In August of 2024, Otto and I travelled to the northwest of England to start one of England‘s most famous long-distance hikes: Alfred Wainwright‘s Coast to Coast. 192 Miles across the country from West to East.
Come along for days 9 to 11 where we left the Yorkshire Dales and walked across farmland and along fields heading east to the North York Moors. This stretch is often portrayed as being boring, but we still enjoyed ourselves a lot and were happy to have some easier days and great weather. Even though it might not the most spectacular part of the walk, there are still special places to explore: the almost 1000-year-old Richmond Castle, beautiful churches, honesty shops, the best campsite ever and more... ;)
.....Stay tuned for part 5 😊
Watch the other parts here: • Coast to Coast across ...
Lots of love and happy hiking,
Elli and Otto 🐕‍🦺
🧭 Route:
• Marrick-Colburn (11.1mi/17,9km | ascent: 420m)
• Colburn-Danby Wiske (12.1mi/19,5km | ascent: 310m)
• Danby Wiske-Lordstones (17.7mi/28,5km | ascent: 920m)

Church Holme campsite is the best campsite on the whole C2C. When I stayed their they gave me a vegan ice cream to try as they were looking to stock them at the time and wanted a vegan’s opinion on them 😊

Just behind you there is the sky, this wonderful English sky, to your left and to your right, I see an ever green landscape, in the company of your comments full of simplicity and humor. I must not forget your dog, apparently essential. I'm not English and I can't travel. They say that at the end of the road, there is eternity. I don't know that, but there is already a large and beautiful island and it's not so bad. And I happen to like the wind. THANKS.

I'm sorry Otto felt stressed by the loud noises, though I know farmers have a job to do. Fireworks are another thing & I wish more people would consider how it might affect animals who are totally reliant on us. Those honesty food & drink stations that people provide are such a nice thing that people do, I've come across one or two whilst walking in the Lake District & it's always much appreciated whether I buy something or not. Otto's stamina is amazing, you are a great partnership. Look forward to the rest of the trip xx

Thank you so much for following along, that means a lot 😊 that's true, I totally get why farmers use these - it's just so hard to predict and impossible to plan ahead because you just never know exactly when and where the sounds will go off.... but it's only been on that stretch and one little area on the NY Moors a few days later where I saw people grouse shooting which was scary for Otto too 😢 Luckily he's always back to normal if he didn't hear any noises for a couple of hours/a day and is no longer stressed....

Your video arrived at the best moment, I was in our conservatory and had just made myself a cup of coffee to have with a custard tart. Thank you, I really enjoyed it. Have you changed your camera since you hiked JOGLE, the filming and audio quality seems to be better this year? It could be my imagination of course, or it could be that we changed our TV earlier this year?

Another excellent, informative video Elli. Always a Sunday treat to view one of your hiking episodes. If you do a Q&A it would be interesting to know if there’s similar ‘honesty’ boxes/rest points that you’ve come across in your European hikes 🤔 Really chuffed we have them all over the UK trails 😃 No matter how dull a place may be, there’s always the odd snippets of history on offer. Thank you once again for sharing 👍🏻

I was at a loose end and it really brightened my evening to see that you had posted another video. Otto, poor soul, has his trials with the bangs, and you quite rightly, are wary of the cows. But they probably didn't even notice you. It was good to see that you took advantage of the flat and boring stretch - and used it to collect your thoughts. Constant stress isn't really conducive to making the best decisions is it - and Otto seemed more perky for it. Thanks again for posting your videos. I really enjoy them. Cheers ! The Hildyard Arms is a great place to stop. If they are not serving food, they do have a selection of takeaway menus behind the bar and you can get food delivered - including Nepalese curries cooked by former Gurka soldiers who were stationed at nearby Catterick! I wish I'd realised that when I was there. I only found out when it was too late.

@@ellihikes Once I passed under the A1 trunk road all of the walking was done on the quiet country roads until I arrived at Ingleby Arncliffe. Then it was over the Moors until just before Gromont the Steam Railway place and the steep hill to climb out of the valley. When I say steep hill it was just that from memory its a 1 in 4 inclimb (for every step forward YOU take you gained the equal to 4 steps in height.

@@ellihikes See if you can track down Wainwrights Original Book of the Coat to Coast Route (and hand drawn images at a Library) approx £10 now but when I bought it in the late 1970s it was less than £3 that has all his Original hand drawn maps and notes. Or if you are near a local library in the Scarborough area they may have one, OR they may even be a book at the Pub at the End of the Walk at Robin Hoods Bay.

What make is your navy blue hoodie you are hiking in Elli, how does Otto's pads on his feet cope on a long distance hike, do you have to put vaseline or something on them?
@ellihikes
@ellihikes 3 ай бұрын
The hoodie is from Outliteside, a small German brand. But the material is a very lightweight fleece material called Polartec Alpha and the OMM Core hoodie is made from the same material and has almost the same cut and colour. I make sure to check Otto's paws every night and I carry paw wax in case he develops a hot spot. But he very rarely has issues with his paws (1-2 times a year), they are pretty toughened up since we hike a lot. If I know the ground is rocky and wet, I sometimes put some wax on his paws before we set off in the morning to prevent issues...

@ellihikes 3 ай бұрын
I totally agree :) I chose this title because a lot of other hikers I met, guide books etc. and even Wainwright himself described that stretch as not very exciting, sometimes even boring, especially compared to other parts of the C2C. But that's not what I thought of it, which I'm showing in the video. There is beauty everywhere, there are always interesting things to discover - that's the message of the video :)
