I learned recently that the newer Kindle paperwhites have a dislexia setting, I hope you're able to enjoy books again!

Lifelong reader here, your mom"s age or so. I would be so excited if someone told me they are new to reading! I would never shut up with recommendations. That person was so rude and not nearly as intellectual as they think they are. I'm so interested to see where your newfound interest takes you. I've been enjoying books by Jackie Morris. They are poetry and art books and I find them just delightful. I love it to see the art incorporated, and the books are good to give as gifts too. The children's books are exquisite. Nice for a break from all text reading. Keep going with it. You'll find a selection of authors that are more sophisticated in their writing, including and featuring POC and or descriptions that leave enough to the imagination that people can decide how the character looks for themselves. I think even in this modern age, you have to make the effort to find black and BIPOC authors and work them into your reading. It's important.

Audiobooks so opened the world of reading to me because of my ADHD! With the audio I got pulled into another world while at the same time can be so productive. Her brain probably focuses in on one thing so she probably cannot fathom a person saying they only just got into reading. If anything its a cool learning moment for her cause you took a moment to explain how in you how your ADHD works. In the past I've gone to Etsy looking for artist's who have made book merch and its been pretty spot on cause the artists will have read the work to give good detail but I'll have to go look up Xaden tonight. I got a friend a Violence t-shirt from etsy as a gift now I'm curious.

Thanks for this rant! I had heard of this problem but I'm not in bookish online communities so I had no idea it was so bad. "Why is your ideal person white only?" GO OFF

I'm so glad you are talking about this. That is so racist and I think white petiole don't realize that it is. You go girl. Also that really sucks that that lady was so rude. I hope she learnt her lesson.

I have a granddaughter that posts on Good Reads reviews of different books. This would probably be of interest to her. She is a teen still and an avid reader. I hope that she would agree with you. I certainly do, and I am an old lady. I am always hopeing that the younger generations will be more accepting of diversity. Good for you Ashley for posting this.

That person who asked what you like to read was really rude. Literacy is NOT something everyone even has never mind the budget to buy books, add in learning issues like you described and there are plenty of reasons ppl "hate reading" or don't read... When my son was born a friend was a freakin NURSE and she was illiterate. Like you, she had dyslexia and ADHD. She was one of the kids who slipped through at school with 50% grades. She could read some words but very basic, I think she had tested at a grade 3 or 4 reading level. She had a son and he was 3, she struggled to read him books but she went back to school to learn to read BC she wanted to teach him and not feel "dumb". You would never know by talking to her that she didn't know how to read as she had a large vocabulary and used it correctly. Perhaps you can do a bit of a deep dive into literacy in developed countries and educate these type of ppl who scoff at others... I'm proud of you for reading books! I know you read all the time for research etc but books are so different! Check out your library esp with baby Kai as they usually have free baby and kids programs and tons of books and even coffee, it's a great way to get out of the house with Kai, meet other parents and to get fresh books to read to him and for yourself!

Hey Ashley! Reading has always been so hard for me. I started listening to audiobooks about two years ago. I got a kindle a couple months ago. There is a dyslexia font that has helped me so much! Books are hard for me because I focus so much on the size. With the kindle, the book is always the same size. Probably a weird mind game I play on myself…

I’m so sorry that lady treated you like that! Like other people have said I’m sure a library would be great. Also I almost solely listen to audiobooks and I love them so much! I can sit and crochet or work or whatever while I listen and the only downside I think is when you don’t like the narrator but you learn who you like a don’t like along the way!

As someone with undiagnosed (at the time) ADHD who grew up reading as an escape/hyperfocus, WELCOME!!!! I think people who grew up reading tended to be made fun of for it, so maybe that makes sense why some people are defensive when other people say they've never been into reading... but that definitely does not excuse the audacity of someone to be so rude about it!

(further along in the video) I didn't realize so many people were being weird about race in the Hunger Games wth. I remember them being clearly described as having dark skin in the book?! This is so new to me 😅 Edit to add: they even did it to Jesus 😭

I’m literally 37 and decided as a child that books are bullshit because the world is burning and I’d rather enjoy other things with my time. So I’d be new to reading too. 😮😂

I get where youre coming from, but this is NOT how to get into reading. Dont start by browsing communities for the "hot" books or booktok stuff. Theres always weird thirsty stuff going on out there, and worrying about kids on the internet fangirling over their fandoms isnt worth the stress. The best part of reading is the worlds and stories and characters, not the online discourse! Def recommend finding a local reading group to join and make friends, then branching out from there! People's delusions online...they dont change what's written the book 😂
