People who don’t suffer from this cannot conceive how horrible it is. It’s driving me to despair. I sometimes feel like I could lash out with extreme violence just because someone made a sound. I did try some Wimhof breathing and it helped a little bit, I feel. Thanks for making this video; I’m going to see an audiologist to see if they can help.

Eating sounds, crinkly chip bags, someone eating chips, mouth breathing, and the sound of someone swallowing a drink drive me to feel a crazed rage. The feeling is completely out of my control and makes me insanely uncomfortable. The dread I feel alone when I see someone sit down in a quiet room with a bag of chips is enough to make me leave the room or instantly put in my headphones that I take literally everywhere I go. All of it is like nails on a chalkboard to me. I tend to get more triggered when it's people I know. One interesting thing about this condition to me is as much as I hate certain sounds there are oridinary sounds I absolutely love to hear. Some examples are change going into a vending machine, fingers sliding against the pages of a book, cards shuffling, sound of carbonated cans opening, or the sound of sand falling into a pile. All those sounds make me feel happy and relaxed. Does anyone else here have that too?

I have misophonia and for most of my life I didn't know that this was Amy different from a time else u til my family kept telling me they didn't understand why I left the table during dinner so often. Some days or worse for me and some days are better. Chewing is probably the worst trigger for me but it depends, it could be a random noise that at that point in time makes me irritated or irrationally angry. Like sometimes when my dog starts whining I got very upset and sometimes I ignore it. At first I didn't know anyone else really had this when I found out I did but it seems to be rare. But this video is nice to show people who don't really understand because it's very hard to explain why I lose my temper and feel like I'm going crazy to certain sounds so thanks for the video!

My misophonia isn't a problem. It's people who weren't taught to eat with grace and thus smack and slurp, that's the problem. Uncouth, piggish, disgusting, maddening! Smacking is caused by eating with one's mouth open. Unless there is a medical issue, NO ONE should be eating with their mouth open. I worked with someone who ate like a cow.... smackety smack smack, every g0ddamn day. Drove me nuts, and my anger would flare up but I had to hold it in. This made me HATE her, and there was nothing I could do about it. Chewing with one's mouth closed doesn't bother me. It doesn't sound pleasant, but it can't be helped, so I don't get the enrage that smacking causes. When animals eat, the noise doesn't bother me because it can't be helped. It's only when people eat like pigs, that's when it enrages me.

I don't ever remember NOT having Misophonia, so it must have started very early in my life. I become severely angry when people make noises when they eat and when they talk. I also become angry when I see people chewing with their mouth open, even if I can't hear anything. For Eg, seeing someone chew gum from a distance. It's extremely difficult for me to be in social settings. I can control it better these days, but I could do a great deal of damage if I go into a rage. It was so bad when I was growing up that my family thought I was "mad". To make matters even worse, I would get teased because of how easily they could send me into a rage. It has been the bane of my life.

Thankfully, snoring is the only severe misophonia trigger I have. It makes family vacations in close sleeping arrangements horrible. i have to find some sort of escape- usually I end up on the bathroom floor. If I don’t have anywhere to go, I’ll lay awake silently crying for the entire night until the sound stops. I’m lucky that I don’t have any other severe triggers, but I still dread large overnight events that are supposed to be fun MONTHS in advance. I’m more afraid of the prospect of trying to sleep in a room with someone who snores than the fact that I’m visiting a foreign country.

My in-laws are the most hideous people at the dinner table. All of that smacking and sucking, like a clogged drain being fixed is disgusting. As I'm cursed with an imagination, the sucking sounds make me think of a giant human-sized slug squirming out of a muddy swamp, and coming to smother me with its sloppy mucus dripping everywhere, and once covered me eats me alive starting with my face. And it gets worse, one of my in-laws never learned how to use the tongue to remove bits of stuck food in her teeth, so she makes all these horrible clicking, lip smacking and popping mouth sounds that can last for more than an hour. The older I get, the more despair I feel.

I do have misophonia but it's highly selective and tends to only appear after spending too much time with a person like living with someone else for example. But as long as I keep a healthy amount of distance between me and others, like having days where I don't see them, helps keep the triggering response down. I also somehow experience ASMR as well. If the trigger sounds are made by a stranger it will cause an pleasant ASM response but if it's family or close ones my response to their trigger sounds is misophonic.

Single sounds may not trigger rage, but a combination of 2 sounds can cause my body to go in tense mode & its just as bad as nails being scraped on metal or a blackboard, or in my case, eating making shlopping, & snorting sounds. In order for me to eat without being triggered is listening to music at a level that drowns out the unwanted sounds, & you can forget wearing headphones, they only amplify the unwanted sounds. Ive also noticed that the ears can feel really warm if not hot, which to the touch, they do feel quite warm.

What triggers me is not crunching sounds, but shlopping sounds. I really find it hard sometimes to eat, trying not to make much, if any sounds because if i hear squelching while eating, i immediately want to eject anything thats in my mouth & my appetite vanishes. My adrenaline pumps & I find myself in a rage, & bad mood. The sound of people trying to suck each other's lips(kissing) can also trigger it I try my best to chew & force myself to keep the food in my mouth, but it sits there & I'm too afraid to chew However some times are better than other times so I also think it depends on what frequency you're hearing which can differ most days. Some days it doesn't bother you, other days, you can detest what you can hear, & trying to block your ears doesn't work so you're there, rigorously shaking your head while chewing resisting the urge to spit the food out, you cannot even enjoy food sometime! It can even override actual hunger, even though I feel hunger, I think of the chewing sounds, & you rather go hungry!

Mimiking the sound does help. Only, certain sounds (like cracking joints) isn't something I can do. Plus, mimiking the sound isn't socially acceptable in lots of cases, so I'm going to try imagining I'm mimiking the sound in my head. It's a kind of radical acceptance that might just cancel it out.

I wouldn't call it a "mental disorder." "Mental disorder" describes something like paranoid delusions or hoarding or necrophilia. Something you'd need psychiatric treatment for. It's probably a processing thing, something to do with the central auditory system in the brain. Would a psychiatrist be who you'd visit to deal with a central auditory system problem? Probably not, you'd see a neurologist, maybe, or an audiologist.
@Epistimi2 жыл бұрын
Good point! Eventually, it might be listed as a neurological disorder. However, some psychiatrists want to include it as a mental disorder within the spectrum of obsessive-compulsive disorders. I would prefer there to be less of a distinction between neurological and mental disorders since mental disorders are also rooted in brain dysfunctions. An audiologist can help rule out other conditions, a neurologist confirms it, and a psychiatrist or psychologist could help patients develop coping mechanisms.
@AugustMeteors2 жыл бұрын
@@Epistimi Those are all good points also. I suppose when they know more about what actually causes the condition, they'll know better what sort of label to give it, if they have to give it one. My concern is that so many imperfectly-understood conditions that might be considered invisible disabilities do tend to get defaulted to "mental illness." And of course mental illness should be no more of a stigma than organic illness, but we all know how that goes.
