The Bosnian Waffen-SS units, particularly the 13th SS Division "Handschar" and the 23rd SS Division "Kama," played controversial roles during World War II. These divisions were formed largely from Muslim volunteers in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and they were part of Nazi Germany's broader strategy to exploit local ethnic tensions and enlist non-Germans in their war efforts.
SS Handschar was the first non-Germanic Waffen-SS division, established in 1943. Composed mainly of Bosnian Muslims, it was named after the "handžar," a traditional Turkish sword, symbolizing the division's identity. Himmler, saw the Bosnian Muslims as natural allies against the Serbs (Chetniks) and communists (Partisans). They appealed to Islamic identity, portraying their fight as a defense of Islam against communism, which they equated with atheism. The division was involved in counterinsurgency operations against Yugoslav Partisans but was also implicated in atrocities against Serbs, Jews, and Roma populations.
SS Kama, formed in 1944, was another Bosnian Muslim division but was smaller and less successful. It faced issues with discipline and desertion, reflecting the waning morale as the war turned against Germany. SS Kama was disbanded before it could fully develop, and its remaining members were absorbed into the Handschar Division or other units.
Amin al-Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, played a significant role in the formation and ideological direction of these units. A fervent anti-Zionist and anti-British figure, al-Husseini had fled to Germany during the war and collaborated with the Nazis. He was instrumental in recruiting Muslims to the Waffen-SS, framing the fight against the Allies as a jihad. Al-Husseini's influence was crucial in shaping the religious and ideological framework within which these divisions operated, although their effectiveness was limited and short-lived.

Excellent documentary that sheds light on a little known area of WWII in the Balkans. With respect to the coup against the Pact with Hitler, that was orchestrated, with full British support, by Serbian staff officers in 1941. That slap in the face to Hitler, launched him into a rage against Yugoslavia and the Serbs. Churchill praised the coup leaders saying "Yugoslavia has found its soul..." but it was really the Serbs who were anti-German. The rest of the ethnic groups like Croats, Albanians and Bosnians, enthusiastically embraced the Nazis cause.

This video provides an incredibly detailed and eye-opening look into the dark history of the Bosnian SS Handschar Division. The thorough research and presentation of facts shed light on the division’s formation, its brutal actions during World War II, and the impact it had on the region and its people. The use of historical footage, personal testimonies, and expert commentary really brought the story to life and emphasized the terror and devastation caused by this division. I appreciate how the video doesn't shy away from the complexities of the division’s origins, including the political and social factors that led to its creation. It’s a stark reminder of how ideology and manipulation can lead to horrific consequences. Overall, this video is a must-watch for anyone interested in WWII history, particularly the lesser-known chapters of the war in the Balkans. Kudos to the creators for producing such an informative and respectful exploration of a painful yet important part of history.

Excellent history lesson thanks. I served with the UN in Bosnia in 94/95. As a keen historian I often broached the subject of WWII with locals. The muslims often simply referred to Croatians as ‘Ustasha’ - they had long memories - however most of the locals (Muslims and Croatians) tended to avoid the subject. Some told me ‘Germans in the towns and partisans in the hills’. Shame the country has been plagued by wars

History is full of manipulations on the territory of the former Yugoslavia. The truth is a little different. It is a fact that the grandfathers of Muslims from Bosnia and Herzegovina participated in large numbers in the military units of the NDH. They were in Ustasha military units (volunteers) and in regular military units (home guards). Bosniaks were internationally recognized under that name (Bosniaks) in 1993. They were recognized as a separate nation in 1972 under the name Muslims. At the time of the Second World War, that nation was officially considered Croats. Please note that the official name of the Handžar SS unit was "13th Waffen Mountain Division SS Handschar (1. Croatia)". They had the Croatian coat of arms on their uniforms. So, the "Ustaše" were the grandfathers of the Bosniaks, and today they tell the Croats that only they were the Ustaše...

@@IvanBonic I'm curious if in former yugoslavia you learn about the history before? Yugoslav accession to the Tripartite Pact on 25 March 1941. Yugoslavia actually became an ally of the axis, after that the Yugoslav coup d'état happened, and this coup d'état was a british operation. Essentially the legitimate government of Yugoslavia was couped involving british operators, and AFTER that happened Germany invaded Yugoslavia. I feel like this is something they omitted in cold war yugoslav education for... reasons..

