I came here after reading about it on wikipedia; According to a June 2008 article from The Guardian, "Two weeks before [the release of The Bourne Supremacy (2004)], [director Paul Greengrass] got together with its star, Matt Damon, came up with a new ending and phoned the producers saying the new idea was "way" better, it would cost $200,000 and involve pulling Damon from the set of Ocean's 12 for a re-shoot. Reluctantly the producers agreed-the movie tested 10 points higher with the new ending"

I really like the first part where he just ends up laying on the snow, it makes the ending way more sad and makes his character more natural. Like after this movie we almost haven't seen him remembering or sorry about Marie's death and that scene just suggesting a thought that he is so lost after what happened and have nowhere to go. It also could've explain why they almost didn't bring memories about her character that much in a 3rd movie, the scene is kinda strong emotionally, shows us everything he feels, his regret and etc, and after that they could just focus on the main plot. But instead of this we've got a very short scene in the train when he repeats some moments from the last two movies and after that they literally pretend Marie never existed and I find it really weird

The point of both endings is to convey that Bourne is no longer motivated by trying to find out about his past. I think this one conveys it well and I don't think theatrical does, at least not on it's own. However, theatrical one has the best line in the series, so it's probably better that they changed.

In Russia it’s not uncommon to see people collapse at the side of the road, on open ground or random public places, in my experience they’re usually blind drunk. In the summer, spring or fall it’s not such an issue but in the winter depending on where they are those people won’t make it home. It was also common to see cars crashed and abandoned in the evening often with lights on, doors open keys in the ignition and the driver wandering off away from the incident, also blind drunk. Majority of these instances were on a Friday because (in late 1990’s) the majority of people received their wage in cash at close of business Friday afternoon, you can guess where they went immediately after that.

Although the cinema ending fits the bourne franchise and persona much better, I personally prefer the alternative. It works perfectly in Supremacy, which was full of unknowns, loss and depression. Such a melodramatic ending wouldn't work with Identity or Ultimatum, but it's perfect for Supremacy (maybe cut back on the dialogue tho). The moment the music sounds, and we see bourne walking off like it's just another day, just makes the whole movie somehow sadder and more thought-provoking in general. It's the same song Extreme Ways, but it gives off a completely different feel compared to joy and hope in Identity, and surprise and resilience in Ultimatum, it just floods out loneliness and uncertainty here. Unfortunately, this ending wouldn't have done well for an action film, but I'm so glad we still got a taste of it.;))

A lot of people are saying how this ending is actually not bad (but the actual ending in the movie is much better. No arguments there.) Actually this ending isn't just "not bad", but really completely bad, and quite lame and cliched in many aspects, even without the final ending used in the movie for comparison. First, Jason wouldn't be caught dead or injured out in the open like that, ever. Even when he "didn't want to do this anymore", his determination to survive has always reigned. If he felt he was getting "sick" or about to collapse he always found a way to continue to at least find a safe and hidden spot to tend to his wounds or needs. His number one rule was always finding a safe spot first. He used a stolen bottle of vodka (high alcohol content) as a sterilizing agent for his bullet wounds and in Paris, when the first assassin went to his apartment, and again when their hotel was being investigated, he knew immediately to get the hell out and find a new place. Even in winter when he beat up the two police officers after he was questioned for sleeping in the park, he instinctively knew to discard his jacket to avoid easy identification. Lying in a field of white snow out in the open in a metropolitan area surrounded by apartment buildings dressed in black is exactly the opposite of avoiding easy identification. And that slow fall to the ground - lame. Next, he went to Moscow to apologize to the Neski girl, something Pamela Landy shouldn't know, so there is no reason for her to be there or for him to be rescued by the CIA - in case the producers (who at first objected against the reshooting of the ending that was ultimately used in the movie) forgot, the CIA, or the corrupt branch who knew about him at least, wanted him dead, so it is more realistic that if they found him, they'd put a few extra bullets in him to make sure he died rather than putting him in hospital. Supposing that the local police found him first - he'd be guarded at the hospital by local police for questioning later about him stealing a cab etc. Pamela would have gotten nowhere near him even if she did somehow found out about him. Nicky has no idea about Jason and the Neski case, she said so repeatedly herself that Jason (as far as she rightly knew) never worked in Berlin, so he couldn't have been discovered by Nicky. Abbott is already dead by the end and so is Kirill (supposedly) - how did Pamela and her team know about him? Waking up in the hospital: jumping out a window any higher than 3 floors would cause death, less than that you'd be lucky to walk away without broken bones and this time there's no convenient dead body to use as a cushion. The super lame and cliched part is when he's shown not in his hospital bed and someone says "he's gone!" (Oh the shock horror.) and everyone frantically looking for him. That is so expected and cliche and undos all the work previously done to make the (as of this one) 2 movies surprising at every turn, yet still showcase the character's qualities. Which brings me to the next point: not only does he survive jumping out the window (or climbing down it with a broken or injured arm in a sling??), he is seen on the right hand side of the screen, walking up to the red lights supposedly waiting to cross, and then a bus drives by, blocking him, and the camera pans to the left: it pans too far and shows people crossing the street and Jason is not one of the pedestrians. Okay great, the point is? Yes, I know the point is to show how he can quickly disappear in a crowd again, but, this particular way of shooting the scene (unlike the scene in Italy in the Bourne Identity) doesn't show that, instead it just looks like the camera panned too much and showed the group of pedestrians crossing the road. If say, it panned slower and still showed the street corner where the pedestrians were waiting moments ago, and Jason is not there, then that would have at least been a bit better. Instead it just looks like Jason headed down the wide open street instead of crossing it and the camera simply wandered off. So glad they changed it. Can't imagine why the producers were against a new ending, this ending is just so bad. If they used this ending it would have ruined the whole movie.

