I'd say you're partly right that the movie tries to make Gally more complex, but they dropped the ball on a couple key parts, such as the trial scene after Thomas' night in the maze, where he babbles on about some truce with the Grievers that makes no sense at all. They don't "coexist" with those things, they hide from them constantly to avoid getting murdered. Book Gally doesn't say anything that stupid.

He probably meant that while the Grievers hunt them they don't go after the gladers during the day because the gladers don't go after them during the night. Basically, both have their place in the maze but they stay out of each others ways until they actually meet up

I actually liked the puzzle from the book cause it blew my mind. Also, if anyone tried to climb the vines on the maze, the implanted chips in their brains would have given the gladers illusions that the walls looked bigger and were not making any progress. Newt even tried to commit suicide by climbing the vines :'( Also, the maze was in an underground dome. Therefore the weather and time was controlled by WICKED,but they never made it rain or snow.

I always thought the maze was one floor above the WICKED building and they had created some sort of optical illusion to make the elevator ride seem much longer than it actually was.

I liked the end book puzzle, it forced people to think outside the box and not escape until Thomas arrived. If they found out how to kill a Griever before, then they could've escaped too soon, leading Thomas and Teresa to not have to enter the maze. The movie one felt too obvious to me.

Based on Krimson's description, it seemed like the puzzles were basically the same? Like, when criticizing the book's puzzle, it seems like a lot of what he was criticizing was the process for learning the code, which is largely the same between the book and the movie. The main difference seems to be that the book had letters where the movie had numbers. *Shrug*

In the book, Gally mysteriously disappeared after an intense fight during the meeting after Thomas and Minho survive the maze. In the end, Gally appears in the chamber and shoots Chuck, this explains that W.I.C.K.E.D had taken Gally. He never tried to become a leader.

I think the best improvement the movie offered was with Teresa, which comes in 3 phases. 1) She arrives much later in the movie than in the book. In the book she arrives the day after Thomas and it's clear this was planned all along. But the movie has her show up later after Thomas' night in the maze, which introduces a mystery as to whether B was a reaction to A. 2) By introducing her later, she spends less of the movie hanging around asleep waiting to become relevant. 3) They dropped the telepathy. Totally pointless in the book so I was glad to see it gone.

"crushing hallway" scenes always bother me. They add dramatic suspense and all, but they're always shot wrong. Usually it will be shot inside the hallway and we see the character almost being crushed, but still isn't out, and then he jumps out with just enough clearance, despite we clearly having seen his odds, and escaping being literally impossible

(spoilers) The plot is actually a lot better with the sequels and prequels in mind, they explain a lot about the things that otherwise seem silly or nonsensical (Like the whole murdering children thing? That was because they used implants to study the gladers' brainwaves while they were immune but still had the Flare, just as an example)

good and enjoyable review as always in the book Gally had already been stung and remembered something about Thomas which was in part why he disliked him also there are times when he is being "controlled" . The telepathy thing from the first book point of view is used to help Thomas trust Teresa and for her to convey information (as a deus ex machina of sorts) to him before the amnesia kicks in, also it means they are passing information in the book at times when it would be geographically inconvenient ie when Thomas is in the Maze. admittedly there are a number of ways the book could have done these things but the author but aimed for a layer of complexity which couldnt have worked with the changes the film made (including the location and setup of the maze). The maze puzzle was meant to be overly complicated as part of the trial and not complete-able until Teresa arrives to trigger the end of the trial, in the film it seemed the main thing stopping the gladers succeeding in the maze was not having killed a Griever it works well in a film though as its easy to follow ( A to B to C).

Just my opinion but I would only reccomend the first book as a light read in one day. It's really short and fast-paced and would give you a decent rush of adrenaline for one evening. The ones after I didn't even bother because it's obviously just taking after the fame of the first one :P they lost the sense of curiousity, the mysterious vibe slowly became yet another Hunger games inspired series.

I love the way Alby dies in the book. He is severely traumatized by the Changing, and in the movie it seemed to me like it didn’t affect him, or barely did. His death was boring and cliche in the movie, in my opinion.

Tbh this is probably one of the most difficult book to movie adaptions for me to rank on which is better. Personally I do like the movie more simply because they did a wonderful job portraying stuff in a new light, Yea not everything is perfect (it’s been ages since I’ve read the books or watched one of the movies) but they’re both pretty great

This was SUCH a good movie. I was severely disappointed when i read the book. My main irritation was with the writing style. This is why i can't read D.H. Lawrence either. Dashner is so repetitive. It's like he fears that the reader will not understand what he "showed", so immediately after he "tells"-several times. Like: His voice boomed with fury as he yelled, "Don't do that!" He was so angry that she had done that. His anger took over him. He was furious." As a reader, I just started screaming in my head: "I GET IT! HE IS MAD! MOVE ON!"

Why did you criticize everything in the book that differed from the movie? While you were right in some areas, I think that the code in the movie was a big disappointment. The code in the book was a genius puzzle that made it much more complex and interesting, rather than being just some stupid obvious code like in the movie. In the book, it actually makes sense why it took them three years to escape.

