More than just 'an extra song', the *"When Love Is Gone"* Scene, is arguably one of the most important scenes in the Movie, and should have never been cut. In the original she just leaves Scrooge, and when Rizo cries, it's like I get it, it's supposed to be sad, but I don't feel it. What makes that scene so moving is Micheal Cain's heartbreaking performance in the duet with his lost love, echoing the words he remembers her singing to him, but the tragic memory of losing her is too much for him to finish. It's debatebly his best piece of acting in the Film. The main reason this was cut, was it was the only song in the Movie that didn't include any Muppets, the Studio thought kids would get bored, and while that may be true, it's also arguably the emotional centerpiece of the Movie. When I was a kid I remember *"The Love We Found"* being my favourite song in the FIlm, but it's also short, and feels thrown in at random at the end, and that's because *it's a reprise of "When Love is Gone".* Years ago Scrooge Lost his Love, but by seeing the Future, he learnt to Find Love in the Present. Simply put, this Movie is a masterpiece, and this song never should been cut.
@SpikyEaredPichu9610 ай бұрын
To add to this, from what I've heard and read, the original intent was to cut the song during theatrical showings and then put it back in for home releases; but around the time they started trying to clean up/restore the picture quality (possibly around the time of blu ray?), they couldn't find the cut section and so it was lost for a time. *Then* they found it again as they prepared to restore and release it for 4K/HD quality, and so they slipped it into the showing they'd prepared for the Hensons, who were so excited that they'd found the lost song.
@candrian78 ай бұрын
@@SpikyEaredPichu96 I remember being really bloody confused when I watched it with a girlfriend on DVD and it was missing. It was on the VHS release and on any TV showing in the UK - the only format I'd ever seen - but not on the DVD.

The BEST adaptation of this story, bar-none. And I will die on that hill. What you said about this movie not holding back on any of its darker aspects really goes to show how they didn't try to insult the audience's intelligence, regardless of age.

Not only is it astounding to me that someone who worked on the film was able to find and watch my little review, but to also take the time to comment with words of praise. What really makes this movie is the reverence it has for the source material. They play it all straight despite it's cast being made up of felt. In a way the colorful nature of the Muppets allowed them to play it true to Dickens without needing to worry about alienating younger audience members. I have no qualms calling this the best adaptation of A Christmas Carol, the craft by everyone involved is palpably passionate.

I remember that i had the German Cassette Tape Version of this, and while there wasn´t any songs on this Version (probably to save Space), there actually were some wonderful Music playing in the Background. Mostly Christmas Music, but in Orchestra Style. Since then i searched for it which Orchestra was actually playing it, or even is there an Soundtrack for that. It seems they used a completely different Soundtrack for the Cassette Version. Sadly i never found anything to this after all. :(

This movie is indeed a masterpiece but I’d like to talk about the cut song “When Love is Gone”. It was mentioned passingly in the video and I haven’t seen anyone else in the comments being it up. First, the song is an absolute highlight in the soundtrack. The song is absolutely heartbreaking and it makes the whole breakup scene so much stronger. Without the song, the breakup scene might be sad on paper but it is relatively short and you don’t really have time to take it in. With the song however, that completely changes. The scene becomes the most heartbreaking and emotional scene in the entire movie by a mile and this is a movie filled with hard hitting emotional moments. The song is just so sad and when Scrooge starts singing along, holy heck, that ramps up the emotion to 11. When I watched the movie earlier today, the song absolutely broke me and I was in proper tears. It’s hard for me to describe just how powerful the song’s presence in the movie is, there is so much more to the importance of the song than I am mentioning. The fact that this movie was removed from the theatrical (it was removed because Jeffrey Katzenburg said no) was genuinely terrible. You still have a fantastic movie but without that song, the emotional core of the movie is significantly weaker. It is a pivotal song to the narrative but Disney just yeeted it out the movie. I grew up with the theatrical cut but having seen the original extended cut with the song, I can’t go back. If you have not seen the extended cut, do yourself a favour and watch it. It is thankfully more readily available now, being on Disney+. In the past, you had to track down the original VHS or Laserdisc version (I myself obtained a Laserdisc copy before the extended cut was on Disney+). But what I am ultimately saying is that “When Love Is Gone” takes this already fantastic movie and elevates it to new heights and any fan of the movie should see the full cut of the movie with the song if they haven’t already.
