The Boondocks Season 4 Episode 10 Review:The New Black(Final Episode)

Season 1: a great start to what would eventually be a revered comedy series season 2: In my opinion, an improvement over season 1. Season 1's animation was pretty weak in areas and the show was slow at times, but Season 2 remedied that problem by finding what i thought was a good balance between the over-the-top comedic moments and the poignant social commentary. Plus with the assistance of Madhouse animating certain scenes and a better animation budget, Season 2 of Boondocks was a great season Season 3: It's not many times that the third part of anything ends up being better than the first two, but in this case, Season 3 in my eyes was the best Season of the bunch, mostly because it was the most well-paced of the three season in terms of writing and story-structure. Every ep felt sharp, witty, and to the point; the eps barely dragged and before i knew it, the season was over. Season 4: obviously without a doubt, the weakest of the four seasons, but i dont think it was trash...by comparison to the other seasons yes one could argue season 4 was trash, but on its own i thought it was just.....decent. Something went terribly wrong during production...that's the only answer. I remember back in early 2012, adult swim said they got to see the scripts of about 8 of the eps of the fourth season and thought they were absolutely amazing. Something had to have happened because we didnt see 8 great eps..we only got about 3 or 4 at the most. Gone from this season is the witty comedy we've all come to love and a forced attempt to get laughs by making certain characters force their archetypal characteristics a little too much without the intelligence that made them funny in the first place. Sigh, what sucks is that this is how it all ends for boondocks.

This was the best episode of the entire season, hands down. You could tell Aaron didn't write it, but it was still so good. I totally wouldn't have minded if all the other eps had been like this. So sad that it's over.

It is VERY clear McGruder wasn't writing the story. It is also sad that this is most likely the last season. 1) ONLY 10 EPISODES FOR THE WHOLE SEASON? 2) Lack of characters such as: Gangstalicious, those 2 robbers (forgot their names), Thugnificent and his whole crew, A Pimp Named Slickback and Jasmine DuBois. (Yes, even her). 3) Huey gets little to no attention despite being the protagonist. Grandad basically got the whole season Episodes that Huey played little to no real role in: 1,4,5,6,8,9,10. 4) Most of these episodes do not have the satire stories that McGruder intended for.

Weighing in late on this one. Objectively speaking, this was some clever and hilarious writing; I love how it dealt with the unfortunate cultural trend of jumping to conclusions, and condemning people en masse without knowing all the facts, which is tantamount to bullying in itself, something I find ironic. Also individuals and organizations' piggybacking on incidents and exploiting them for attention. The lines were sharp though, with my favourite being Rolo Goodlove's gibe "Imma take your word on how dick move Sweetlove" LOL - classic shit. It has all the hallmarks of a McGruder episode; feels like he'd written it, but wanted to be uncredited because he disagreed with the season as a whole. Anyway, great channel yo, I subbed, keep it up.

I honestly didn't know that this was the last episode till today ( I thought they were still gonna make 20 ) :-( . I thought that the episode was good, but like you said, it lacked a proper farewell. Season 4 overall was a bit of a disappointment, especially since I loved the first 3 seasons. However, it still had some funny episodes too. I think it's best to probably treat season 4 as 'The Boondocks GT'

Fully agree again you guys. This episode had me at the edge of my seat to see how it would end and it was hilarious! But it was pretty sad to see it just..go like that though. I mean that's it? That's the Boondocks? The trailers were all about them trying to get money back and then get back at Ed II but all of that was forgotten. All in all, it was my favorite episode of the season. Real sad though, I got into the Boondocks within those few years between seasons 3-4 so after watching reruns of every episode like 1,000 times lol I was dying for the 4th season and I got...that... Oh well. Like y'all said, it's just a show, but still, I'm gonna miss The Boondocks and them niggas from Woodcrest. Nice reviews btw, very true.

Glad i didn't went for the ride with this finale to the series. Wheeewwww, makes it a lot more easier for me to realized that the boondocks was "done" when Aaron was not involve to bring it back. We all know reasons why other celebs didn't participated in this seasons series. He'll even the voice acting i remember for the protagonists didn't vibe like it used too. i was watching the seasons(up to the third), its included commentary and special features and... It didn't feel nostalgic as viewing the other episodes like before. They must of let off the original members and was gabby the actress of Jazmine still? or did she also decided to leave. Think about it, Aaron himself didn't even hire or pay those celebrities, it was just voluntary and fun. Proof for the skeptical speculators? Ceelo came back like twice or three times for the show! lil wayne, danna ceesor (how it was spell) Kat williams, Tanya something(actress,mother of chris~ Everybody h8s chris), Terry cruise and so on. Those guys either fired Aaron and the team(most), and the guest stars probably didn't appreciated it so they sorta must have boycotted it in-distinctively. Oh well. gr8 review, this season deserves a 3.4 in my book.

Even though the fourth season was nothing compared to 1, 2, and 3, I'm still glad there was a last season. Y'all are right about this season only having a few good episodes and those few made it worth to watch everything else in the season. Sure it would be nice for Huey and Riley to develop more as people but I guess that's what's great about cartoon strips and this series. Huey, Riley, and Grandad will always be awesome and eternal .

