a conspiracy that Enoch was hidden by the people in power makes sense. They wouldn't want you to know about the stuff in Enoch and believe it. It talks a lot about how the governments of the world will be run by demon hybrids and how we'll all be enslaved and lied to by them. Enoch is super fascinating whether it's canonical or not. There, the historical topic of the Sumerians and their theology was avoided like the plague. Is it because in Proverbs 30:4 kjv, king Solomon describes the God of the earth as the Sumerian Anunnaki deity Enki? Or is it because the Song Of Songs has so many similarities with the love poems written to commemorate the romance between Ishtar and Dumuzi? Does Solomon’s temple have a volume of 36,000 cubic cubits to refer to the 36,000 years Dumuzi reigned over the earth before the flood, as documented in the Sumerian Kings List? So, According to Sumerian texts, Enki is associated with the number 40, he is the god of wisdom, the God of the earth, credited with the creation of mankind, has a first earth born son named Dumuzi who has been delegated all rights and privileges that pertain to the number 40 and who is going to take over after Marduk, Enki’s oldest son. He was born on Nibiru. Anyway, Instead of starting by saying it’s a super interesting book and that even Jesus quoted from it, he is being an awful toss pot.

That Paul quotes the book of Enoch is a lie. Jude says "Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about them: “See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone, and to convict all of them of all the ungodly acts they have committed in their ungodliness, and of all the defiant words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” There are lots of words said by all Biblical characters not recorded, even some which are later referred to by someone else. The Bible does in an instance or two quote popular culture or writings from the time in order to make a point, usually a negative point comparing what the people had heard or been taught versus what Jesus teaches.

I agree that it doesn't really make any sense that the story of Enoch would have been 'spun-off' from the minor mention in genesis.. Seems like a much more reasonable and logical assumption that the story already existed before genesis was written down. As it only makes sense to include the short reference to Enoch in genesis if the story was already popularly known. It would be like the new testament referencing Moses, and then claiming the story of Moses was only invented afterward.

Not really. 1 and 2 Enoch were always in the Ethiopian Bibles, both Christian (Tewahedo Orthodox) and Jewish (Beta Israel); it's just that very early on in both Christianity and Rabbinical Judaism, there was fierce debate over their authenticity and canonicity, as recorded in the Babylonian Talmud, for example, and so they got chopped by most denominations. That said, later groups did consider them heretical, which is likely why so few copies from after a certain point outside of Ethiopia survive. He talks about all this in the video.

7:59 Enoch himself is only apparently being made the recipient of the title, in fact this is how prophecy works, namely the prophet speaks as if he impersonates another character that he shares something in common with (humanity and righteousness). This manner of prophecy is also found in Psalm 22 where king David is impersonating the crucified Jesus and speaking as though inhabiting Jesus' body and spirit at the time of the prophecy.

I don't understand how you know that the Book of Enoch was a spin-off... How can we prove the Book of Enoch came 100% *after* the final compilation of Genesis. It could very well have been that church leaders didn't like the Book of Enoch, so they downplayed it, but gave him a brief summary in Genesis to appease Enoch's readers. Or, maybe, Genesis authors thought, "We'll give the reader of Genesis a brief mention that there was a flood because we don't have room in this already very long book to go into detail; if the readers want more, they can go read Enoch: There was a flood, and a guy named Enoch. Moving on...."

That's the intriguing and frustrating about it. Which is real? Is it all real? The people over the thousands of years who collated the Bible tried their best in making a cohesive narrative--but is it mundane or divine? I guess it wont be until death, and hopefully the end of times and (hopefully) the re-establishment of the new earth will we get the bigger picture. But for now, we can only believe what we believe is to be the right answer, and hope for the best.

@Drinker_Of_ Milk We know that somebody wrote it. We have no evidence that it is in any way associated with the writer/writers of the original documents. Fanfic is a term applied to work about a particular subject that is not necessarily associated with the work, like various fan Star Trek novels. So in the current understanding it is fanfic until proven otherwise. You could go out there and prove a connection and this will take it out of the fanfic category, until then it's fanfic.

@Drinker_Of_ Milk Fanfic is just an account that is not factual or in the case of established fictional narratives not canon. Actually, a small correction from a Jew studying Kabbalah: In modern Judaism, even in the strict Rabbinic tradition, the statements of the Zohar about Enoch have been restored, just with the caution that study of them should be confined to Jews who have met various qualifications (depending on the exact Rabbi) and commentators in the past 400 years on b. Hagigah who have met those qualifications have written extensively on how the story of Elisha b. Avuyah doesn't contradict the Zoharic statements, but is rather a cautionary tale about restricting access to these ideas to the unworthy. Even those who don't study Kabbalah will often admit that Enoch=Metat-ron, but state that "only those who study Kabbalah know what that means", and this is considered perfectly fine. Note that this especially true given that various Midrashic texts link Enoch with Elijah, and some explain this as a reference to both of them being angelified. Note also that the Zohar seems to indicate a Jewish idea of an Ur-Enoch, that was holy and studied before Sinai, but because Moses said that Israelites should abandon the study of the book, the current version was corrupted by "pagans" (probably pre-Islamic Arabs and surrounding people) and failed attempts were made by non-Mainstream Jewish communities in the late Second Temple Period to Remonotheize the book, and this version was later Christianized, and lead to what we know as 1 Enoch (and it is possible to read that the belief is also that the same Ur-Enoch lead to a different tradition that lead to 2 Enoch)

The book of Enoch is very good. I read it followed down the rabbit hole and eventually figured it out. There is five books in the series and the moral of the story is. The angles took human wife's which go told them they could not do God could not take care of it because of his duty station so he trained someone to run things for him Enoch. Enoch was human and had a wife a son the son had a wife and Enoch had a grandchild Noah. Enoch left all this behind to serve God. Moral of the story Enoch followed God and was found perfect. The training is outlined in the book and the angles did not follow God they were disobedient. God gave Noah the plans for the ark to be saved old testament.and Enoch returned home for a year after training to spend with his family and say goodbye because he couldn't come back. Then God took Enoch and made him the tetragrammaton. Then God went to deal with his disobedient angles. He shut the door of the ark. And it started to rain. The rest of history. In The end of the books were saved and left for all mankind for all generation's. The moral of the story is be obedient to God.

