I think you've done an incredible job for someone who would like to actually walk through or travel on this ship. Crew area is critical and I would get rid of one or more of the VIP suites so they can live comfortably. Happy crew = happy ship. Great video. Thank you.

The Yacht is owned by Nat Rothschild. It was ordered in 2007 and then there were problems with the builder, which tied the yacht up in court. Eventually they moved it to Admiral to finish it. He probably wants nothing to do with after all that. It's a nice explorer though with a great owners suite which places the owners bed as close to center as possible.

Woo hoo, found my new most favorite expedition yacht here! Previously it was the 107m Ulysses, but this one here packs all the important features into a smaller & more practical package. Anyone want to give me $150,000,000 so i can buy it? And i'll also need $20 million / year to operate it. And a few millions more for the helicopters. And i'll also need $60 million for the Gulfstream G650 private jet to take me to the yacht. Oh boy, the costs do start adding up, don't they?

Thanks for the overview. Quite nice. Btw, another almost identical set of plans i saw for this yacht did show a shallow tank deck below this one, like you thought. On the subject of the tiny crew gym, it's possible the gym was originally planned to be larger, but maybe they found they needed another crew cabin, so we got that one oddball crew cabin down there, carved out of the original gym space. M/Y Ulysses (the 107m one) did something similar in its first refit, where the original crew gym got replaced by four additional crew cabins. These expedition yachts seem to have ravenous appetites for more crew! Another slight oddity is that 'Heli Operations Office' on the bridge deck. It's really more of a cabin, with a bed, wardrobe, and bath, and is indeed labeled 'Pilot's Cabin' in some of the pictures elsewhere. A rather nice Pilot's cabin! Assuming they're not referring to the Ice Pilot or somesuch, then now i don't know what they mean with that other Heli Pilot's Cabin down below. The one below might have ended up as the Executive Chef's cabin instead. Note that something else i expected to see in an expedition yacht this size, would be a small Medical Room. But i can't find one anywhere here.

Having a difficult time feeling as sorry for the crew living in that crew space as you seem to dwell on. That’s a massive and well-appointed space relative to the working/living conditions on lots of these boats, and this monster travels to some incredible places that these nice folks get paid to go. They’re not prisoners, they’re employees. They’re free to find themselves another gig if the crew appointments on their multi-million dollar floating home aren’t palatial enough for them.
@YachtReport

I think you’ve misunderstood my comparison. I was simply pointing out how much space the guests have compared to crew. Also every boat is tight for crew space so this idea that they can find another boat is incorrect.

@@trashking1867 current generation of starlink satellites can't communicate with each other yet. So the satellite needs to be in range of booth the ship and a ground station. With starlink satellites being in a low earth orbit the area they can cover is quite limited, meaning in the end you won't get a starlink connection further than maybe 100miles of the cost in best case currently. Don't expect starlink do be in maritime use within a few years. It might happen this decade but nothing is certain yet, as spaceX hasn't figured out the laser based communication between satellites yet and when they have figured that out they still need to replace all already existing satellites with the new ones.

Many wealthy individuals build yachts to sell them. Huge profits can be made on a newly completed vessel. Many new buyers and those looking to upgrade to a larger vessel don't want to wait three plus years for a new yacht to be built. This is why there is a market for new yachts. Or this yacht could have been built on speculation by the shipyard. Many shipyards will build a spectacular yacht to enter into the major yacht shows. These vessel are for sale from the beginning with most sold by completion. Cheers

@@J.Cameron.Stuart.Adams. Even with a low cost of money, this seems like crazy speculation. I can understand a yard embarking on this if their borrowing costs are low, they don't have a current order and they want to keep their work force engaged. But for a billionaire who has demonstrated the ability to make significant money in another field, it doesn't make sense to tie up this kind of capital on a spec yacht build that may be sold at an ultimate loss. An interesting point that was glossed over is that the boat has (3) electrical generators powered by Cat c18 engines. This is what many mid sized 60-100 ft boats use as the propulsion engine. Places like Yacht World and Denison Yacht sales usually have deck plans included in the pic set. All things equal, I think a Westport 130 would be enough to meet my needs, plus it is pretty.

The deck you are not seeing on the plan is the bilge deck, where all the big tanks are located. It's usually never shown as an actually accessible deck since you can usually only get in there through scuttle access hatches not to mention it's classified as a hazard area (dangerous fumes, as well as flamables)that is restricted access to engineering staff only.

