"The British Grenadiers" is a traditional marching song of British and Canadian military units whose badge of identification features a grenade, the tune of which dates from the 17th century. It is the Regimental Quick March of the Royal Artillery (since 1716), Corps of Royal Engineers (since 1787), the Honourable Artillery Company (since 1716), Grenadier Guards 'The First (later 'Grenadier') Regiment of Foot Guards' (since 1763), and the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (since 1763). It is also an authorised march of The Royal Gibraltar Regiment, The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery, The Canadian Grenadier Guards, The Royal Regiment of Canada, The Princess Louise Fusiliers, and The 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles. The standard orchestration for the military band was approved during 1762, when the Royal Artillery Band (initiated during 1557) became recognised officially, and for all other 'grenade' regiments during 1763, when the remaining unofficial bands gained official status.

Lyrics:
Some talk of Alexander, and some of Hercules
Of Hector and Lysander, and such great names as these.
But of all the world's great heroes, there's none that can compare.
With a tow, row, row, row, row, row, to the British Grenadiers.
Those heroes of antiquity ne'er saw a cannon ball,
Or knew the force of powder to slay their foes withal.
But our brave boys do know it, and banish all their fears,
With a tow, row, row, row, row, row, for the British Grenadiers.
Whene'er we are commanded to storm the palisades,
Our leaders march with fusees, and we with hand grenades.
We throw them from the glacis, about the enemies' ears.[N 1]
Sing tow, row, row, row, row, row, the British Grenadiers.
And when the siege is over, we to the town repair.
The townsmen cry, "Hurrah, boys, here comes a Grenadier!
Here come the Grenadiers, my boys, who know no doubts or fears!
Then sing tow, row, row, row, row, row, the British Grenadiers.
Then let us fill a bumper, and drink a health of those
Who carry caps and pouches, and wear the loupèd clothes.
May they and their commanders live happy all their years.
With a tow, row, row, row, row, row, for the British Grenadiers.

Britain is successful and proud because it is not closed in, it reinvents itself with every new crisis. While the rest of Europe descends into populism, we may flirt with it but our institutions are strong enough to get rid of it quickly and painlessly (bye Boris). Britain will never succumb to illiberalism. That is the difference between us my friend. We cherish our history and we are proud of our heritage but that doesn’t make us reactionaries. Good day to you, sir.

Some talk of Alexander, and some of Hercules Of Hector and Lysander, and such great names as these. But of all the world's great heroes, there's none that can compare. Whene'er we are commanded to storm the palisades, Our leaders march with fusees, and we with hand grenades. We throw them from the glacis, about the enemies' ears. Sing tow, row, row, row, row, row, the British Grenadiers. Then let us fill a bumper, and drink a health of those Who carry caps and pouches, and wear the loupèd clothes. May they and their commanders live happy all their years. With a tow, row, row, row, row, row, for the British Grenadiers.

Hmmm... they may have had a great power rivalry much of the time, but they were often allies -- in WW1, WW2 *and* the Napoleonic Wars! FYI in the 20th Century the Brits made desperate attempts in both World Wars to supply Russia with weapons and supplies. Also, their armies and navies very rarely clashed with each other, whereas the Brits and Russians each often fought the French and Germans. Compared to all that, the Crimean War is rather minor. Cheers.
@theexile6605
@theexile6605 4 жыл бұрын
@Aiden Jones Ha, people just love to give the French a hard time. However, the Napoleonic Wars were hardly a cake walk, and France ultimately had G.B., Russia, Prussia, and the Austrian Empire all arrayed against it before it went down. Cheers to you.
@theexile6605
@theexile6605 4 жыл бұрын
@WilliamTheConquerer Just so, people make too much out of 1940. In that case, France was facing the World's best army of the day fighting *with* air superiority. Even by 1944, U.S. forces were not thrilled to have to fight the Germans without complete air supremacy and relentless ground support on their side, on days with bad weather for example. Now imagine having to fight the Germans with air support in *their* favor. Cheers to you.
@theexile6605
@theexile6605 4 жыл бұрын
@WilliamTheConquerer Fair enough! I was just reacting to what a lot of people enjoy saying about the French being weak because of 1940. The French army probably peaked around the Napoleonic period as you imply, though it was a major force in Europe from the Middle Ages to WW2.