Word on the playground is that according to Comic Central City a source close to Adult Swim has said that if the show continues to get high ratings, then a fifth season of The Boondocks would happen. But if that happens they need to get Aaron McGruder back on board no ifs, ands, or buts if they want to get longevity out of this show. But with McGruder working on Black Jesus and considering how wishy-washy Season 4 was I don't know if this will come to pass.

Ok so, when it came to the first three seasons, after my initial excitement because it was such a novelty for the time, I couldn't stand it, especially because I liked the original comic strip. And it wasn't because it couldn't make me laugh, but I felt that it completely missed on the social commentary, for a show that claimed to be purposed on it - there was more attention to the cheap laughs than to the exploring of the morals... As for this season, yeah, obviously without the creator, it was going to suffer, and I felt actually, that they reacted almost too strongly to the problems of before and almost completely removed all subtlety... But you know what, and I was pleasantly surprised by the reaction of people like you, who originally liked the show, being so similar to mine. To me, this was by far the best episode of the series, especially at a point where we least expected it. It had just about everything, from the fourth wall, to the extensive character development on a normally cliche caricature like Riley, it had just the right mix of what I previously mentioned - finally an episode with a well executed purpose... On a final note, Idk how much I'll be dedicated to McGruder's new show, because he pretty much lost me a while ago to be honest, and I figure it's easier to completely ignore it at an earlier stage than finding out how much it's letting me down later, before it's finished... But how famous was the writer for this last episode though? Because I would rather be a fan of him.

To be honest, I thought series finale was going to be based on the the ending of the comic. (Because me personally, I think The Boondocks comic stripe is a bit better than the animated series) but I DO love this episode to death, just wished it had a proper ending like the comic strip. (The comic strip story is from March 21st, 2006 to March 26th, 2006) To me, that would've brought a wonderful ending to the series. you can look at it on the GoComics website.

I thought it was okay I don't know maybe whenever I get the chance to re-watch the last episode I might have a clearer opinion on it but for now I just think it was alright and I don't get why nothing got wrapped up by the end like you said. If anything I feel like the last week's stinkmeanor episode could've been better as the finale. Again I'll re-watch it later on without the thought that it is the final episode to see how it stands on its own. Anyway if you watch a good number of anime you are used to seeing a few that have some questionable endings am I right lol? I would have to agree to whoever said it below the comments but yeah it does feel like the DBGT of the series and makes sense considering McGruder's leaving. I like season 4 a little bit overall but when I got the chance to re-watch season 1 again (it's been so long for me) I already find season 4 to be the weakest with some episodes matching the quality of season 1 and like 1 or 2 episodes feeling like season 2.

I tend to agree with the negative reviews. The way they made Sweetlove's main joke about molesting Riley, and milked Tiny Lister's disability for jokes just seemed pointlessly mean. But from what I read, a lot of viewers aren't bothered by it and think Riley got what was coming to him at the end. Maybe it did some good.

Another thing the last episode could have wrapped things up if the writers would have made Riley or Huey have something bad happen to them at the end when they Riley was being chased by all the kids

I get the whole feel of the new boondocks without Aaron but Looking back how season 1 dramatically changed on 2 and on 3. Season 4 with the whole financial problems couldnt been better. Huey didnt seem to talk as much as he used to back in season 1 ,2 or 3 like in saying something deep. Kinda did in freedom land but thats as good as it gets,No fighting scenes like in season 2 or 3 like Huey and Ruckus. Or Riley and Huey.. I kinda lost its touch but i mean thats just me. Thank you this train wreck of a season is finally over. Between the unnecessary focus on grandad, the constant barrage of uncle ruckus, lack of lovable side characters (thugnificent, jasmine, etc), not understanding what makes a good narrative arc, lack of character depth for Huey, Riley, and Grandad, as well as good ideas ruined by bad writing season 3 should have ended the show. I mean comparing the plight of gay people to black people is a great idea but leave it to the writers to waste it away. Just like Freedomland and Breaking Grandad good ideas lack of or just crappy execution. I hope Black Jesus carries the spirit of The Boondocks with it.

I don't understand why they would start a story arc that they had no intention of finishing. Especially when the majority of the episodes of the season revolve around it. It's not like it really mattered, though. I don't consider this season to really be the boondocks. Aside from 3-4 episodes, it was mediocre to awful. I wish they just let the show die and not brought it back just for this. It's sad that the season was bad, but at least the final episode was good and had the spirit of the MacGruder era. We'll always have the first three seasons.

