I absolutely loved this series! Thank you for covering it. I'm not sure I agree that the third book was weaker, but I'll admit I get completely washed away by the climax of the story. I've seen so many "climactic clash between the most powerful" plots play out and the way Jemisin turned that trope on its head was masterful. Perfect. Achingly beautiful. Exactly what the story needed. I very much agree with you about author diversity though - I've spent so much time in fantasy worlds built by Gaiman, Jordan, and Martin. I had no idea how much I would get out of Jemisin's work here - so much I want to find in fantasy stories but also so much more. There's a frankness, an unflinching honesty about certain details / parts of life that I had no idea I was missing.

N. K. Jemisin rose very quickly to my top tier of authors when I found her a few years ago and by now I've read almost all of her works. The Broken Earth trilogy is great but I have a soft spot for The Inheritance trilogy, since that's the series that introduced me to her. I'm so excited, whenever Jemisin gets the spotlight she deserves!

You are an excellent salesman. I've been meaning to get to Broken Earth for ages, and now I'm figuring I'll get to start it in January. I hadn't heard that Jemisin is a psychologist, that honestly makes me look forward to it even more. I'm a sucker for good post-apocalyptic character work.

It really does feel like she pre-planned the whole thing. I'm starting book 3 today! I was so happy that book 2 was not a let down/slump that usually happens in trilogies. I love the mystery of not knowing what's going on. I've never read anything like this trilogy.

I've read this trilogy several times already and after watching your review, I want to start it up again. It's just that good! Jemisin really has a way of making you care about the characters and there's such depth and mystery that leaves you up in the late hours of the night, because you need to keep reading, LOL. I agree that it's a dark trilogy and emotionally impactful. The darker themes are beautifully written and well thought out. You can see the parallels in our own life and in a way makes you look inward, even if it's subconsciously. At least that's how I felt while reading it. I think my favorite part about this trilogy is that interweaving plot lines, and you hit the nail on the head that at the end they fit together like a missing puzzle piece. I think Jemisin was brilliant in writing from Damaya's point of view, because I felt like I was learning about this complex and traumatic world right along side her so the book truly felt like a journey and really made me invested in story. Great book and great review!

I just have two words: thank you !!! And now as I have adhd, let me tell why hahah I discovered this author and then her series of books and learned each of them won best book of the year. And the writer is a person of color who’s the first one who received those awards three times in a row or something like that. I might be mixing a few things because I’m so excited about the video. But now you gave me that final push to buy them. I’d love to have a physical copy but in Argentina is kind of impossible to buy because a book might value the same as a month worth of food. So digital will be. Again, thank you for this video!!

Now I'm currently reading the first book of A song of ice and fire, loving it and Throne of Glass from Sarah j Maas (physical copy of both) And I feel it so small compared to George Martin's writing hehe but it's an entertaining young adult book that sometimes you need just to chill and relax a bit.

😂 Oh gurl you ain't seen shit yet. Leviathan Wakes is BY FAR the weakest book in the series. The books just get better and better and better. I personally think the best books are 4, 9, 8, 7, and 3. I highly recommend the show too. One of the rare successful SFF adaptations. The show is incredible and you will fall in love with Shoreh Agdashloo, the older Iranian woman who plays Avasarala (basically "Queen" of Earth lol). She's such a great actress, and her VOICE. HER VOICE IS SO GOOD. Idk if you've watched Arcane but she voices that older cop woman in the first few episodes. That's another show worth checking out. It's a successful fantasy adaptations and the animation style is incredible, not to mention the insane characterization and killer soundtrack.

@@lorimariebee Hope you enjoy the rest of the books! It really is some of the best SciFi of the 21st century. I'd say the only competition The Expanse has is Adrian Tchaikovsky's Children of Time books. Children of Time is incredible and feels so original and imaginative. A nano virus is created that basically allows memories/skills to be encoded and shared biologically, effectively speeding up evolution. There's this plan to terraform planets and perform The Exultation of Beasts by releasing this virus into monkeys and monitoring their evolution, only a terrorist attack happens, the monkeys die and the virus gets released into the insect population on the planet below. The story follows successive generations of increasingly intelligent spiders and it's sooo fucking cool. Then there's a human plot too about human refugees fleeing earth in search of a new planet centuries later and stumbling on this spider planet and it becomes a first contact story. It's well worth reading. I'd say it's the best individual SF book of the last 20yrs (better than any single Expanse book), but I think Expanse as a SERIES beats out Children of Time. You can watch/read Expanse at the same time, especially cause the show sadly ends on book 6. I personally watched the first 2 seasons, then read books 3-5. Then around when book 6 to came out I went back and read 1-6. I don't think watching the show hinders any enjoyment of the books at all. Also, I feel you, cause Arcane took me about 2-3 tries to get past episode 2, but then once I did I was hooked. The first act is first-acting, but when you get into it the show really takes off from there.

I honestly have found this book series (still first book) a little confusing. Initially I thought it was a medieval world, but then they talk about metal pipes (plumbing) and it confused me, later on they talk about modern day drugs to deal with illness and my brain felt blind sided. Did anyone else struggle to place the world in their mind from the writing? I'm wondering if I need to start this book series again to properly plant myself as everyone loves it, especially the world building. I feel like I must have messed up and missed something.

By far one of my fav series. I think my top 3 fantasy series are Malazan, Broken Earth and Baru. Speaking of which, can you read/talk about The Traitor/Monster/Tyrant Baru Cormorant books? Seth Dickinson deserves sooo much more recognition. I think his technical ability and his deep themes and character work is on par with Erikson, they're just stylistically different. Baru Cormorant is by far one of the best antihero stories I've ever read and it's wild this man hasn't won a Hugo award yet, especially considering Hugo winner Arkady Martine won for her book A Memory Called Empire which (no shade, I love the book) is literally just like stole everything from The Traitor Baru Cormorant and rewrote it as a SciFi story. Reading them back to back the similarities are uncanny. If you like one you'll like the other. It'd be nice to see more booktubers talking about Baru. I've raved about the series on my channel but it doesn't have that many views.

Haha I'm the same! I've got one book on my to-read shelf that's been there 3 years. It taunts me every day. Yeah sometimes awards get giving late. I think its a watchmojo list, about actors who got the award for one film but earned it for a previous. Like Leonardo Dicaprio won his for the revenant, but earned it in wolf of wall street. Stone Sky definitely deserved the nebula award for the sum of the parts of the trilogy.
