*THE BOURNE IDENTITY* | First Time Watching

This is one of the most influential action thrillers of the past 25 years. Before this, the James Bond franchise was the big spy action movie franchise, and it was full on fantasy gadgets and over the top "save the world" ridiculousness. Fun, but completely outside reality. This franchise brought things back to earth and started the trend of gritty thrillers we are still in now. It also popularized the quick cut shaky-cam fight scene that has become so over-used now. John Wick basically wouldn't exist without this franchise.

The Bond movies were escapism, more than action, Dr No was a thriller, but action sells better, so later Bond movies were action films. The setting was things people would never be able to afford to do, and doing things nobody would be able to do. It was escapism. Bourne was the first mainstream non-noir film that brought some realistic (in terms of being set in places normal people would know) action into spy movies.

To add to your comment about the quick cut shaky-cam fight scenes, the Bourne sequels really took that to an over the top level. The first (Identity) was directed by Doug Liman and by comparison has smoother action than the sequels (Supremacy and Ultimatum) directed by Paul Greengrass. Greengrass didn't even seem to be concerned when the action would go out of frame during a sequence. I heard Matt Damon much preferred working with Greengrass, but as a viewer I prefer Liman's directing.

As far as the quick cut/shaky cam thing, it had already been (over) used by directors like Simon West and sometimes Michael Bay. I personally have little trouble following a Greengrass fight/chase scene but I still can't follow the flashback scene in Con Air that supposedly shows what Cage's character did to end up in that prison. I say "supposedly" because I can't follow that fight AT ALL. All things being equal though I still like Liman's style better. Too bad he can't stay on schedule/on budget to save his life/career.

Matt Damon has said in interviews that the reason he looks so stressed in some of the crowded Paris shots is because they didn't get permission to shoot at places like train stations, and just shot it guerilla style instead. They had to get the shot and get out before anyone caught them.

The use of memorable actors in small roles, like Julia Styles and Clive Owen, brought more of the audience's attention to what those characters said and did. That's a nice touch.

What really put it so far above other action thrillers of the time was that it was an all-star cast, even for the small roles. Julia Stiles, the blonde assistant, had just come off of doing some big movies and was becoming a decently big name at the time, and Clive Owen, the guy that attacks Jason and Marie at the farm house/cottage, was an A-list British actor as well. And of course Franka Potente had just come off of doing Run Lola Run. Chris Cooper had just done American Beauty, and of course, there's Brian Cox. There are like zero weak links, zero. Stellar action flick.

He has all of like 5 seconds of screen time at the Gotham Stock Exchange (iirc he's the guy who tells Bane there's no actual money there). Another good one is rewatching Wet Hot American Summer and realizing that Ben was played by Bradley Cooper. Literally his first job out of school (I think I read later he skipped his graduation ceremony to go film or something like that).

The issue with shaky cam was when it was used too much it just made the audience confused and bored. I get the idea he does the shots from the three characters perspective making the audience feel like their in the room but when it's too choppy and frantic you can't keep up and lose interest. The original wasn't too bad but things quickly got out of hand.

I kind of agree with Jason's tactic of not being armed against police and security; it does not immediately alarm and elicit a firefight, that would escalate and slow his movement significantly. And speed and stealth are his main skills.

There are four movies with Jason Bourne and another movie with Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz. It gives you more info about the program and I think it is the second best one after this film. When I was in France a long time ago, there was a man on a motorcycle and he was looking at a gorgeous college student walking along the sidewalk and he hit a car like the motorcyclist in this movie and he flipped just like this guy did!

The character of Jason Bourne was originally from writing by Robert Ludlum, and first came to the screen on television when played by Richard Chamberlain (who was a television heartthrob like McDreamy or McSteamy that also played Dr. Kildare). It's not just imagination that makes John Wick feel like other action movies. John Wick was essentially made by the stunt men who did the action scenes in films like The Bourne Identity. John Wick was the action movie they wanted to make, instead of relying on tricks with editing and cutaways. In that way, John Wick is much like Unforgiven: a love letter to a genre, made by those who had spent their careers with the material.

This movie was so groundbreaking from every angle. From having a gritty sense of realism to the action to the commentary on surveillance and ethics of spying. It is actually an interesting take on post 9/11 America and questioning on the murky lines between freedom and security. Jason Bourne is definitely a trained fighter and marksman, but he is still a realistic human being who uses whatever is at his disposal to dispatch his enemies or evade capture. And his guilt and sense of morality causing him to lose his sense of self is tragic the more the story goes on. I know the 2016 film gets a bad rep, but even that movie deserves more love than it got, especially since its commentary on the danger of social media aged so well. I'm hoping they do get a sixth going to wrap it all up soon.

I remember re-watching this dvd so many times, the story is just paced so well. Knowing the movie's story doesn't detract from the moods and set pieces it brings you through on re-watches. I also agree that there's a chemistry with the 2 leads that is very addicting to watch. I also watched the dvd featurettes a bunch of times, which go in depth on some of the director's choices for cinematography. Keeping things mostly hand-held, clinging to his roots as an independent filmmaker and staying relatively low budget was a very conscious decision to keep the story grounded and realistic. Even things like the bathroom scene of Jason cutting Marie's hair, there is a clear choice to make it romantic and raw (which is true to the book if I remember right). This movie also does an excellent job setting the scene for the future movies. It ramps up hard in action and thrills from here, and the 2nd movie is my personal favorite.