@@nelasa7379 You can say whatever you want and you can believe whatever you wish to believe in my dear Serbian sister of Islamic faith. This is the truth. God in heaven knows this. Have you ever heard of Osman Djikic? He wrote a work called “the Bosnian fairy”. Find that book and read it. Don’t forget the most prominent writer from Bosnia Mehmed Mesa Selimovic. He wrote that his Selimovic family stems from the Vujovic brotherhood of the Drobnjak tribe in Montenegro. Why would he write such a thing? So if they were Muslim and if they declared as Serbs, what does that make you? You speak their language and you hail from their country and you also belong to the faith they belonged to. Serbs are not only in Serbia and they are not only orthodox. I’m from Montenegro and I’m not orthodox. But I’m a SERB. I speak Serbian and my state was founded by the glorious Petrovic dynasty that were Serbs. Our king Nikola was a greater Serb than the king of Serbia. He wrote beautiful poems about Serbdom and about renewing Tsar Dushans state. You’ll ignore what I said. I know it. This is the curse of our people. Once a Serb turns their back on Serbdom they never return. Even if the Lord were to come down from heaven and tell you you are a Serb, you would decline. It is what it is. 24:37 this is what can be corroborated by what famous writer and partisan at the time Mesa Selimovic wrote in his book Memories or Sjecanja. I will paraphrase him, he stated that arrival of Handschar division to perform anti-partisan operations meant for partisans that they will have a lack of sleep for weeks, because the division units would keep pursuing partisans for a few weeks and partisans had to keep maneuvering to evade fights with them just so they would return back to their starting position once the division members ended operation, that division was a nuisance but it could not turn the tides of war in Yugoslav theater against partisans, it was introduced too late in the war to matter.

Muslims in Balkan after Ottoman's downfall experienced fall from grace.... They were the elite in the ottoman times, and then became second class citizens after Ottoman empire colapsed. They were struggling to make an identity and every attempt of them to make their own identity or some kind of sovereignity was brought down in blood. Balkan Christians, Serbs, Bulgarians, Croatians, Greeks... were done with islamic rule and superiority in the region. That is why Bosnian, Serbian and Albanian muslims were fragile ground, therefore easy for the Nazis to recruit to patrol the Balkans....

They made up 30% of the Nazi Croatian army, and in Bosnia they made up 54% of the Nazi NDH formations. Thanks to this genocide, together with the Croats, they outvoted the Serbs in the 1992 referendum for the independent state of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Before that, almost all Bosnian Muslims were in the Ustasha since the establishment of the NDH until 1943. Even in the Handschar government itself, as ministers. Later, they partly transferred to the SS Handschar and SS Kama divisions. Which was formed in 1943.In essence, at least 95% of the militarily capable Muslims from Bosnia and Serbia were in fascist and Nazi puppet units. Which of course is nothing new, it is a constant, it also coincides with previous wars and centuries ago.According to partisan sources, during the war there were 2.5% Muslims in the partisans after the fall of Italy, until the end of the war in 1945, which is practically at the level of a statistical error. Before that, not even 1.5%, so the story that they were there to a large extent is absolutely fabricated and not true. Also, among all the peoples of the former Yugoslavia, Muslims were the least involved in the partisan movement. However, your story that they joined the Nazis to protect themselves is a fairy tale for small children?! You are deliberately avoiding the fact that since the establishment of the NDH in 1941, Muslims have even been in the Ustasha government. And especially militarily, Bosnian Muslims were represented in the Ustasha units, even the majority of the Ustasha and Home Guard units were made up of Muslims in Bosnia. That is why the Muslims were targeted by the Chetniks and Partisans, not the other way around. And that is not why they are in a difficult position and that they are innocent victims"?! And "they will protect their local communities"?! So that they will go from the Ustasha kelro Nazis to the German Nazi SS divisions, where the bearers of the SS insignia and the Croatian checkerboard will also be considered Croats?! So they are practically double Nazis, they serve the Ustasha and the SS division, in both formations as puppets of the Ustasha and Nazi Germany! Sir if you are a serious historian then this is a heavy nonsense you uttered ?! And even after that, instead of joining the partisans, they didn't do that, they joined the SS German Nazi division and that when Germany had practically lost the war and Italy had already fallen?! Also, after returning from France and the training they had there, they slaughtered and killed in Serbia and Srem above all, almost exclusively civilians, far from Bosnia... So that part of the story is certainly not true for you. You also "accidentally" forgot to say that the Bosnian Muslim, Halim Malkoč, received their highest award, the Iron Cross, from the German Nazis precisely because of the suppression of this petty and small-scale rebellion! Himmelr said that he was disappointed that the former and current allies, the Muslims from Bosnia, acted like this... Thinking of the alliance with the Muslims during the Austrian occupation and now during Nazi Germany, in both cases the Muslims were faithful servants of the occupiers. If you explained it well, the Germans were looking for those Muslims who had already served the previous occupier Austria, and the unit was named after the Turkish occupier in order to serve the current German Nazi occupier... Nothing new for Muslims from Bosnia, history repeats itself. Whatever occupier comes to Bosnia, there are Muslims to serve him faithfully. The Austrians knew that, Hitler knew that, people from the US and NATO know that today.

