Life on Board a U-boat: Submariners had a 75% casualty rate, the highest of all German forces during the war. Ferk that!

I don't understand how those U-boats could tell of their own demise. Maybe one in twenty but.. most would be submerged and hoping for survival. I would think most would sink with such suddeness they would not be telling anyone of their own deaths. It makes no sense. ..