The car used in the first chase scene is a Mini Cooper. This was in 2002, the same year the Mini was introduced to the US. Excellent product placement. Jason's memory loss was more than likely a traumatic disassociative fugue state. Cognitive dissonance of the training and conditioning bumping up against the thought of killing a child was too much for his brain.

That car you said doesn't really handle like a sports car is an original Austin Mini. Believe it or not, those things have a pretty rich racing heritage. Very small and light wight with an innovative suspension, they've competed and won on everything from asphalt to dirt in some fairly prestigious racing events.

This movie revolutionized the fast-cut action sequences that action movies emulate today, but surprisingly most movies today fail to capture what makes it work. In every action sequence in Borne, you know *exactly* what is happening the whole fight because every cut exists to show only what you need to see. Every shot adds clarity. Most movies today use this as a cop out to avoid showing the looser choreography. Its why the Borne Identity still holds up so well all these years later

It a very "European" movie that didn't have to educate the audience (like the difference between Luc Besson "Nikita" and Michael Bays awful remake "Codename Nina"). Just the fact the locals speak local language (french, german) and the street police actually is really capable - makes this a joy to watch as it takes its audience seriously. The female character is also really well casted. Franka Polente (German actrees) playing Marie is so believable real in her reaction and presence.

Great movie of one of my favorite books, the only thing the movie misses is the identity crises and romance between Jason and Marie, in the book Jason keeps getting evidence of his life as an assassin and he struggles with believing he might be a killer with Marie constantly telling him he does not act or think pike a killer. There was a miniseries starring Richard Chamberlin for this book that covered this aspect much better but Matt daemon sells the action so well I still think he has the better version.Happy Holidays to you and your family Nat

As always, some of the best movies are based on books. The Bourne series was written by Robert Ludlum from 1980 to 1990. The franchise has grown via multiple authors. They did a good job with the movie trilogy, if I remember correctly was one of the first shakey cam action films.

Saying these were based on the books is...generous. the books cover a completely different story, and the characters are substantially to completely different. These films' relationship to the books are closer to, say, Rings of Power to LotR, though these films are at least solid action movies, they're just not related to the actual books

Hi Natalie. First of all you are so much fun to watch. You are adorable and have the most endearing laugh. Of course your insights are what keeps me watching your reactions. The references to the Wick franchise are more than reasonable. The Wick movies are chock full of shout-outs and tributes to other films. There are a ton of scenes which are references to other movies, including this one. For example there is a scene in (I think JW4??) where when the whole world is looking for John it cuts to a black woman radio DJ giving the world an update on John's location. There is an older movie called The Warriors about a small NY street gang who are being hunted and are just trying to get back to their home turf. It cuts a few times to a black woman DJ is keeping all the gangs up on where the Warriors are. The leader of one of the other small gangs in that movie is the same actor who plays the head of the "clean-up crew" in the Wick movies. Anyway, to say that aspects of many movies are found in the Wick movies is accurate and very intentional. John putting a gun together from parts etc from a Clint Eastwood western etc. If you ever feel the urge to watch an old cult classic movie, maybe give The Warriors a try. Anyway, loved your reaction. Actually, Austin Minis (Maries red car) and Saabs were heavily used as off road race cars across Europe in the 70s and 80s. They were classed as sports cars. I don't remember them being used on stairs or wrong way daredevil sprints. Pretty good driving. Good reaction.

Highly recommend watching City of God, it's a Brazilian movie from 2002 about a boy growing up in the slums of Rio and his first hand experience with the gangs that controlled the city. Nominated for 4 Oscars.

It's strange...the Bourne movies were benchmark spy thriller movies when they came out. The biggest sensations in the cinema at the time. But since their release, they have faded into relative obscurity. Barely anybody talks about them these days. Hardly any reaction KZbinrs watch them. It is strange how they have faded from the public consciousness in the last decade or so since they came out.

This is one of my favorite movies. I watch the trilogy almost every year. It's very tight. Has great action. The car chase in Paris is fenomenal, and to this day, is one of the best car chase scenes of all times. Bourne is just enough of a Mary Sue to be able to overcome the challenges, without making the movie unrealistic or lack tension. I really love these movies... and haven't watched a single one of the movies released after Ultimatum. For me this is a perfect trilogy and trilogy only.

The Novels are excellent… The original starring Richard Chamberlain and Jacqueline Smith is good also…but very different. They really did a superb job with the first 3 Matt Damon films. The entire cast is quite solid as well.

Fabulous reaction, and you gave it great scores! If you continue watching the next two Bourne movies, you won't be disappointed. The books are a bit different than the movies, however they still did a good job with the movies, so you can let it slide by and give them a leeway. piece of advice, don’t wait long inbetween movies. They are all very connected and the 2nd and 3rd movie overlap a little, it’s really unique how they do it. So watch them closely together OR rewatch the previous right before you start up again

As I do enjoy the Bourne movies, I firmly believe the first is the best overall. The next 2 are good as far as story and acting, but the camera work is very shaky throughout. Would love to get your opinion on them when you get to them.

Watching your experience with Ted Lasso... I have to say, even though next season won't be until later next year, Shrinking is going to be something you absolutely adore and if you first time react to it, it will be a big watch for you. At least, I think so. It's a long the same sentimentality, comedy, and dirty jokes as Lasso. Along with a plethora of tearjerker moments. Such a rollercoaster... And quite appropriate, I might add, based on the profession it surrounds. You can't help but feel completely engaged with each and every character. Give it a shot.
