The Border Dispute Revealed | Abandoned Stone Houses in Alaska | Destination Adventure

This story has been in the back of my mind for a year now, and I am so excited to share it with you all. Last year I explored a location that was supposed to contain remains from when Russia occupied Alaska. The location was fantastic, and the audience was amazed, but one viewer was not convinced. I received an email stating that the location could have been from the Canada Alaska border dispute, from the late 1800's. This was the first I had ever hear of this story, and after doing some deep digging, I believed the gentleman may be correct. This is a part of history between Canada and USA that is not taught, and rarely even discussed, so proving which story was correct would be a challenge.
The ruins I had filmed were from one of four apparent storehouses built in the 1890's by the army corp of engineers, so I thought a comparison to another of the structures would prove which story is correct. Finding this structure was a bit more challenging than the previous, but upon arrival it was obvious that the other gentleman was correct. The two structures are incredibly similar, with only one exception, the stone gable. I also stopped and filmed the one in Hyder Alaska, which is the only of the four that has been restored. At this point, I have been able to film storehouse 1, 3 and 4, so I think a visit to storehouse 2 will be necessary in the near future.

The only thing missing, was a slice of lime... Super-cool vid. Nice job trekking down that store-house. When you get to Rupert, go to Gary's Lock Shop at 617 2nd ave w. Get yourself some proper spare keys cut. Bring your camera. His store is like a museum. Then see if you can get out to Oona river on Porcher Island. That's an adventure. Nice job. Glad you got to eat. Safe travels... Cheers

In 1896, Captain David du Bose Gaillard of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers received orders to build four masonry 'storehouses' along Portland Canal. Later on, Lieutenant Colonel David du Bose Gaillard later went on to complete the notoriously difficult Culebra Cut through the central backbone of the isthmus of Panama during the Panama Canal Construction. Crazy neat adventure find.

Love your videos from a flatlander in Manitoba. Very inspiring. Now looking for a truck camper to fix up and do some exploring in my first love northern Manitoba where grew up. To get a perspective geographically of where you are and the routes you travel it is hard to access this visually without going to a Google search or some other engine. I really like it when you give a very quick screenshot of a map and your route so I can have a better feel for your expeditions. Great work. Maybe see you on the road someday. Bruce.

Your imagery is achingly beautiful! I don't know if it's just because you have an artist's skill for framing and composition, or if BC has such boundless beauty in every direction all you need to do is focus your camera and let it roll - but I sure appreciate looking at the world through your eyes...

Just because the bay is shallow now does not mean it was back long ago. Shorelines change due to plate movements. And there have been some major earthquakes over the last 100 years along the entire coast. Plus older boats might have drawn less water.
@GlacierPilotGst

Southeast Alaska also has isostatic rebound. The weight of glacial ice that carved all these fjords was enough to actually flex the crust of the Earth. As the glacier's melted the crust flexed back up and raised shorelines. The town of Gustavus near Glacier Bay National Park is still rising out of the ocean about 1 in a year.

I'm in love with the western Chilcotin/Stewart, etc., and have visited there several times ~15 years ago in my truck/camper/boat. (very similar to your setup) Just about drove (driving) myself crazy trying to figure where you were on this trip. You mentioned southern Portland Canal, but if so, how did you get there in your little boat ?? Coming back, there were buildings on the shore, so figured you left from Stewart and I mis-heard the southern part....?? It's what...??....100 miles....?? Then you went back to the 1st stone cabin and, IIRC, that was on Work (??) Canal out of Prince Rupert.

Q: what's your escape plan if your motor dies,your boats plastic hull is shredded,or your GPS dies or falls in the water,or your in need of emergency evac? Also a floating case for your gps would be ideal,or a piece of styrofoam glued to the back of it! Boaters use a floating device to keep keys from going into the bottom. What is the the make of your drone?

Dustin! What an amazing adventure as you do what most dream of doing! Long story short as I saw one of your videos a long time ago and loved it as it was the one about Georgetown I think. Ever since then I could never find your channel until recently about The Build Documentary! Loved it as I too have that same truck which is my fathers and I can’t tell you what a truck that is! We do landscaping in Alabama and it has lasted through the years. I also locksmithed for 10 years and I can tell you to keep a Fondu fork handy as it will act as a spare key. 😉 love the content and keep being an inspiration! Fan forever, John
