The Redington butterstick has been one of the leading glass rods out on the market. It always had decent sales compared to other brands rods, and it always was pretty good. However they changed it this year, and I believe they hit it out of the park! Absolutely one of my favorite rods for fishing small creeks and streams.
So, generally with glass rods you loose accuracy, distance, and generally get a heavier rod. Not so with this new butterstick. This is hands down the most accurate rod at shorter distances I have ever used. Now being glass you still arent going to get a rod that will cast 100 feet with ease, but you are getting a rod that can cast further than most glass rods out on the market. And surprisingly this is very light weight, with a super light swing weight. I mean, there isn't a rod out there that I think would do better within 30 feet, casting small dry flies and nymphs than this rod. For small creek fishing around my area, I would rather have this rod than a $900 sage x, Scott Radian, or Orvis Helios 3. And that is saying a lot since they are all very excellent rods! And this is only $250 which is a whole lot cheaper.
So what this rod can do is cast accurately, with a light swing weight at shorter distances. All for a pretty good price at just $250. It is great for dry fly fishing and smaller nymph rigs. Their lineup while somewhat limited, does have in my opinion perfect lengths for each weight they offer. It is also very durable, and very unlikely to break on you.
What this rod doesn't do is cast large streamers or poppers, any fly with weight, or long distance casting of any sort. This is not a rod that is going to bomb a stimulator 100 feet across a large river to a rising trout. For that, stick with a rod like the Sage X.

Part 1-Thank you for your effort, and I really mean that, and I hope you won't take any of my following comments the wrong way! I've built rods Since 1977. 2- I've caught (fly fishing) the world record Steelhead on a 9W. Sage (gift from Mr. D. Green for test). Fiberglass rod not enough for 20" trout??! I landed a Monster 10ft.Plus Sturgeon, W/Glass Rod (Herrington Glass Blank)!!

Let me say, fiberglass is totally enough for large fish. It’s more the flies that I worry about casting with fiberglass. I have a friend who fishes fiberglass for redfish and does quite well. He can cast some larger flies, but that’s on an 8wt fiberglass. I’ve tried it and I still prefer graphite for heavier flies. Maybe just it’s my casting ability or something. Not sure. But I will say I’m more accurate with fiberglass at shorter distance, and more accurate with graphite at longer distances. All this is my humble opinion and not really based on fact. It’s a review not a scientific study. I don’t take anything offensive don’t worry. All good! Would love to chat more about it, if you want find me on Instagram and we can chat more. Would like to pick your brain. Thanks again! God bless!

I just got my Redington Tempt 2 wt. replaced with a Classic Trout. Now I wish I would have up-graded to the Butterstick. I really like the soft casting/action rods for small water. Everyone I've talked to loves their Butterstick rods! Thanks for the detailed review.

Thanks! One thing you might find with that glass rod is that it will have a heavy swing weight. Also, it will probably be super noodley, so it might not end up being your go to rod. But I think for small Creaks, you will find the butter stick to be your favorite. Anyway, good luck, and can you tell me what brand you got? Would love to get your feedback on it. :)

@@McFlyAngler just was given a cheap eagle claw and have not used it yet looked at the butter stick but did not want to spend money on a rod I was not sure I would use much so we will see how the cheap one does with small creek and alpine lakes it will be hard to get me off the maddison now that I live walking distance from it haha

Eagle claw might be ok, but it probably will be very slow. Might lack that oomph for sure that I described with the redington. Spend time time with it though and you might enjoy that action. Good luck man! Can never have enough fishing! Haha

Fiberglass is amazing. I have this rod. 4 weight 7'6". I use a 175 grain Commando head with a 5' floating tip. If I'm fishing for trout on small-medium rivers this is the rod I use. I also have a 10'6" 3 weight Echo glass switch that I use to swing 2"-2.5" streamers and I like it equally as much.

@@McFlyAngler Yeah I love the switch rod. I picked it up on sale for $210. Trying to learn to spey cast and I have no idea what I'm doing with a graphite rod. Too stiff. Fiberglass has really helped my casting because I can feel what the rod is doing and it forces me to slow down. Anyways thanks for the videos and the fly patterns. Good stuff. Tight lines!

So I went out and tried the glass switch rod out again yesterday. I was still having trouble casting but I was able to get fishable casts out. After a couple hours of thrashing the rod about with all my might my arms got tired. I lazily threw a cast with barely any power or effort at all and the line soared three times farther than any cast I threw all day. That was the moment I figured out how to skagit cast. At least with this rod the secret was to keep my arms in so close they are almost at my sides and move the rod REALLY slowly. Also looking behind me to make sure my rod wasn't dipping down below 1 o'clock was essential to getting a good forward stroke. Hope this is helpful to anyone who is trying to learn. I did manage to hook one decent trout so it wasn't such a bad day =)
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks I will try this. Man, I am not too good at it in all honesty! HAHAH. So, I think its cause I come from salt water, and I tend to really put some effort into my casts. Like I fling it out there, which you have to when fishing heavy sinking lines into 20+ mile an hour wind... lol This transfers to my trout fishing cast though, since its how I learned. Hard to break bad habits....

