I rowed for the University of Washington for one year (1986-1987). It was the most physically demanding thing I ever experienced. I still have my race jersey; it symbolizes a "never quit" approach to life for me. I cannot wait to see this movie!

I never rowed but I did graduate from UW, and my connection to this movie goes further because I live in Sequim and my relatives who lived here at the time grew up alongside and knew Joe Rantz who is center of the story. The film is getting pre-screening at UW on Dec. 7 and at Sequim High School on Dec. 8.

@@carolebusching392 Yeah, that's a bummer about the filming being done elsewhere. That may have something to do with the fact that Washington state laws make it too expensive to film in this state which is why so many films set here are filmed in British Columbia or Oregon. I graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle, which was Joe Rantz' high school.

As one of Bob Moch's grandson's i am incredibly proud to see this incredible, seemingly impossible story come to life on the screen... My grandfather told me this story many times when I was still a child and the full impact of it never really hit me until I saw this film for the first time. Again i want to thank Jenn Gibbons of the George Pocock Foundation for finding an advance ticket for me on December 12th. This story doesnt just tug at the heartstrings... It instills pride in an amazing group of men that beat all of the odds. I was able to take my adult children to see the film last night and all three of us where moved to tears at almost every moment in the film... In closing I genuinely hope that everyone is moved as much as I have been...

I was a singles' sculler in one of the very few university programs that offered sculling in the US. While the training is brutal (esp in early spring, we're talking 5:30 am wake up calls in the freezing cold, followed by the dreaded erg machine), there is something hauntingly beautiful about rowing on the water when all that hard work just comes together. I do miss it.

I grew up in Seattle and went to the University of Washington, and I loved the book in part for what it told about both during the 1930s. The book in its organization and presentation almost felt like a screenplay so I’ve been envisioning a movie for nearly a decade. I’m disappointed that they didn’t shoot in Seattle but I’m hopeful that I’ll like the film.

My Grandfather rowed for UW in the late 20s. The 1929 photo in the front of the book of the team members sawing a large log has my grandfather, Gail W Burleigh, in it. At Grandpa Burleigh’s funeral, his 3rd son, said he was most proud of his rowing for UW. He was a a dry land boy, very poor, but played defensive end for football in high school and a short time for UW. However, he couldn’t stay in college and had to return to Great Falls to help his single mother pay bills. He was a husband, father to 4 sons, and a cattle rancher in MT the rest of his life. He also helped fight the MannGulch fire of 1949 since he owned the Beartooth ranch close to where to smoke jumpers died. Looking forward to this movie, Susan

I dated a women’s crew member when she was on a university team. The training and dedication to the sport and her teammates was amazing. I will definitely watch this movie. The fact that I live in Washington state and have followed their rowing crews for decades has nothing to do with my interest. LOL

Thanks to George Clooney we have a wonderful movie: a true story about good human values and triumph over adversity. No woke nonsense.

Christmas - when the Boys In The Boat film officially opens - is in six days. I lucked into a pre-release screening last night and was knocked out, COMPLETELY knocked out. When a book is as good and deeply layered as BITB, the film that often follows doesn't usually hit those same high notes. This one definitely did and man, I was SO glad. Spoiler alert: there are no space ships or comic book characters in this movie, just fast boats and genuine heroes.

I will be watching this movie today. I was the Cockswain for St Joseph's crew team in 1979 - 1981. We then combined schools at the boat house to form the Oakland Strokes team. Alot of early morning practices before school with strength training as well. I am so glad I was a part of it all. Many of memories! ❤

I rowed 4 years for the Rutgers Men's Heavyweight Crew (RU RAH RAH). So exciting to see this book come to film. Truly a legendary story for a college crew to reach the absolute highest echelons of rowing so quickly. Badass crew! Nice to see all the other rowers in the comments! Who is ready to hop on an erg??!

A movie about strong, determined men, sacrificing themselves for the collective good, kissing girls, and eating red meat. I’m amazed this film was allowed to be made.

And the trees! They cut down trees, esp western red cedar. What they got out of that was the best lumber available for those magnificent rowing shells like the “Husky Clipper!”

In the chapter where the book talks about Washington's race against Princeton, it describes Carnegie Lake in detail. I kayak in that lake frequently and the description exactly fits what the lake is still like 100 years later. I think that was filmed on location, so I can't wait to see it. And as a very competitive dragon boat racer, I can identify with the team. I'll be one of the first people to see it.

Bob I think the rowing scenes were all filmed in the U.K. My friend plays Shorty Hunt and I’m pretty sure it was mostly shot here. I know the station scenes were shot at Kings Cross London too! They spent a large part of Spring 22 training on the Thames

@@simonlewis8507 That's so cool! Tell Bruce I said he did a great job, LOL. All the characters were just like I imagined. Sadly, the whole chapter on the Princeton race was omitted from the movie, as was Joe's early life. I guess there was only so much they could squeeze into two and a half hours.

The scene's that are supposed to depict the Montlake Cut where the UW shell house still sits, look nothing like the actual site at the University of Washington. The CG artists at least attempted to show the Montlake Bridge though the scale was horrifically out off with the original.

I loved this movie. I understand many of the critics points of view, but I just wanted a movie for once that didn't try to reinvent the wheel. It was a good story with some good drama. Maybe I'm not as smart as some of these critics... But I would watch this movie again and again.

I rowed while at Hertford College, U of Oxford (college second “fun” crew). Got hooked instantly. Then, haven’t rowed for thirty years until finally picking up good old C2 (the legendary Model D) during pandemic. I was barely in shape, struggling to break 11 mins 2.5k. Now, after 3 years, almost 5 million meters later and losing 15 lb, I achieved lifetime best of 7:19 2k and routinely go under 20 mins 5k (my UT1 routine) which I didn't actually manage to do in my twenties. This may not look that impressive for a varsity crew but I am 48, only 5’9”, 145lb. Anyway, as a “rower”, Boys in the boat is truly awe-inspiring in the ways that I think only rowers can fully appreciate. The book is a masterpiece and can't wait to see this movie THIS afternoon🤩

Rowing in 8's is great because it is a sport that allows David vs. Goliath stories. If a boat is firing on all cylinders, they can punch way above their weight, so to speak.

I love true, inspirational stories like this! It's amazing what people can accomplish when they are hungry and fighting for their lives!
