Some things I was really mad they cut out were the tattoos, the new deathly threats and the "Rose took my nose" scene. The tattoos were very important to me because they gave the characters elements of confusion as to the labels they were given (though sometimes it did feel like they were directly telling us the attributes of the characters) and they added this idea of "wicked can do basically anything". The monsters like the liquid metal balls and the bulb lights things at the end contributed to this sense of "we can control your lives as we please" while keeping it a mistery as to why they were putting these kids through literal hell. The "Rose took my nose" scene made Cranks look really creepy outside of "uuuuh they're zombies", because they still retained human semblances and manners of speech even though they were almost completely gone, which also adds a sort of sadness because of their condition. This sadness plays a big role later in the books, when we see how Cranks are treated, so making them seem like random zombies just destroyed the sense of humanity behind their wracked brain

I liked the second and third books. I watched the first movie before I'd even started reading them. Once I started, I passed the first book quickly (I'd essentially seen it already) and when I hit the second and third, I was HYPED to see the second book come to life on the big screen. So, I felt kicked, stabbed, and talked down to in the movie as they basically said "What third book?" and created their own content. Seriously. They ruined anything relevant to the third book with the second movie. For almost the entire movie, the characters are in a completely different story... and I could tell. I tried to ignore that, but it was plagued with plot holes and inconsistencies that my friend and I spent the entire movie laughing out loud in the theater. (Even during the supposedly serious scenes.) They get ridiculous on such a massive level that I am really looking forward to watching you review it. It was one camera nod away from being a parody of itself. I thought I was probably not being fair to the movie, but... I just couldn't take anything seriously.

I hated the third book but I see what you’re saying though. It was a really loose adaptation. They kept the same story beats, but a lot was changed though, and I think that’s actually a good thing. I hated the ending, how they just like went through a portal to a magical happy fun land in the last two pages and everything was all fine and dandy. It was kinda stupid. The way the movie did it was way better IMO. I do think the second book was way better than the movie though.

Unpopular Opinion Here: I was actually happy with the slight changes on Teresa's betrayal, as well as having her involved in Scorch Trials rather than being completely separated from the Gladers for a 2nd time. As she was meant to be a love interest for Thomas, I didn't like the fact she was in a coma in the first (book, not movie) since they were meant to connect. Because of that, the Scorch Trials didn't quite hit that note for me due to the lack of chemistry that wasn't built up previously, making little sense with their relationship. The movie adaptation still sucks for being cliché, but at least there were reasons for some of the changes made, considering the convolution that was in the book. Those were my feelings, anyway, from reading all three. You'll know when you read Death Cure.

One of the best parts of the books was that W.I.C.K.E.D. actually was good. It gets revealed that Thomas designed everything himself so he'd think and undergo stress in a very specific way to get the exact brain chemistry needed to create a cure. W.I.C.K.E.D was literally following his orders and when he couldn't go through with it; the let him go. That at least kinda makes sense a little. The movies give us BaddyMcBadguys who bla-bla-bla and kill people for a cure... or something? One guy just likes torturing kids. But we're the good guys-I swear!! Oh, and the cure is just Thomas' blood. Like what the hell? Just his blood? Okaaaaaaay. Then what's the point of all the psychological games if not to create compatible brain anagrams?

I’m so late but unpopular opinion: Teresa’s betrayal is done better in the films. In the books, she is forced to and apologises a lot after the act is over and still never gets forgiven. A great character with a lot of potential just ruined for no reason. In the films, however, Teresa chooses to betray the Gladers because she believes in what WICKED is doing and believes in the greater good. It gives us a love/hate character, some character development for Teresa, and a love interest for the protagonist that isn’t just copy and pasted (unlike Brenda, who is always on the same side as Thomas). If Dashner was going to make her betray Thomas, he could have made her have character development and her own opinions. Instead, her character was simply ruined until her 2 paragraph death.

Okay. The Scorch Trials will always be my guilty pleasure of the three, not that it's remotely close to being a bad movie. I love it, it's new, its the best "Zombie Movie" I ever will see. The thing that I think you skimped out on was the creativity, right at the beginning scene having the camera move in and out of focus is a great way of doing a flashback/dream sequence, the slow burn time at the mall gives us- The audience a glimpse inside what the world was like and how to people lived, and did I mention the use of natural lighting during that whole act? Then to Cranks, the Cranks in these movies are fresh and interesting, the makeups are well-done and the prosthetic vine-ish growths make them more decipherable than average Zombie creatures, plus the definition of Zombie is quote; (in popular fiction) a person or reanimated corpse that has been turned into a creature capable of movement but not of rational thought, which feeds on human flesh. (Wow switching fonts) But it seems as if this definition is more flexible, though Cranks do get more elaboration in the third film. I hope I provided valid points to my argument... PROBABLY OVER ANALYZED IT THOUGH Anyone who worked on sound design deserves freakin' Oscars- Multiple Oscars.