Here's my best semi-informed estimate. It won't be completely accurate, but shouldn't be too crazily off-base either. First, because this is an expedition yacht, you've got to have more crew than usual, due to long voyages, continuous watchstanding, maintenance, etc. A mediterranean yacht that's only out for a few days at a time doesn't need as many. Actually, only 24-26 crew is probably cutting it really tight for an expedition yacht of this size and capability. The only way i can get the crew down that low is by skimping on stewardesses, on the assumption that service standards are relaxed a bit on expedition cruises. Note that i'm assuming that a couple of the senior 'private-cabin' officers are married and have their spouses working on board, sharing their cabin. This isn't unusual on megayachts. This allows me to increase the crew count slightly to 25 or so. Otherwise we'd be limited to 23 crew or less. So, my estimate is: ** Captain (probably doesn't stand watches on a yacht this size) ** 1st Officer (bridge watchstanding officer) ** 2nd Officer (bridge watchstanding officer) ** 3rd Officer (bridge watchstanding officer) ** Chief Engineer ** 2nd Engineer ** 3rd Engineer/ETO (Electronics Officer) (i'd guess this is about the minimum number of engineers on expedition yacht this size). ** Executive Chef (i'd expect the exec chef to probably have a private cabin, on a larger yacht like this). ** Assistant/Crew Chef. (having only two chefs is probably cutting things close here, with having to staff two galleys) **Helicopter Pilot (like eSysman said, a private cabin is unusual here, i don't think the heli pilot usually rates high enough for that. Maybe the original owner had a special long-time favorite pilot or something). **Helicopter Mechanic (necessary for a yacht-based helicopter of this class). (note that for an antarctic cruise, you're required to have a second backup helicopter too, like maybe a small Robinson R66Turbo or some such. Which implies you'd need a second helicopter pilot as well in that case. Also if you're doing IFR in the main helicopter in stressful expedition settings, you may want a co-pilot for the main helicopter too.) **Purser (probably married to the Captain and sharing the Captain's cabin, not unusual). ** Chief Stewardess ** Stewardess ** Stewardess ** Stewardess (i'm really skimping here. A mediterranean yacht of this size would probably have twice as many stews.) ** Boson ** Lead Deckhand ** Deckhand ** Deckhand ** Deckhand ** Deckhand ** Deckhand (i'm not skimping here quite as much, though my number is just a very approximate rough guess. You need deckhands for bridge watchstanding, helicopter operations, tender operations, watertoys, yacht exterior cleaning & maintenance, divemaster, etc, etc.) ** Really should have a Medical Officer too, in an expedition yacht of this size. The owner might bring their personal physician along, who would probably be in one of the guest cabins. Otherwise, you often have a stewardess/medic or deckhand/medic dual role. But i'm a bit surprised to not see a small medical room on this yacht - i'd expect to see one on an expedition yacht this size. ** Maybe a Security Officer too? For an antarctic expedition, you'll need some additional staff as well (some of these would probably be using guest cabins): ** Ice Pilot (required. Basically a second Captain, experienced in polar operations). ** Expedition Director (probably necessary for a yacht this size. I'd think you'd probably want an expedition director all the time, really, and not just for polar operations.) **Maybe an assistant helicopter pilot. ** Maybe some additional guides/naturalist types as well.

Separate crew mess/galley, often they are combined, and they don't down tools and eat all at the same time, no Scottish unions here m'laddy. The only time you might get it fill would be if the Captain wants to speak to everyone before a charter. They have another lounge area, gym as well. This is not a huge megayacht so a hanger is great. One thing missing, or did I er miss it, a pool. The smaller communication 'balls' may be due to a different system being chosen that uses a higher frequency hence smaller satellite dishes.

Ok all new MLC compliant yachts are required to have a gym. They had to make it mandatory to ensure the crew had somewhere to exercise. And again MLC boats cannot have more than 2 people in a cabin, again a rule had to be implemented to stop squeezing too many people into a boat. As for crew mess, if the owner or guests are onboard then yes it’s unlikely the crew will eat at the same time. However in yard periods and when there are no guests the crew generally eat together. Antennas require a large dish to increase limits of reception. The further away from the equator you go the larger dish you need to continue getting a reception.

No pool. To fit this sort of helicopter capacity on an expedition yacht this size, compromises have to be made all over the place. The heli hangar ends up where the pool would've normally have been, and also uses up the pool's weight allowance.

I want to mention one thing I didn't see anybody else say in the comments. As small as the crew area is, they will usually be running two or three shifts. Therefore the galley, for example ,will never have 26 crew eating at once. And even though the crew quarters have bunks, they may be on opposite shifts, so the room is "private" sometimes.
@YachtReport
@YachtReport 6 жыл бұрын
Well all boats are different. But there are times when crew will eat staggered yes because of work especially with guests onboard. However there are plenty of times, in fact the majority of the time in my experience that most if not all the crew will sit and eat together.

