Emmet, you do lyrical jazz piano very well… very, very well! Bill Evans is smiling down from heaven

@Nebbiolo Italiaans wijnhuis Baarn no. they are jealous. art tatum is jealous. hiromi and emmet raised human limits again, but of course, without these big ones from the past, they wouldnt do, what they do. i mean, emmet and kyle are like ... its just magic. they are completely syncronized in a way ... damn.

Agreed, also love how he can move in and out of that feeling so fluently. From a spred voicing sound to something closer and do that seamlessly.

I think this pianist is as good as anyone around he can swing he can be lyrical inventive and most of all he plays with joy that infects his fellow musicians and the audience

I remember when Bill told Marian McPartland (on her 'Piano Jazz' radio show ) how he wrote this when he got out of the army). He played it with restraint (I thought) but so lyrically and beautifully. Then I heard him play it Sweden during the 60s with Monica Zetterlund, again quite subdued. Courtesy of You Tube! THIS version is unrestrained and beautiful, too. I hear All the joy and melancholy Bill created in your version and your talent is plain to see. A Bill Evans comes along once in a lifetime so thank you for this very different and captivating homage.

Thank you for playing Bill Evans’ Waltz for Debby 🥹. This song is precious to me for sentimental reasons. I was living abroad in Japan and I had just met my future wife precisely when I bought Cannonball Adderley’s record “Know What I Mean?” in a Japanese record shop. Despite being from Long Island, New York, I ironically discovered that NYC-recorded album in Tokyo, and thus both Cannonball and Bill are inextricably linked to my “other home” in my mind. That album came to define and represent one of the most magical periods of my life. Oh, the incredible power of association. Thank you Emmett, Russell and Kyle for a brilliant, sparkling, vibrant rendition ❤️❤️❤️

This is pure genius, and is one of my absolutely favorite versions of Bill Evan's tune Waltz For Debby! Emmet Cohen begins with a graceful implied 3/4, (swinging into 4/4 like the composer often did), making this tune "sound easy". But Waltz For Debby I find a real challenge to improvise melodically without sounding "too cyclical" - as the form has a few twists, and the chords change quality often, with reharmonized bass lines that vary each section. The modulation EC3 does from original key of F adds such a refreshing color! Emmet sounds like he is doing a triple ending, then plays an Ab pedal point in the low register as a seamless transition note - a cue bassist Russell Hall picks up on, and off they go to the warm & rich key of Db!