I feel this significantly diminishes Bourne's mystique and all round badassery. He has to walk away from a brutal day rampaging throughout Moscow. He cannot just collapse in the snow. Also a little plot hole here. The Russian FSB forces and government are hardly just going to hand over Bourne to the Americans after what he did there because it will be them picking him up in the snow. This also pre-emptively lessens any stakes going forward in future films because if he is captured, then all the CIA does is offer him his old job back? The fear and danger of the system constantly trying to get Bourne is now gone. We need the CIA to be shady, to have competing factions up against one another with differing agendas and whilst Landy may not be evil or one of the true bad guys, she does have authority and gravitas who wants to bring Bourne in. But this scene just kills her as a character. Come work for me now? It doesn't work. She still needs to be a bit of a threat to Bourne. They can work together against a common enemy in Bourne 3 but they were never going to be best pals as this scene is attempting to do. This ending is too nice which robs the series of drama and tension. The real ending perfectly highlights Bourne's audacity and legend. You are never going to get him even as the entire machinery of the Western intelligence community is desperate to nab him.

I may be in the minority but I don't actually like the theatrical ending, where he tells Landy to get some rest. I'm not saying this is any better, but essentially reusing one of the strongest scenes in the film as the ending reduces it to a gag. It also doesn't explain why he suddenly decided to go to the States. TBH, they could've just ended it with him collapsing in the park and the camera panning up to the buildings. I kind of like the idea of an ambiguous ending to this kind of story.

I wholeheartedly agree with you but I do think the final version they went with made a lot more sense given how connected it was to the third movie. At the start of Ultimatum, it literally picks up where it left off with Supremacy, which had Bourne escaping the police in Moscow with his injuries still intact after the events of the previous film. Here, he's being treated which wouldn't add up for the sake of continuity. I do prefer this ending for the reason you mentioned but for the intro of Ultimatum to make sense this scene would need to be cut out... or they could have just revised the intro for Ultimatum. Either way I still prefer the transition into the credits in The Bourne Identity the most since that had the best flow and best vibes for me.

Thank you sir, spot on! Greengrass and Damon went way too far with the last one trying to squeeze more gold from the goose, real garbage. Makes me think "Rocky 12' Pathetic.

I am glad they did not go with this one. (SPOILERS) The theatrical ending we saw was actually the beginning of the awesome New York mayhem in the third Movie. And I thought that was a brilliant way to tease fans of what was coming

The original is the best version ❤

Not bad. I prefer the one they used, though they messed it up by writing Ultimatum around it. If I have a quibble with this one it's that they wouldn't have been so dumb as not to expect him to vanish immediately.

Alexander Barsby I know. He’s Jason Bourne! What did you expect?!

Bourne identity was a remake of a movie from the 80s - brilliant written script! The original 80s version went straight to video - isn't well known. Bourne Supremacy is a great sequel! Personally, I think it should have stopped there, with Bourne somehow dying after confessing to the Neski girl. The follow up movies are flogging a dead horse - there's not much more to explore with the Bourne character. Repeating the cat and mouse chase theme becomes a bit tiresome in my opinion. But I do say Matt Damon was BORN to play Jason!