Honestly, I didn't like the episode. At all. I thought the whole season was rather mediocre as is, especially compared to how amazing the first three seasons were (keep in mind that this is one of my favorite cartoons of all time, so I had high expectations for the final season), but I at least thought they'd step it up a BIT more for the series finale. I probably should have known better, but I still can't begin to express my disappointment. The overarching plot introduced early in the season was pretty much just left on standby for whatever reason and no changes were made to the status quo. Which really doesn't make any sense, since this is the FINAL EPISODE and considering all the interesting elements they introduced, including the plot, I would've loved a proper wrap-up, but I guess that was just asking for too much. Either way, you simply don't introduce a major story, decide to not bother with an ending, and just expect viewers to forget about it at the end of it all, but the writers just didn't seem to get that. Beyond that, the episode's plot by itself was... alright, would've been perfectly fine as a standalone episode, really, but not as a season finale, much less, again, a SERIES finale. The jokes in general at least got a few smirks out of me, which I can't say for the rest of the season, where I mostly just got a huge "meh" feeling from watching. It just ending abruptly with Riley being chased by the special needs people was probably the worst part, all things considered, though, and what little enjoyment I got out of the episode was quickly crushed as a result of that. At least I'm glad they brought Goodlove back; he had some of the funniest lines in the episode, which was SOME degree of consolation. I can't say much else without going into a gigantic tangent on the series as a whole, though, and what I'm saying is already largely that, probably. I'll just say that while this final episode overall wasn't an ABOMINATION, I still thought it could've been done better. A HELL of a lot better.

Season 4 is nothing but a huge lesson why you shouldn't become a huge sellout like Aaron McGruder. He owned the comic strip, he owned what was once one of the greatest shows on TV, and he threw it all in the trash so he could make some religious blaxploitation junk with the help of the almighty dollar. Every episode felt less like The Boondocks, and more like The Robert Freeman Program. Oh well, rest in peace, Boondocks!

I didn't say he sold the series to some other guy, by saying the word, " sellout", I meant he left the show soon enough so he could work on a new show and have even more cash to lay on top of at night. And he sure as hell cared for his "baby" enough to wait 4 years to mention his departure when he could've explained himself long ago when they were still in production. He left with some bullshit excuse and had his boyfriend, Michael B Jordan explain the whole situation for everybody. And odds are, Black Jesus will end up being a total flop just like season 4. As long as Aaron has some lime in his wallet, he won't really care if your pleased or not.

Chris Recinos He. Didn't. Leave. The. Show. He was FIRED. FORCIBLY REMOVED. We don't know when he was fired, but it sure as hell wasn't right after season 3 broke ratings records for Adult Swim. Also, if Aaron cared about money so much, why did he work on season 4 for years before being fired by Sony, instead of just shitting out a poor season? Why did he make a comic strip for years about how the greed in America was destroying the Country? Reading your comment, its obvious you have some sort of bias towards Michael and Aaron, but if you would get off your bias steamroller for a minute, you would see that Aaron didn't want to give up the show, and that he was fired by Sony.

I had clearly stated that Michael had explained the whole situation. The words were right there...... in front of your screen. And before you judge me for making an actual valid arguement, let's talk about yourself. One part of your previous comment, you say we don't know when he was fired, and then the next part you jump the gun and say he was working on season 4 for years before Sony fired him. Goddamn man! Even you can't understand your own arguement. Once you've been fired from production, it's just like how you said it in those ignorant and silly caps of yours, YOU'RE FIRED. It's not like Adult Swim just called McGruder and screamed, " Aaron, MY BOY!! Listen don't pay attention to Sony, we'll let you work on every single episode even though you're not aloud." And no, I highly doubt he was a sellout at the time he was just a comic strip producer, he probably didn't make enough money at the time to begin with. And I always thought good of the guy until he just let other people walk on his legacy, he could've just told them to cancel it. They way season 4 ended just showed he didn't have the balls to stand up and protect what he had created 2 decades ago when he was in college.

Chris Recinos Sorry, re-reading your comment I saw that I misunderstood your comment about Michael B. However, I still stand by the rest of my argument. We don't know the exact time/date when Aaron was fired, but we DO know he was working on season 4. We know this because he stated that season 4 was going to be 20 episodes long, and he had even described what some of these episodes were going to be about. For example: he said that one episode was going to be about Huey finding love, and that one episode was going to have a cameo by Lil Wayne. Again though, I should've worded myself better. Sorry. Also, why would you think Aaron wasn't making money off of his comics? They were published in newspapers across the United States, and on top of that it was a pretty popular comic strip. It was popular enough to get a TV show made out of it, a show that became a smash hit that made Adult Swim, and in turn, Aaron, lots of money. Again, Aaron was fired. How could he have made the call to cancel it? He may have quite a bit of weight to throw around at Adult Swim, but I highly doubt he has enough power to cancel a entire show, especially one as popular as the Boondocks. (The season 4 premiere brought in almost 3 million viewers, and season 3 regularly broke 1 million viewers)

Man this season sucked really bad. None of the episode were not funny. My favorite episode in the whole damn season was "Breaking Granddad." "Early bird special." "FreedomLand" and of course "Stinkmeaner the clone war." Only four favorites in season 4. by all season 4 sucked. I mean wheres Ed and Rome, Thugnificent, A pimp named Slickback. Where the F**K are these characters at??? i just wish arron would have stayed working on the show a little longer. Maybe his new show will be funnier.
