Miku, Rhythm guitar, additional vocals, lyricist and band founder used to work in a Maid Cafe when she was trying to break into the industry as a singer. She came up with the idea of a band with a Maid aesthetic that rocks.After she founded the band she realised that her voice wasn't strong enough for their music so added Saiki, Miku then learnt to play guitar under the tutelage of Kanami the lead guitarist.

The song was made for an anime, as such, the lyrics are referencing the story of that anime. Also, Miku likes using words that can mean two different things and even puns. So sometimes a direct translation might not help you understand the lyrics.

And a thing about the maid outfits, Brave Heart: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids. Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. IMHO you have just discovered the best rock band on this planet right now. With over 130 songs in their catalog, these incredibly talented young Japanese females are the best thing to happen in rock and roll in the past decade. I'm 75 and have heard and seen some of the greatest rock acts in history These women can musically hold their own with ALL of them. The are so talented, so cohesive, and so professional that after listening to them you will soon agree. Now, you can react to "Thrill", the official music video, their first big hit, or "Hate?", the official live video, which has been a popular introductory video for the group. Second Vocalist & Rhythm Guitarist, Miku used to work in Maid Cafes and thought of combining the Maid Look with a Hard Rock sound. She left the cafe after winning an idol competition but quit that after a year wanting to return to her initial inspiration. She got a record deal and found Lead Guitarist, Kanami, who taught her how to play guitar. Kanami recommended Drummer, Akane who in turn recommended Bassist, MISA. Lead vocalist was found at their agency and the rest is history. Now you have 10 years of back catalog to catch up on. This song was one of their many, many Anime Theme Song commissions. It's the season two closer for the Netflix anime, Kengan Ashura. But check out 'Unleash' in which they appear in anime form themselves.

SHAMBLES is an ending theme for a fighting anime, which informs the lyrics. ASHURA is a sanscrit word. “SAI”(最) = most; “KYOU”(強) = strong SAIKYOU (最強) = Invincible You’ll find that translating Japanese lyrics into English is very difficult. Lyrics are information dense, filled with idioms and expected-to-be-understood cultural references. The most accurate translation requires collaboration between native speakers of both languages. Fitting the result into words that match the flow of the original song generally is not possible, especially sing Japanese grammar (setting the scene at the front, and wrapping up with the verb at the end) is often the reverse of English. A dictionary-based translation is generally pointless. The tendency to omit both the subject and the predicate from a Japanese sentence further compounds the challenge. Fun fact: KUDASAI, while taught as being “polite” 18:15 is actually the abrupt/rough imperative form of “give me.” Being truly polite requires finding a way to communicate your desire without ever mentioning it directly, based on the assumption that the listener will be picking up what you’re putting down. Direct communication might imply that you think you’re speaking to an in imbecile. Or a child. Or an American.

I started learning Japanese for academic reasons. As oart of my listening pracrise, I started to listen to Japanese music. This is how I discovered the Maid. I am currently at the level in Japanese where I can form simple sentences, read hieragana, most katekana and a few hundred kanji.. I catch words here and there in songs altough there is much I still don't understand. I not even close to being literate yet...

What an awesome first reaction, congrats. This is a great Band-Maid song to start with, but there aren’t any bad ones. I’ve been following all genres of rock music for decades and these ladies have completely blown my mind. They are even better live. I would highly recommend that you try the official live video of ‘Hate?’ (The ? Is correct). You will truly see what unbelievable musicians they are.

Welcome to Band Maid, the best rock band on the planet (imo of course!). This is one of their harder songs, if you’re looking for something more “poppy”, try Choose Me, Alone, Freedom (live)… you’ll have a good time. As far as the Maid look. The founder of the band (Miku, she’s wearing the very frilly outfit with pigtails in her hair and a red rose) worked in a maid cafe in Japan and thought it would be cool if adorable maids played hard rock. So she formed a band, some members are more into the look than others, but they all wear maid outfits (they claim).

Actually your choices were kinda of wrong….this song was written for a Japanese anime (I just can’t remember the name of the anime…sorry) but it is a great song and most of the lyrics revolve around the action and characters in the anime…Miku Kobato (wears the red rose) - band founder, rhythm guitar, vocalist, lyricist is very proficient and gets involved in the anime’s that she writes lyrics for…The band has over 140 songs and I have yet to find a bad one! These ladies put on an amazing show in concerts and having seen them 4 times live - I can highly recommend that if they come within 5000km from where you live GO SEE THEM LIVE - you will not regret it….BTW nice reaction - I subscribed to your channel….thanks Peace & Respect from Canada
