I didn't expect anything written by Niven or even Hugo award quality, but I did expect the author to at least know what a Dyson sphere is. It's not just a big sphere in space, it's millions of miles in diameter.... Not some office building size, containment system or something that people can just run through.
@jamesrogers1554
@jamesrogers1554 8 күн бұрын
Right? I got to the part where they said, “We have to find what is powering this place,” and I stopped listening. The author has no idea what a Dyson Sphere even is. The entire point of one is that it draws energy from the star it is constructed around. 🤦‍♂️

Did the protagonists seriously were looking for a power source of a dyson sphere? That would be the star.... Not to mention that even a tiny section of such object would be like a billion planets in area.. Did they go to the core of dyson sphere? Thets a bit of a hike...like a few AU... and again, you'll find a star, lol... I feel author didnt qite do the scale of the object justice...

This is the plot of a Star Trek TNG episode. People would live on the interior surface of the sphere. It would be billions of times the surface area of a planet, so "exploring" it would be a slow process.

@@dinosaur6756 We were discussing that. Can you imagine if it's standard Earth orbit distance of 93,000,000 miles plugged into this A=4πr2? Imagine the interior area. Even in Larry Niven RINGWORLD, the living area was unreal!

Nice story. But exploring a Dyson Sphere would be a HUGE task requiring Hundreds of people, if not Thousands or even Millions. Exploring a Dyson Sphere would also require craft capable of traveling within it at very high speed, to cover enough of a search area. Because a Dyson Sphere would have the habitable surface area THOUSANDS of times that of EARTH. Imagine trying to find a Central Control Room in all of London, or New York, or Tokyo. Now multiple that by 10,000!

Whelp, I suppose I shouldn't have expected life-changing greatness from something that could be read in barely over half an hour... it's not great but it's not bad either. The Argo Squirrel Network really has spoiled me rotten. Pros: The core idea of a genuine Dyson Sphere being completely abandoned is an absolutely awesome idea and one you could do a lot with. Cons: Like literally everyone else has said, the title is misleading as what the characters explored was not a true Dyson Sphere. A true Dyson Sphere is impossibly huge, one with an Earth-like interior would have multiple oceans each bigger then our entire PLANET. It would have taken the four protagonists WEEKS to get anywhere on foot and the odds of finding anything specific by anything other then completely random chance would be impossible. The vast emptiness would have made for interesting cosmic or psychological horror, the characters struggling to grasp the sheer volume of the empty space they were exploring and they would constantly be wondering if the flickers of movement at the edge of their vision were a hallucination or not. It would be like the Backrooms except no suspension of disbelief or unexplained magical teleportation nonsense required. Instead, you made it a bland haunted space station held together by generic non-euclidean geometry and explored by four protagonists that barely had any personality beyond basic cliches. Dr. Warren, the glory-seeking scientist that cannot fully exist in reality because his egomania would make him an insufferable liability at best and anathema to the very nature of a scientist at worst, is the only one with any real personality. Ultimately, I'll listen to one or two more of your stories to see if this is a fluke but for this one it's "thanks for the idea if nothing else."

A Dyson sphere is not solid, it’s hollow, with a Sun at its center. The inner surface of the sphere would be like the surface of a planet, smack in the middle of the Goldilocks zone for the output of the Sun.

Dyson sphere say with a radius equal to Jupiter average distance from Sun will be a trillion x trillion the surface area of Earth and probably I am underestimating . Mathematically it’s easy to calculate. All 8B humans exploring this dyson barefoot or even in the fastest plane ever built will take a few billion years to cover just a small part of it.

@@omlem8641 I'm not just saying this, because he's a friend, but the honest truth is all of his stories would make incredible sci-fi movies! They would also make for an awesome streaming series like the Twilight Zone or Outter Limits. Where each episode is a different sci-fi show based on each story. I would definitely pay for either or both. The content of these stories is unbelievably realistic, you can actually feel the emotions of the characters & sense of the environment as if you were there. The other Sci-fi themed channels on KZbin are great in their own way, but no one compares in content to this channel. Just my opinion, which means absolutely nothing.