@@HistoryHustle Well, that's exactly the kind of justification you're making, my friend, in your video, for reasons I don't know. You say, I paraphrase: "The Muslim Ustasha in the NDH, headed by them together with the Croats, were threatened by them and their local communities by the Partisans and Chetniks"! Because you asked yourself why?! If they weren't Nazis and fascists and mass murderers, wouldn't they be enraged by Chetniks and partisans?! so how do you go on to say "so the Muslims decided to go from Pavelic to Hitler, because they thought that if the Ustasha fascists would not supposedly protect them, Hitler's SS Nazis would"?! They will not join the partisans, but the Nazis, to "protect" themselves, and that when it is already clear to everyone that Hitler lost the war?! What comedy?! That's what you just said to your friend?! You're talking about a rebellion, 4 of them out of 26,000 Muslim SS Nazis?! And one of those Muslim Nazis, precisely because of calming down that rebellion, received the Nazi Iron Cross as a reward?! Did they forget to say that?! There is no tibalism, you just need to tell the whole truth and not half the truth, then get angry with me?!

@@SRB.4S So first of all your gonna completely ignore: - Bosnian Uprising 1831-32 - Bosnian Revolt 1875-78 - Bosnian Resistance 1878 - Herzegovina Insurgency 1882 Also the total estimate of Bosniaks being in partisans was 3.5% of total 800,000 fighters of Yugoslav Partisans. While Yugoslav Partisans in Bosnia had around 100,000 volunteers. Now it is estimated in 1977 that around 23% of Bosniaks have received pension from the partisan movement, and around 3% of them were in Croatia. That's already about 27,500 fighters which is much bigger considering that the Handschar division since its creation in 1943 lost around 9,000 fighters just in space of two years in 1945. Maximum estimates say that Handschar Division had around 21,000 fighters in 1943 minus 9,000 makes them 12,000 fighters in 1945. Pretty unpopular that N*zis even needs to mix Volksdeutschers and Croats into this "muslim legion". And let's not forget Bosniaks who started to identify as Croatian muslims such as Osman, Džafer and Nihad Kulenović, Hasan Biber, Ademaga Mešić, those kind of guys had big positions in Ustasha regigme so we don't claim them as Bosniaks. Also including independent Bosniak millitias that were popular in Sarajevo, Tuzla, Foča and Bihać could make this 26% (27,500) even more bigger considering facts that Green Cadre later aligned themselves with Partisans, got incorporated into 16th Muslim Brigade who is gonna later liberate Sarajevo. Also Husaka's Military, he has changed alliances multiple times for his own good, but his last alliance was with Partisans, and he got assassinated in May 1944. Also let's not forget the fact that some partisan local forces were refusing to sign Bosniak partisans and that the majority of Bosniaks were sceptical of partisans since they had also committed atrocities on them.

