Back in the early Aughts I worked at the Sears store at the east end of the mall. This mall enabled me provide a few good Christmases for my family when I was poor and living at home. Seeing it devoid of population and commerce makes me sad. While it may never again be a retail hub, I hope it gets new life as some kind of third space.

That spiral staircase cost something like $250,000 when the mall was new. I skated there in the 70’s and early 80’s. The mall was more comfortable when it became an indoor mall but it was a mid century modern beauty when I was a kid. The original toy store (can’t remember the name) was a place I begged mom to take us to from as for away as Ridgefield Washington when we lived out there briefly. The annual Christmas tree lighting was at Lloyd Center before pioneer’s square was built. Sad to see such a hub of the community fade away.

The Macys closed in January 2021. I remember visiting the food court there and quite a few of the vendors were still operating a year into the pandemic.

I gotta say we dont really need those malls anymore. Everything you need including food you can get online, even as a kid i have a greenlight youth visa card and can buy anything online within reason and how much is on my card. I may wander into BestBuy on occasion or nordstrom. I personaly and my friends have no reason to enter one of these places.
