Just been over to the Pocher website, saw they had a model of Colin Chapmans black and gold John Player Lotus 72 . I was at Hethel the day it was unveiled to the press. Graham Hill was there, just back from a leg injury, jumped in it and drive it flat out round the test track. What day that was. Back in the early 70s!

Well. You’ll do this one proud too. I can’t wait for every episode / part. This always was a beauty, in looks and sound. Fingers, screw drivers, knowledge and enthusiasm at the ready. Off you go Nigel……

It's awesome having an engineer evaluate the assembly process. Great catch with the space frame construction and engine.

The rear "brake cooling ducts" are actually gearbox cooling ducts and they were made of translucent resin, certainly not of kevlar in 1971. Same goes for all the other yellow parts of the engine and the rear wheel arches, which were all made of translucent resin. Look at the Model Factory Hiro 917s to see how it should be done. It is really a pity that Pocher does not get this right, because it is very typical of many Porsche racing cars. Tamiya did a good job too on their 934s and 935s.

Thanks Marc, I am aware of this now as this video was made a while ago. I believe the "yellow" parts were actually made of GRP using no, or clear gelcoat, thus the yellow appearance which they took on over a very short time. I also wish Pocher had moulded these parts in translucent plastic as Tamiya have done as you say.

A beautiful race car. I can remember seeing these race.its like the old saying “If it looks right it will go right. This, the Ferrari 330 P4 and the Ford GT40 represent for me the epitome of endurance racing. Destined to remain unaffordable for me. I shall watch you build this with awe. I wonder if there is a Martini Racing scheme n addition to the Gulf Oil. If there is I’d have to have both. Damn😢

A good reference for the 917 is the 1971 film starring Steve Mc Queen, Le Mans. Back in the day they ran the engines open but as they are so rare and expensive that they now run them with air filters over the inlet trumpets. There are a lot of good shots of the car interior and engine bay in the film.

I'm definitely going to order one!! Definitely be using any build vids you do also....those Pocher instructions remind me of haynes manuals and engineering was never my strongest attribute....still working on how sneaking this one past the missus box must be huge lol....I'll need to buy a month size pill box for screws, taps, etc

The carbon will be a step too far... it wasn't used on the 917.

@@NigelsModellingBench Yea I did some quick looking the kevlar was more yellow in colour I noticed comes in sizes of patterns, guessing small
@NigelsModellingBench2 ай бұрын
Apparently it wasn't even Kevlar Darryl, it was fibreglass.

Nigel is going to need a bigger coffee table 😂😂😂. That looks like a beaut

Nice looking kit. There's no kevlar as we know it today on a 1970 917k. It's kevlar infused tinted resin. There's no pattern to it. Check period photos of the engines. It looks closer to tinted clear fibreglass than the patterned type used in 1980s F1 cars.

Hi Nigel, Beautiful car, one of my favorites. I think that using Kevlar decals would look wrong as there was no such thing in the early 1970's, intake trumpets, ducting for cooling air around the engine and the fan were fiberglass and resin, as are the air ducts feeding the brakes. The only option I can think of would be to cast all that in yellow tinted clear resin.

I remember a .long time ago back when Bristol had a Beaties. seeing on a shelf a built up Testarossa of around the same scale. I remember talking to the manager and asking how much it was - needless to say it was way out of my price range. Reason for that was that the engine had moving metal parts. Wondering if that kit was an early Pocher?

It was Phil, I built one. I sold it recently and still have the ignition key for it.

@@NigelsModellingBench I shall certainly watch your build but I’m on the fence with regards to a purchase. I’ll give them a few months for them to sort the instructions revisions, like they had to with the others, by which point it will likely be discounted.
@NigelsModellingBenchАй бұрын
By the time my build is complete the instructions will be sorted. They look pretty good already?

Very nice model and thorough walkthrough. Would it be a big disadvantage to build this model without airbrush?
@NigelsModellingBench2 ай бұрын
Not at all. It is designed to be built from the box.
