I’m about to read The Obelisk Gate over a year after completing The Fifth Season so I really needed a recap! I didn’t expect to find such a thorough overview. Thank you so much for doing this :)

Some incorrect information here. The “fifth seasons” that are basically extinction events don’t happen every couple of years apart, but decades to hundreds of years apart, and can also last for a few years to decades or hundreds of years before the earth naturally repairs itself (I.e the ash or whatever is cleared from the atmosphere so the sun can get through and crops can grow again). Although Orogenes can sess how long each season will last to an extent, no one knows exactly when they will occur or how long they will last. The appendix at the end of the book lists the seasons, when they occurred, what set them off etc.

This was extremely helpful. I read this on audiobook so some parts that aren't explained felt like maybe I missed them but your explanation was awesome.

Thank you so much for this video! I've just read the book and was left with so many questions, but after seeing this video I realised that I'm not suposed to have all the answers even after the book is finished. I'm from Sweden and I've read the book in english so it took me quite a while to get through the book but I really enjoyed it and I learnd a lot, especially since this is not an easy read. Thanks again for your amazing video! You did an amzing job explaining this messy story!

Fantastic breakdown and I really appreciated how you split up the the different story arcs and seperated them. I was confused reading and this makes everything make so much more sense.

I usually listen to audio books while working and I missed some of these details/events you talked about. The chart was great and helped me follow along as well. Thanks for the recap! Now onto book 2!

I am not great at reading, and I chose this book to try and get back into it. It had a thing to do with volcanoes. I love volcanoes so this hooked me really quickly. I just wanted to thank you for this. As someone who is trying to get into reading, this book was really, REALLY complicated to keep up with until I was closer to the end. This was a great way to recap without me having to re-read the entire book.

This is helpful because I started listening to the 1st book but couldn't finish due to the dirty content clashing with my sensitivity and views towards romance, but still wanted to know how the story ends. Thanks a bunch

I read the second book as well. The third one is still on the pile. The genre of fantasy really comes in bursts for me. At the moment I'm reading very different things. But as soon as I'm back to fantasy, I'll probably pick up the third novel immediately :)

Didn't Octavia Butler win the HUGO award ?
@Akira0ws
@Akira0ws 4 жыл бұрын
I think Butler won the Hugo for the best short story (Speech Sounds) and for Novelettes (Bloodchild; thought about making a video on Bloodchild, actually!) but not in the category of 'best novel'. But yeah, this doesn't decrease my tremendous respect for Butler, of course. It just highlights the spectacular slam of Jemisin to win the novel category 3 times in a row.
