Pod is probably my favorite album from the 90s. I remember being introduced to it on a tiny boom box by a girl named Hanna. Glorious and Fortunately Gone are two of my most favorite songs ever. I love how much faster and upbeat they sound here.

Oh wow this is awesome...when I think back to late 80s / early 90s I liked Belly, Lush, Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, dance stuff ..I don't know..Suzanne Vega. all sorts! But I was more led by Grunge in terms of anything American, it's only now reading the book 'Facing the other way' re 4AD that I'm realising what I've missed out on! I honestly thought that Cannonball was the only Breeders song worth bothering with...just goes to show how wrong I was! ... and this post is part of my new education!! Thanx!! 👍😄

How come I had never heard these demos before? Pod is one of my all-time favourite records; lost none of its strange appeal in 30 years. Thanks, great upload! Kim's unique songwriting and wonderful voice shine through, here, even without Albini's production, but I have to say that the LP sounds more coherent to me. Overcome would have felt out of place on Pod, I think, though it would have been great on Last Splash (of course, finally, we've had Bragging Party, but still...) Also, I really like what Gil Norton did with Silver. The song is superb and strange as it is, but Norton added another layer of strangeness to it, making it almost otherworldly.

Jumped straight to Silver. My reaction, simply put, was, "No, No, Yes!". Good work! Still can't figure out those extra lines though: into pieces? candy kisses? empty cases?
@maggiescarlet3 жыл бұрын
I think I know the line you're talking about, I've listened to it repeatedly with my headphones on full volume and I think it's "I resign my senses, then to kiss this, cheek I breathe in." I get the sense that the song is about leaving a town you dislike, so that line is like you're kissing a loved one goodbye then breathing in, bracing yourself to leave behind the "silver" in search of "gold". I'll probably make a cover of this soon so I'm trying to get the lyrics as close as I can!

Mind blown by this. Tanya's vocals on an equal level with Kim's is gob smacking. If this pre-dated Doolittle that means La La Love You is a steal from Fortunately Gone! What's the line-up? 100% sounds like Dave from the Muses on drums.

When I read this comment, I thought, FG sounds nothing like LLLY. Then, I went back and listened to it again, and I heard the cat call whistle. They may have borrowed that, or got inspiration from it, to make a song with the cat call more out front. Other than that, I really do believe they're completely different songs. Nice catch though.

@MrAdamNTProtester3 жыл бұрын
Overcome I think was the very very early seeds for Canonball, You always hang around 100% is going to become Divine Hammer & Fortunately Gone sounds a lot like Muses Not Too Soon... Neither Overcome nor You always hang around made it onto POD so it is almost a certainty that they were re-worked into the songs as referenced above... and altho Fortunately Gone did make it onto POD- it is difficult not to believe that this song at a min influenced Not Too Soon released a year later & prob the Throwing Muses most popular song as far as commercial success I think.

These are fantastic songs, and to my ears these demos sound much better than the album versions. The guitar parts in the album versions seem to have too little low end, so the songs sound thinner and weaker compared to the demos. I think Steve Albini is overrated as a producer. Many great albums have been recorded by him but in all cases the demos of these albums sound better than Albini's versions. At least that's how I perceive it
