Vernon's bullying speech here is the most iconic of bullying tactics I remember sordidly from a few teachers against a few rebellious, otherwise bright students who rightly went against the system for misjudging otherwise keen intelligent character

$31,000 a year and home... just remember that wages have been stagnant since the 80s and $31,000 a year will never be enough to buy a house today.

@professorwiggins32907 ай бұрын
@--..-...-..-.--.... Wages have not been stagnant since the 1980s. For example, from 2000 to 2022, average US family income doubled from $39,000 to $78,000. Over that same period of time, the inflation calculator shows it took $1.70 in 2022 to equal the value of $1.00 in 2000. In other words, on average, income increase beat inflation by 30%. There are temporary ups and downs, of course, and inflation has been rising in the last few years due to government responses to the pandemic and some ridiculous fiscal and monetary policy. But still, we're still better off than we were years ago. It's tiresome seeing young people with cell phones, cars, computers, big screen TVs, places to live with climate control, plenty of fashionable clothing and so much food available that the diet industry is a multi-billion dollar enterprise cry about how tough they have it. I call total BS.

$31,000 salary in 1985 is equivalent to $90,000 in 2024. But then again, homes in Chicago were about $70,000 in 1985.

He's boasting he makes $31,000 and he works in education. Nowadays teachers make more and don't boast about their income. They are considered underpaid for the most part. My time has changed things.

You have to also take into account that this movie was made, prices weren't as inflated. If I'm not mistaken, a house would cost $50,000. So you could by a house with only two years of work with that money.

My father was a teacher from 1966 to 1997. The first year he made more than $20K was 1982. So $31K wasn't bad three years later. But let's be honest, it's extremely rare to find a teacher who's actually underpaid.
