The Royal Navy was the oldest of the Royal Armies and one of the largest navies in the world.
During World War II, it possessed as many as 900 naval vessels, and during the Falklands War and other conflicts, it demonstrated a high level of foreign expeditionary capability, defeating Argentina in the process.
The Royal Navy has been reduced in size since the beginning of the 21st century due to the end of the Cold War and austerity measures, but it is still a well-balanced force with aircraft carriers, landing craft, submarines, destroyers, frigates, patrol vessels, and auxiliary vessels, and is the only one of the three British armed forces to operate nuclear weapons.
In this issue, we will explain the Royal Navy's capabilities, including the latest type of vessels currently under construction, with the latest information available in 2023.
In this first installment, we will look at destroyers and frigates as surface combatants.