Its placed where essentially completly different worlds meet & was the crossroad Western & Central Europe, Eurasia, Africa & the Middle East. This led to only people with the hardest character & most talented warriors survived. Im pretty sure thats why we are so good at sports & rank high at many sports despite having a small population. These Ukrainians were originally part of the Schutzmannschaft protection battalion before being integrated into the 30th Waffen SS division in August 1944. This explains why they seized the first opportunity to fight the Nazis and contacted Captain Leclerc, who was in charge of the Belmont maquis, on 27 August, to join the FFI.

Don't mix nationality with religion. It was called : - 13. 'Handschar' (1st Croatian), - 23. 'Kama' (2nd Croatian). Handschar was formed from 40% of members of 'Crna Legija'. At that times Bosnian Muslims were aware of their Croatian blood, but Bosniaks belong to the Croatian tribe (Croats by the knee) as Evlija Celebi from the 16th century calls them, he lived at the Bosnian court for 30 years. Croatian = Nationality Bosniak = Regionality Slavonian = Regionality Hercegovinian = Regionality I hope you understand brother. Long live Bosnia&Croatia 🇭🇷⚜️

Let me give you a perspective from 2nd hand because 1st one would be from my father which explained it to me...year is somewhere 1900 to 1920 in what is present day montenegro. My family is muslim and living in a province what is called sanjak or sanđak in the old days. Balkan wars happen in well balkans and ottoman lose the teritories but the people that had not really sworn alligence to them but more like adopted their culture and religion remained. Now the land specificly where my forefathers come from plav and gusinje has become a spoil of war for the montenegrans. The montenegrans being a proud, religious and patriarchal society didnt wish for their new "spoils" to be muslim but orthodox christian and gave them a chance either die or convert to christendom....There were some who converted and many more who died but some survived the onslought perhaps only because of berlin congress pressuring them to stop not sure exactly. And here comes the point what i wanted to explain following this prologue. Many muslims just like my family (but not all of them) didnt feel the sentiment that the germans were the bad guys and montenegrins and serbs were good. Heavens knows they probably heard of british, french and americans from some old tales if any. To simplify they choose to fight the evil they knew and in this story the proverb the enemy of my enemy is my friend would be an excellent example...

@@hotjanin1988 To put it in context, history doesn't start in 1900, and there were centuries of bad blood between brothers of different religions. There already ware uncountable wars, raids, pillaging and monstrosity committed by those same Muslim Slavs upon their Ortodox brothers, and all of that happened in period between 1500 and 1900. You can't expect zero retribution for that. On the other hand, whatever happened in period between 1900 and 1920 - Muslim collaborators surpass it on unimaginable scale, when committing genocide of velika and Piva in 1943. No that analogy is not correct you can’t make that analogy, the Bosnian Muslims were not in any way threatened or persecuted by the Serbs until they started attacking Serbian villages and killing innocent Serbian civilians as they opportunistically became a proxy for the German Nazi occupation power and they also allied with the Croatian fascist Ustashas committing horrendous crimes against Serbs in Bosnia and Hercegovina, the attacks from Serb formations towards Bosnian Muslims was only reactive actions as revenge because of atrocities that the Bosnian Muslims committed before, these revenge attacks we’re mainly committed in rage eye for a eye and unfortunately Bosnian Muslim civilians were also not speared in these attacks, but they themselves provocad this with their actions if they hadn’t done what they did in the first place there wouldn’t have been any reason for rage against them and this kind of revenge reaction from the Serbs wouldn’t occur. There is a saying that describes this very well, you reap what you sow.

It's amazing when we look at history, we can see who the first king of Israel was Saul. Saul Saul, son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin, was the first king of Israel. He was appointed by the prophet Samuel. The second king of israel was king david. So these people that call Israel by the fake name of Palestine, they can't name the first king of so-called Palestine or the first President of Palestine, but there's so much world history that it was Israel. Chetniks were not only Serb-oriented, they were 99% Sefbs, Serbian radicals. They hated muslims the same way they hated them in Srebrenica massacre in last war in Bosnia. This muslims and Croats in Bosnia asked for any help and joined ustasha or partisans. Because of this terror over muslims, they asked ustasha and Germans for protection against chetniks. They needed arms. So they joined SS. Their mutiny happened when they were told that they had to go in war out of Bosnia. They wanted to defend their relatives in Bosnia.
