What an incredible fight scene! It really captures the desperation of two guys fighting for their lives. Also, I love the way the camera followed Bourne's jump through the window! That blew me away the first time I saw it in the theater.

The setup (lead character jumping through window to safe a girl/fight with an enemy) is actually taken from another movie: Gorky Park (1983) with William Hurt. Although the camerawork in Gorky Park isn't as spectacular as in this movie, the fight is also pretty good and raw and realistic (especially for an early 80's movie).

With all that said the constant cuts really distract from the fight. John Wick really did it better. On all accounts, from camera angles to fight choreography.

@@Ryan-zt2xw I think it works great inside the Jason Bourne's movies. In fact, the fights are at least half (if not more) done with the sound design, the chaotic photography puts the viewers in a state of panic (notice the absence of any background music). It is completely intentional by Greengrass. Bourne is some kind of paranoiac and meticulous character that is always one step ahead of us, the camera work reinforces it. We have to run behind Bourne and cannot observe comfortably what is happening, we can only connect one step later thanks to the sound. The big problem that you are underlining is that other movies copied that shaky camera style for bad reasons, not to support the storyline, but rather to hide botched or cheap choreography.

@@masterpenguin8472 Yeah, unfortunately...although that does make me wonder...why can't movies be more like Bourne? Yeah, I know that statement will sound like I'm wishing for the worst since that statement is normally used as a negative connotation for action films, but that only more serves that question. I'm legitimately curious as to why more action films that try to be Bourne don't try to take more notes. It's already hard enough trying to make a cut-up action scene this compelling for anybody, yet a scene like this managed to do it for a film that kicked itself up to a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, one of the most perfect scores for not just an action film, but a third film in a trilogy. That is rare. I feel like The Russo Bros. did the action fine in Winter Soldier, but it still felt more like an imitation for me. I feel like the frame rate was ruining it a little bit, too. The special thing about this fight was that there wasn't any frame rate adjustments to make the action either look faster of speed it up. The median shot length, I do believe is longer than the Winter Soldier highway fight as well.

I think that Desh was no equal at all. If you look closely, Jason lands most of the kicks and punches, while Deshs' get blocked. Now if you take out the leg and arm locks (which are essentialy transitions into different "states"), Jason gets hit like a couple of times at the beginning of the CQC phase, and not badly =) after that, he just smokes the guy. Jason was waaay above him, skill-wise. But I get your point! They made him struggle just a little bit, to keep spectators on their toes!

Definitely the best fight scene in the Bourne series and one of my favourite film fight scenes of all time. No music makes the fighting seem more intense. I still prefer the Castel fight from the first one bc of how simplistic and beautiful some of the boxing and wing chun techniques are filmed. Weirdly what stands out the most is the shot of Bourne hitting him with a series of jabs as he backpeddles with the camera behind Damon at an angle. Again simple stuff but its tough to make jabs look cool on camera 😂. This scene is right there with it tho imo.

The thing I love most about this fight scene is that it's not trying to be flashy or spectacular. I love crazy martial arts battles as much as the next guy but here, you can sense the desperation of both Bourne and Desh, and how every single move can mean life or death. They don't pause to give each other stare downs or pull fancy moves; they are trying to eliminate the opponent as fast as possible, and I love how smart they both are in this regard; Bourne holds Desh in a wrist lock, Desh flips to get himself out of it, Bourne immediately counters by sweeping his leg, and then proceeds to kick him. Brilliant choreography.

44excalibur I think the way Greengrass handled that shot made it feel much more gritty. He didn't linger on the flip, it was a brief second and immediately then cuts to Damon sweeping his leg. @@Marcus-gw4bb In a way sure, but I didn't like how Desh was taken out. Reaching for Bourne's face over and over until he lost consciousness didn't exactly give off a highly trained vibe in my opinion. Sure, you only got ~10 seconds until you loose consciousness once the arteries are blocked, but still he could have attempted to get some space between his throat and the towel (or whatever it was), he could have grabbed Bourne's hands and twisted them in unnatural directions, he could have grabbed his sack and squeezed, he could have attempted a double leg takedown so Bourne would fall backwards. But that's just a minor complaint. Most of all I just didn't like the camera work and fast cuts. First fight against a trained assassin in Bourne Identity however, that was really something. In my opinion.

