I neglected to add that The Zohar is repeatedly referenced across this novel. That may be a bonus to the feast of facts and fiction, depending on one’s taste. It is not necessary to be familiar with 18th century history and religious movements to enjoy The Books of Jacob, but periodically looking up references may make it a more immersive reading experience.

Thank you for the review. I, too, loved the BoJ, and am midway through my second read. The book deserves a second read. I dove right into the BoJ without taking on Tokarczuk’s earlier work and am not sorry I did. Yes, it’s a tome and sometimes a tough read. But the rich history, glorious poetry, and fascinating minutia of peasant/church/Talmudic/immigrant/messianic life was well worth it. This book deserves its own book club; so much to talk about. The women characters are deftly drawn; especially poignant and meaningful given the short shrift women usually receive. I could go on and on…but to put it simply: read this book!

I loved the details too, Nancy, and you’re very accurate about how carefully the women were portrayed and thought through, even from the beginning of the long journey that this book is. I’m so happy others appreciated it too! I hope you have a great weekend. Cheers, Jack