Part 3- This rod (7' 6"), Would Suck like an Industrial Vacuum Pump in 6 Pieces!!! I mean each piece would Only be 3" over a ft 😃 I know that the Technology in making Ferrules has advanced, but there's a limit!!One of our Australian brothers, tried to point this out in Comments. My late friend Gary Loomis (founder/owner/G.Loomis) left Lamiglas Rods and opened G.Loomis factory.over a Ferrule issue!! I used to get our Blanks for "Johnny's Rods from Gary when I worked at Johnny's Rods (While attending college). Oh did you mention I that Reddingtons rods are made in China?!. No not all Rods, Made overseas are bad. Infact recently, I tested 2 TFO Spey Rods (made in S.Korea). They're Excellent!! Soon as I get over this awful case of Flu, I'll publish it on KZbin. Koreans make State of the Art Smart Phones, Computers, 1st grade Samsung DSLR Cameras!!! Someone gave me a Chinese Rod, made from Cebeles!! It was a Piece of Crap!! It broke right after trying to Set the drag Before Fishing!! It was an Unadulterated Piece of Crap!! Please know that a Graphite Blank is Easier to break than a Comparable glass. But rods aren't for removing Boulders from rivers!😄😀

Almost every rod I've broken has been from closing in a back hatch on SUV on the tip. One other was broken at the joint from huge bass in a pond that had been put in at 8lbs 3 years earlier that had been put in during spawning (full of eggs) the other was a 1wt in a pond fishing through a tree for gills small bass hit and the full weight straight in n tip from branch.

Hey man, nice review apart from one thing I just don't get. Why would you want 5-6piece rod? To fit it into a backpack? Mate, have you ever fished with 6piece rod? It is much heavier and the action is also compromised. Than fever pieces you have that better.
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 5 жыл бұрын
Yes I have a 6pc Remington CT that is amazing! The action isn’t changed much. Redington is doing some amazing things! But yes that’s the reason, to fit it into a backpack... the 3pc is just a little long for a backpack...

All the old saltwater rods were fiberglass . Graphite is new , there’s fast glass rods as well . Depends on the tapering . Good review , beautiful rod .
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, yes there were saltwater fiberglass rods back in the day. But like you said, graphite is new. I mean people built the pyramids without power tools, but it’s easier to build today with them. Now one thing I can full agree on is that the action of fiberglass can vary depending on the taper, but it’s still going to be more slow than graphite at the same taper. I will admit, applications like I discussed, fiberglass still does better than graphite, but I just don’t see it for casting distance and fish fighting power. But this butterstick completely re-wrote my mind on fiberglass for small creeks, maybe newer technology glass rods for saltwater have something... I just have to give it a try I guess...

The 8wt would be great at casting large bass in heavy cover with a sinking line
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 6 жыл бұрын
Maybe, I just don't see the power behind it. Like there are other rods better at this than a glass, but I've never used glass for large fish, maybe the 8wt is better suited for it. LOL
@KillerFuzzOutdoors
@KillerFuzzOutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
I just have a dilemma where I fish in central Texas, graphite tends to over power the stream , I use an Orvis Superfine glass 6wt to cast articulated flies, you have seen the rivers around here. I like the price of this 8wt rod. I wanted to get the glass 8wt by Orvis just to cast into heavy cover. You think this 8wt rod could handle sinking line?
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 6 жыл бұрын
Thats what I was talking about, I am not sure it can handle large articulated streamers even. But again I haven't tried it. If you have tried the Orvis Superfine in 8wt then this will probably do everything that will and more. If your doing short distance casts im sure it will handle a sinking line. You might even want to downsize a line size also, especially with the high grain modern lines now days that are made for super stiff graphite rods. I would say look at the average grain recommendation for rod weights, and keep your line grain towards the lower end of the recommendations. Hope that helps?

Looking for any advise I am still what I would consider new to fly fishing, I understand you said that the 8wt might not be good for bass. However I am making short casts in tight areas, I broke the tip off my current setup twice in two trips, so I was hoping the glass rod might be tougher and still get the job done. I just have a good feeling about this rod
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 4 жыл бұрын
Well I think it could work for you than. I have a friend that uses glass for bass. But for me it’s hard to cast big flies with glass. But it might work for you. It won’t cast as far as a stiff graphite, but if your making short casts than use this rod and it will load earlier so, maybe great for bass? Just maybe use a good weight forward line with it. Hold on let me put links to some suggestions... I’ll post in a second.
