I've admired Bromberg's playing for some time and here he achieves what may be the top level of contemporary acoustic bassists. He certainly has the technical side of things down well. What is lacking - to the ears of a guy who remembers LaFaro when he was alive and changing everyone's attitude toward jazz bass - is LaFaro's fiery style, full of emotion that could barely contain his ideas and passion. Bromberg, of course, follows his own path as he must.