The writing style of that era all sounds similar. Books attributed to 300bc to 300ad all have much more detail, a good level of prophesy and fate built into the text. The earlier books such as the first five of the Holy Scriptures of the Hebrews are pretty brief, with a loaded sentence here and there with no further explanation (the race of The Great Men of Renown for instance, with no listing of these renowned men). Early books also tent to do just cause and effect. Free will choices make one obedient to God or contrary to God's intent and therefore likely filled with sinful and murderous actions. Most of the stories in Genesis are brother vs brother stories. That would reappear in the tales of David and his rival brothers.

I read that the elohim and nephilim were based on stories of gods and demigods (Gilgamesh, Theseus, etc.) in other cultures being interpreted through their own religion. Stories of demigods would have been popular and common in the middle east. That explanation fits the lines in Genesis better than the interpretation in Enoch.

@mcshiro19414 жыл бұрын
Elohim refers to any spiritual being, God is referred to as Elohim aswell as angels and Satan and even us as humans that are made in Gods image. The nephilim are the off springs of the fallen angels and humans which was a corrupt race that wasn’t fully human which is why God brought the flood and later asked Joshua and even all the way to king David to attack certain nations that would have contained these nephilim. As a believe in the bible and from a lot of research I’ve done on ancient civilizations and pegan religions I tend to believe that the stories of demigods and titans and giants and star men found in so many historic stories are based off the bible and are just other civilizations not fully understanding the story of the fallen angels
@Dunkle0steus4 жыл бұрын
@@mcshiro1941 That's quite a lot of text, but there are aspects of your theory that I think need more support. As a viewer of this channel, you should be fully aware that the bible is a collection of books and writing by people. Analysis of the bible can confirm this, and there's ample evidence. That means when you analyze the bible or other ancient religious or sacred texts, you have to examine the historical context it existed in. The writers of such books have their own motives, goals, and ideas, and that influences what they write. The timing of the writing of Genesis was originally dated to the 10th century BCE, but modern analyses tend to favour the 6th century BCE. The story of Gilgamesh dates to at least the 18th century BCE, and stories of Greek demigods may date to the Mycenaean period in Greece (before ~1200 BCE). The Iliad takes place around 1200 BCE, but its written form probably dates to a few centuries later. This shows that demigods existed in myths and legends in a variety of forms throughout the eastern Mediterranean centuries before the composition of the book of Genesis, which first mentions the Nephilim. These stories can't be based off the bible, because the bible was written after, thus it's far more likely (as I said before) that the bible bases the Nephilim on those earlier stories. If you're going to talk about the history of the bible, you have to remove yourself from your personal attachment as a religious text. The philosophy, meaning, and theology of the bible have to be separated from the historicity of it. If you can't do that, and every theory you come up with relies on the idea that the bible must be the source of all other stories and mythologies, you can't have an honest conversation on this topic.
@mcshiro19414 жыл бұрын
Dunkleosteus i understand genesis is written later but it’s accounts of past history inspired by God. I’m not basing my theory on the fallen angels and giants purely off religious texts but also off stories found in many history civilizations that are based off the same topics. We are also looking at the scriptures from a different lens. I believe the word of God is inspired by God through his accounts in the people who wrote them and so that is the standard I have on this topic and I take other religious texts with a grain of salt. I see them references great points that help figure out the topic but ya. Sorry for making it super long. This is one of the those topics that takes a full conversation to explain ya know. @@paradisecityX0 I interpreted MC Shiro's post as an understanding of the bible as if it is the literal word of God. There are many who believe that bible should be taken as literal truth, and that the words written in it are infallible. MC Shiro's position is that all the other cultures in the near east are just misinterpreting the stories in the bible (which hadn't been written yet). I think his view point puts too much weight on the bible. It relies on the bible being infallible. He starts with his conclusion, that the bible is absolute, and derives explanations for what he observes from his conclusion. I assume he is doing this because he refuses to see the bible as only a book instead of as a metaphysical source of knowledge.

Games movies life it's a reenactment Recreation will you play the roles and we have choices that we can make to alter things but bottom line is it's always got the same outcome the gift is and how we live life... we are the one that creates everything that we see and experience we just don't understand that we think we're victims and more helpless caught in this downward spiral but we are the downward spiral it's mental the outside world is a reflection of our inner state of being

Made me think of attack on titan too. Really makes you think. Are these stories as much a part of human nature that will write them no matter the time we are in or was their an ancient tradition or culture that permeates in echos through all of our respective cultures. Is hyborea real?

I thought about AOT as well when speaking about Giants eating humans.But based on many other animes, they love to twist the bible and add similar conceptd: Trinity, dragon, sin,...

Close, Attack on titan was both inspired from WW2 and norse mythology with Ymir being the first titan/giant and so on. All modern stories takes archetypes from the old classics.

This seems like a pretty reasonable introduction to the Book of Enoch. I had not realized that it was included in the Canon of the Ethiopian church. That is not insignificant. Also the fact that Jude refers to it matters. And it does seem to parallel various passages in the New Testament. I don't want to get carried away (although perhaps that wouldn't be so bad, since that is what God did with Enoch), but I am going to read this book.

yes, we in the ethiopian church do include it as part of our biblical canon, as does the eritrean church.