Honestly I enjoyed the movie well enough as a book fan. This review was great, just one thing-could you talk about the characters more? Like the changes to their personalities, relevance, and relationships to one another. Thomas' relationship with Newt and Theresa was stronger in the books, shown by how they were the only one to call him by a nickname, Tommy and Tom respectively. This adds to the drama and emotion in The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure. Speaking of the Death Cure. Beware the ending to the book, it was nonsense, I did prefer the movie version simply because I could follow it more, but I can kinda understand why Thomas does what he does in the book. The first 2/3 of the book is full of amazing writing and is much better in the book. Especially "the scene". You'll know what I'm talking about when you read it.

Can we touch on how many graphic scenes the movies removed? Is it just par for the course to make YA book adaptations safe for babies? Is it just to hold on to the PG-13 rating? I liked the first book, and the movie was better. Now here's possible spoilers and personal opinion so... The second book to me was a nockofff of the first. The twists and turns that made the first book work, even if not perfectly, are tried again in the first half of the book. Done poorly and confusingly, this sequel was kinda ruined from the beginning for me. I didn't mind the second half, which is mostly Thomas and "his crank girlfriend" traveling through the scorch. But I didn't watch the movie, or the last for that matter. After reading the sequel and third I was just fine leaving the series where it stood, ended. Sorry, not my favorite series.

@6:50 Ok but watching this in 2021 after a ton of people said “screw you I do what I want” in response to the worlds’ governments trying to institute quarantine protocols - well, let’s just say this statement hits a little different 😂😂😂

I'd love London to do it too, but in the mean time you can check out The Dom's Review he also does adaptations, and I really wish they'd do a colab

I prefer the 2nd and 3rd book over their respective movie adaptations. This movie was all over the place and some of adaptation choices had to hurt its continuity going forward. The Scorch trials book did a good job setting things up for the grand finale while being a really entertaining read by itself. The film was disappointing and I haven't bothered seeing the 3rd. I love how the book handled The Flare by making it a neuro-degenerative disease that produced an extreme form of schizophrenia. I could see the urgency of finding a cure. Making 95% of the planet pre-disposed also made the mazes a bit more sensical. If everyone is going to be sick once they leave the maze anyway, then it comes off a cruel last ditch effort to make the best of things rather than an overreaction with child murder. From what I remember some kids were intentionally infected and others weren't. They wanted to see how the disease worked and weed out those with immunity to make a vaccine or something. I hate that the movies turned it into a zombie pandemic. It was really difficult to read about the characters slowly losing their minds and beg for death as their last shreds of sanity left them. I had to walk away from the books for a while after Newt's death. He was my favorite character, so I was devastated by how unceremonious it all was. Teresa's betrayal broke me in the book. It wasn't bad in the film, but it didn't carry the same emotional weight. I loved the sewer chase scene in the book. It was so creepy and I was terrified they would be caught the whole time. The really far gone man made my skin crawl. It was a great way to show how awful The Flare was and build tension around the infected kids. I can honestly see how living like that would be a far worse fate than death.

It's been a while since I last saw the movie in theaters when it came out, but I remember a big problem I had was what they did to the infected people. In the books, they were actual people. They had lost their minds yes, but they could talk and think critically. In the movie, they dumbed them down to be basically zombies. I found that extremely lazy and much less interesting. That's all I got right now since it's been so long, but I used to be a big fan of the books & I remember this movie pissing me off royally.

WICKED is good was all made for mapping the killzone. It's contracidting and confusing on purpose. Also turns out to be true in the books. No matter how much you hate to admit it, and how twisted it is, WICKED is in the end actually good.

i thought the 2nd book was my fave because it was so different from the movie so it was unpredictable and just very thrilling overall for a book. however i really didnt like the movie

I tried to get it for the credits sequence too, but lo and behold, copyright happened. My second choice would have been the Nightmare City music ("The Nightmare Becomes Reality....") but Krimson had already uploaded his own version by then.

Fun fact this was the first movie of this series that i saw and it was so damn confusing to someone who had never seen the first movie or read the books XD after watching the first review I realized this and started getting sad because i remembered that one kid dying and the creepy zombie people

Honestly, I've read through up to the second book and this movie, although there are some connections here and there, is nothing like the book. As the saying goes, the book is always better.

So wait, the first maze was all men and one woman, yet the other maze mentioned here was the polar opposite. Who the fuck are these people making these big-ass, elaborate mazes meant to house people for their weird-ass experiments? Vault-Tec?

What is it with those movies and shows seemingly using half the cast of game of Thrones? I mean this one had Littlefinger, Jojen and Misandei and that's just the ones I realized, might even be more of them.