Pretty large crew for something short of 80 meters, any thoughts as to why the crew requirement is so high? I see many 70-80 meter with crew requirements below 20.

I think anyone traveling with the owner/charter guest does not count towards required crew. Crew quarters look nice, maybe small toward forward, but the private head for each room is nice.

This vessel has more volume due to additional decks. In addition there needs to be crew for the helicopter. Some of the crew may only be on board when the owner and/or his/her guests are. Like if the helicopter stays at the owner's residence or a nearby facility. Some yachts run with a smaller crew, until guests are on board. More crew is brought on for such instances. And yes, as someone else pointed out, there are regulations in place to ensure there is enough crew to handle and maintain the vessel without over working any of the crew. Granted, if there are terribly demanding guests and a cheap owner, the crew can be over worked. Sadly it's a culture where nobody dares to speak up. Unfortunately it'll take a tragic series of events before real change and accountability is put in place. The same can be said for cruise ship staff and crew. And some crew will ask to work double shifts in order to take time off at a particular destination. But a double shift is not working two eight hour shifts, it's working two 10-18 hours shifts. This means one crew member could be up 32 hours. Obviously a captain or first mate wouldn't do such a thing. However, another crew member responsible for your safety or theirs do. The danger of a deadly mistake is there if proper protocol is not followed. One young man did just that. He worked two shift, went out for a drink with the rest of the crew but decided to return before everyone else for some much needed sleep. The yacht was locked. So he decided to climb to the top deck to see if one of the access door was unlocked. Unfortunately he fell off the boat, hit his head and died. He was sleep deprived and added to that a little alcohol. The mix of the two severely impaired his judgement causing the fall. I don't know if the double shift was his choice or was necessary to ensure guest comfort. Either way it was a tragic loss of a sweet young man. The lives of his fellow crew members, his family, and friends was changed forever. According to his mum: as expected in the yachting world, the crew had to put this tragic death aside and pick up new charter guests, Brad & Angelina, the very next day.

Cameron Hollis That happened on a boat that the Pitts chartered?
@Primalxbeast
@Primalxbeast 6 жыл бұрын
Cameron Hollis I don't doubt that yacht crews are often overworked, but young people go out drinking and get themselves hurt making bad decisions all the time. I don't see how that was the fault of the yacht owner and I'm not surprised that they stayed on schedule considering how much is paid to rent a yacht for a week.

FWIW I think the Helicopter was VERY important to the owner - the hangar so it can always be along and the pilot having a cabin means its a full time staffed position in itself. Versus only on board when the "owner" is. He knows who that pilot is (or did when he planned it) so the cabin was built specifically for him/her. If Jr is right about the owner he had a major political controversy while hosting meetings on a yacht while this was being constructed. First World (Billionaire) issues...

Nearly every boat I’ve worked in that had a helicopter also had a cabin for the pilot. As usually only the larger boats have them they have the space.

When the boat is on charter or guests aboard they run shifts around the clock. Guests are looked after 24/7 There's always a crew member on watch, fire/security watch and a crew member on call for that midnight snacking guest. Watch Below Deck on TV. It's pretty accurate, trust me😉

Don’t forget of that 20 is at least a captain, first mate, and a few deck hands.... but it includes the staff that do the housekeeping too, a cook, etc. Staff adds up fast but you can’t always double up on roles. The captain won’t be doing the laundry any time soon....

@YachtReport
@YachtReport 4 жыл бұрын
The helo would be strapped down but if the weather is rough enough you could still lose it. We did a very rough trip in the Med last year with a 5 tonne helo on our deck and the pilot was super stressed as the weather was bad. He thought a few times we’d lose it.

I love your video but I found a lot of deck plans to super yachts online. Maybe not mega yachts but such as Dilbar but a lot of super yacht builders and charter companies post deck plans on their web site. Maybe not as detailed but you get the general feeling of space on the yacht including how small and tight the crew spaces are. Search for a website called YachtCharterFleet. They have many super yacht deck plans. Also, would it not be more interesting if the crew cabins and spaces were larger on Planet Nine compared to other yachts of similar size or larger? I understand what you were trying to say but this is typical in all service industries. When catering to the super rich, the staff and crew are always left short on space and amenities. Thats what I found working in the industry.

Free idea for someone to make ungodly amounts of money on: Re: ice breakers Instead of using raw power to break up and push through the ice, you have coils running through the hulls of the ship that heat the hulls and melt the ice for smooth sailing right through the ice and no chance of getting stuck. It would be like an iron going over an ice cube. Thank me later.