A lot of people who only watched the movie ask why they didn't just make a ladder. In the book, it explained that there were spikes on top of the walls, and because the real escape was through the Griever hole, getting to the top of the maze wouldn't have helped anyway.

Also. Krimson says one thing he didn't like about the book was that the characters were brats. But if your family is taken away from you, your friends, your house, and you have been teleported to a maize, with no sense of purpose, while all your memories (except the name) have been wiped out, isn't it probable that you would turn into a brat out of sheer frustration?

Also. I think the reason they were provided with regular supplies, electricity etc. is because WICKED (it pisses me off that they, for some reason, made it WCKD in the movie) wanted to map the neural design of those guys. They were provided with a few comforts to check how they reacted to their predicament. I mean, some of them could (and did) just decide to stay there, cause why not. But the kids that WCKD was looking for were the ones who would fight their way out, not just sit back.

Aaaah, I've been waiting for this and am so glad you made this review! I will say, that while I hate the trilogy (having gotten so angry that I refuse to read the other two prequel books) over all I do still enjoy the first book. I agree that it is definitely better for younger audiences though. Also, interesting side note, I called Alby's death as soon as he was introduced. Black, angry, and in charge? His name might as well have been R.I.P. Also agree with Gally (and mostly everyone) being better portrayed in the movie as opposed to the book. I think the movies, as they go on, will have a mich harder time with fitting things together and making sense since there is such a big departure from the book (like the maze being outside) which could lead to even more questions but this movie was still enjoyable on its own. Can't wait to see your review of the second book/movie and wonder if you'll have similar feelings to mine.

I remember now why I never finished this series. Reading the first book showed me just how claustrophobic I am (also grievers despite poor design were freaking terrorfying), and by the end of it I couldn't bring myself to start the next book. Maybe I'll give it another try.

As you say, Gally's actions were much more understandable in the movie than in the book. I also watched the movie before reading the novel and thus found it confusing when Gally suddenly appeared out of nowhere in the end. However, the book provides an explanation in that Gally was brought through the Maze by WICKED (or WCKD), which also made him kill Chuck. Like you, I found the grievers much scarier in the movie than in the book.

Your review is making me actually consider watching the movie because of how good it sounds. I thought it was going to be another just-okay dystopian. Apparently not? I read the book and watched the movie. I prefer the movie, though not perfect, because it kept most of the good elements from the book and improved or left out most of the weaker material (which there was quite a bit of). A lot of the movie flaws are carryover from the material it adapted.

I agree. This is one of those adaptations that I prefer more than the book. Not that the book was bad or anything, but the movie was a tad more exciting. Also (just know this is just a gripe _I_ have), while James Dashner is a decent author, he either seems to have a hard time describing certain elements in his writing or what he describes feels underwhelming. Like, when he describes the Grievers and those creatures at the end of the _Scorch Trials_ book, I'm legitimately having trouble visualizing from what's being written. I'm like "Wait a minute... _what?"_

I really hope to see live action adaptations of Charlie Higson's the enemy series. I love those books. Plus the possibilities are incredible for a series of movies or even a tv show based off of it.

They were trying to make a cure, when better quarantine options would've been a more viable solution, and cost less. This makes EVEN LESS SENSE in the movies because you find out 1: helicopters still exist. 2: the maze was on the surface the whole time. and 3: There are people fighting back against the wicked witches (with a B). at least the book jumped over that massive plot hole the size of Georgia.... don't worry, they created even bigger plot holes latter, but at least they avoided this one.

It's been years since I read the books, and this video is several years old obviously, but I just watched all 3 movies and I have this at least to say: The telepathy between Taresa and Thomas was important because it gave a concrete reason as to why they were so important to each other. In the movies, they're only connected because they have memories of being coworkers. But in the books, they were linked intrinsically which made the betrayal later on more biting and such.

The franchise had such promise. But if you set up interesting questions, then authors need to be prepared to give satisfying answers. Not just make us care then tell us "that wasn't what was really important; this next level is what's more important" and onward to "none of it matters because i just want to create chaos in this very interesting world with characters who never finish a meaningful arc." The maze that started off as a reader's puzzle became quicksand that readers could never hope to surface from unless the author threw us a rope once in a while.

The biggest plothole and the thing that I hated about the movie the most, was how Gally fucking returns after having a spear thrown into his heart. In the Book, Thomas just punches the shit out of him and leaves him unconscious, it makes sense that he isn’t dead, but a god damn spear right in the chest is something else.

I had read all of the Maze Runner books before the first movie came out. I remember liking the first movie, but the Scorch Trials movie pissed me off so much that I've never seen the rest of them (actually I don't even know if they made another movie after that) I'm not a huge fan of the series anymore, but nowadays my favorite series from this author is the Mortality Doctrine. I don't think it has any movies but if you do just book reviews it'd be cool if you looked into it.
