The idea that we as readers won’t get closure or a real answer as to this crime is just masterful. How do we do good without God? More than that- how might we decide what kind of bad is done and how without all the information? Amazing

Poetic justice + self sacrifice. Fjodor had raped Smerdyakov's mother, and in at least one sense got what he deserved, and Dmitri had already accepted universal guilt and needed exile and punishment to be saved. It's really the same ending as in C&P, except that Dmitri hadn't murdered anyone with an ax as far as we know, and Gruschenka wasn't officially a prostitute. But that wasn't the point. Siberia = Heaven. Where the sinners go to be redeemed. Correctly pinning the crime on Smerdyakov would lead to no redemption for anyone since he was already dead. It was the only possible ending if you read Dostoyevski's biography and House of the Dead. He was changed, humbled and in a way saved by Siberia himself. It's just a metaphor, but also not at all.
@jacquiecotillard9699
@jacquiecotillard9699 6 күн бұрын
@ thank you for such a thorough reflection. Is there a biography that you recommend? Might be looking at my own little Siberia soon.
@didgruntleddansnyderfan
@didgruntleddansnyderfan 6 күн бұрын
@ I just meant his general biography. I've read a couple of actual biographies on Dostoyevski, but I can never remember names etc. But the general arc, so to speak, of the bogus execution he was subjected to and then a ten year exile in Siberia is even in his wikipedia entry. And he says everything better in House of the Dead himself than any biographer could anyway. Just read that. Like Dmitri he wasn't really guilty of what they accused him of either, but that didn't mean he was innocent. Karamazov is an allegory where the brothers are parts of the despicable whole that was Fyodor Karamazov. But it is also, as usual, a bit of an autobiography. The murder itself was clearly based on what happened to Dostoyevski's father, who was rumored to have been murdered by his serfs when FD was young. And he is also Dostoyevski himself, and clearly a self-insert he therefore deliberately makes sure to drag through the mud more than anyone else. And probably his biggest sin; the rape of Stinking Lizaveta that spawned Smerdyakov, ended up murdering him in the end. Of course the troubled and incomplete fragments remain, and I consider that the most important part of the book. Their imbalance makes them unhappy; one by reason, one by blind faith and superstition and the third by love, intemperance and passion. As despicable as he was, they must return to the balance of their father, who for all his foibles was relatively content. Social commentary, political commentary, psychological commentary, moralist commentary; it's all of that and more. Anyway, I can feel ramblings are afoot. You really shouldn't provoke me into talking about Dostoyevski or I might never stop. I'll leave it here.

This book goes on and on and on about trivia that does not advance the plot one inch. Without audio books, I could have never made it through this thing. Watching movie versions helps too. I respect people who write movie scripts that are based on these books. They know what to cut. A movie clip shows in a few seconds what took FD several pages to describe in print. Sometimes, I think the reason this and other books are so long is that people in the 1800's had no radio, no television, and no internet. Big long books gave those people back then something to use up their leisure times. I still regret I did not go to St. John's, but this book and a few others on its required reading list have been an extended pain. Very good Book, excellent reading, but I have to give up here. Happens to me often with masterpieces of literature that are as heavy as a millstone. I confess to be a hopeless ignorant that preferes short novels where the author has to compress his ideas & thinking into a limited number of pages. It feels more concentrated to me, like somebody who gives a short report of his experiences, while long stories always give me the impression of somebody who talks on & on & on, like a whino not caring about his audience. "The dream of a ridiculous man" is my favourite story of Dostojevsky.

I don't know. I feel like a longer story like this gives the characters room and time to breathe. And I get your point, but a lot of Karamazov is just noise. Because the people Dostoyevski observed around him were noisy, and he just described them. Most of what they do and nearly all of what they say is stupid, vain and comes to nothing, and I believe that is the point.