One of the best movie battles of all time. And I like how it's not anything glamorous. There's no trash-talking, no posturing. @@canadious6933 No, the choreography isn't better. Both are good, but here's the thing...it's one thing to criticize the style when it's used wrong, but it's another thing to just see the style and just shrug it off because it's there. Also, I do realize that mboth are part of the action genre, but I realized the problem with these complaints. You're comparing two different types of movies!! Yeah, the style is problematic, but people are only saying, "Why use one style" when the other style is the one that actually fits. It's obvious that The Matrix's fight scenes are more pleasing to the eye, but it's already the complete opposite effect the Bourne movies are trying to achieve. This argument unfortunately makes me feel like I'm trying to hate on movies I already like even though I know myself why I'm actually sounding like I am.
@jp3813
@jp3813 4 жыл бұрын
@@thefirstbourne149 I agree that they're different types of action. But when it comes to the question of better choreography, it's much harder and more time consuming to make long fights look convincing w/o shaky cam, tight shots, & quick editing. Hence, there's far more focus on the performers' movements in The Matrix. If both movies are up for a best fight scene award, Yuen Woo-ping would likely be the winner. Just like how Pulp Fiction would win best dialogue over the equally memorable lines of Forrest Gump and Shawshank Redemption b/c Tarantino puts more focus on it.

@@lampham5525 and also the fight feels messy in the good way. The room is small, and there's stuff around. Bourne was running to get to Nikky. That's why the shaky camara feels natural on Bourne because it's how that technique got famous even though it was already there but wasn't that familiar back then. But there's a difference between hand held camera like in The French Connection and shaky camara here on Bourne.

I think its cause Matt Damon and the choreographed stunts men know how to stage a convincing fight scene the shaky cam makes it more tense cause Paul Greengrass has nothing to hide. Whereas if you look at the last fight scene in Alex Cross it's littered with shaky cam mainly cause Rob Cohen is too lazy to have his actors fight good so he hides it with shaky cam.

+ghoa8630 It's a recipe book that teaches you how to make and serve a knuckle sandwich. Jason Bourne has obviously read it before.

Why would you say a film is disappointing if you haven't seen it yet? Reviews are useless as it turns out most of those monkeys never actually watch the film they are supposedly reviewing. Watch the film for yourself.

@@sumona8632 fun fact when he got hit (for real) by Matt’s elbow before disarming the book he almost legitimately got knocked out and he saw a white flash but not only that he almost lost his voice when Matt hit him in the throat for a second time

The shot of him slamming the book in the guys throat and then multiple times in the face was awesome!! But, there's a little too much shaky cam in my opinion

Hey, it is actually pretty seamlessly cut. That's why it is excellent. If you want really bad cuts, go watch Taken 2's final fight.

+The FirstBourne I have seen it and it's a terrible fight; I'm not saying I dislike this one. To me, there could have been a little bit less cuts
@thefirstbourne149
@thefirstbourne149 8 жыл бұрын
I would doubt a little bit of that. This guy is known for doing shaky cam in this kind of stuff. These cuts do take new perspectives with little difference in real continuity. Their cuts aren't done so lazily. They cut way less than the lazy fights. It's not just a series of quick cuts. Each one has a relatively long cut of someone doing something before the next cut, rather than just cutting after every hit.

its interesting how the film communicates with cuts and sound effects that hypnotize you into thinking you're watching a really competent hand to hand fight but really its just quick cuts between fancy contrivances

The reason this for me is my favorite fight scene is because almost every strike thrown is truly a death strike and the sense of them both fighting for their lives is there. Desh throwing Bourne across the room seems believable and I don't think I've seen another fist fight in a movie do that.
