During the Second World War and as Hitler rose to power inside of Germany, there were many groups of resistance who tried to defy Hitler's Nazi Regime. Some of the most famous resistance elements were the White Rose, who distributed anti-Nazi propaganda, however members Sophie Scholl and Hans Scholl were dealt with brutally being executed. One other youth movement that defied the Nazi ideals and the Hitler Youth were the Edelweiss Pirates. These were a group of teenagers who wore whatever clothes they liked, met up and went camping and listened to banned music. They were a culture who hated the Hitler Youth, and they attacked them a number of times.
The Edelweiss Pirates were irritating to the Nazis, and in Cologne one significant group of the Pirates rose up. These were known as the Ehrenfeld Group, and they followed a man who escaped from a concentration camp. Together they stockpiled weapons, and planned to blow up the Gestapo HQ in Cologne, but their plan was foiled. Heinrich Himmler announced a crackdown on the group, and a number of the Edelweiss Pirates were arrested and tortured by the Gestapo for weeks. However after they gave no information up, they were then without trial brought to Cologne's Ehrenfeld Train Station to be executed.
A huge gallows had been created outside the train station, and 13 young men and teenagers were brought to the gallows to be executed. 3 of those executed that day were just 16 years old, and all together they were executed in front of a huge crowd on the huge structure. Today memorials mark the site of the executions, and the street is named after Barthel Schink, one of the youngest to die that day.

I knew a guy in Cologne, who's father, a Communist and trade unionist, was loosely connected with the Edelweisspiraten (the father at this time was too old to be a member of this group, but he grew up and lived in the same working class district of Ehrenfeld. He was imprisoned at one point by the Nazis (and tortured, they broke his hands and ended a career as a gifted amateur pianist), but as he was a trained glazier, he and other skilled prisoners were used to rebuild houses of high ranking Nazis after bomb raids. He managed to escape during one of the bomb raids while at work and was hidden in the Ehrenfeld community until the end of WW2). Post WW2 the Edelweisspirates were considered ordinar criminals ddue to their Gestapo records and because they were working class and not affiliated with any of the "respectable" political parties. The were loosely leftwing, but not connected to any political party.

Every time I came back from Belgium in the seventies I came off at Ehrenfeld Station . Never anyone told me about the murders that took place there. Guess the inhabitants of Koln weren’t too proud. I was born close by in 1961 in a military hospital….as the son of an officer of the ‘occupying’ Belgian corps .

I became aware of the Edelweiss Pirates when I found a small, black hard-cover book entitled _The Edelweiss Pirates_ at a university library in 1994. I may be wrong about some things; it's been twenty-seven years since I read the book. I think it had been written by one or more Germans and then translated to English with additional information from one or more USA academics. There were a few pages of photographs in the centre of the book. It was a fascinating book because it presented many opinions contrary to popular belief. For instance, I think the book stated: ① The Hitler Youth and the League of German Girls failed to achieve their goals of enrollment because ② Many young people didn't like or weren't interested in the Hitler Youth and the League of German Girls for many reasons, one of which was typical youth recalcitrance, and another was ③ Distrust of the Hitler Youth and the League of German Girls by parents, especially religious parents for the League of German Girls, because both groups did meet and cause unwanted pregnancies and abortions. ④ The "strength through joy" organisation was used as a running joke about the sex problems between the Hitler Youth and the League of German Girls. ⑤ There were many groups like the Edelweiss Pirates. ⑥ At some time during the war, tens of thousands of men identified, captured, recorded, imprisoned, and executed groups like the Edelweiss Pirates. High ranking Nazis became annoyed because it was a significant drain on manpower and resources that couldn't be used in the war effort.

Two significant Catholic leaders against Nazism were Cologne Archbishop Bishop Josef Frings and Bishop August Clemens Von Galen. Regarding Frings, “His consecration was used as a demonstration of Catholic self-assertion. In his sermons, he repeatedly spoke in support of persecuted peoples and against state repression. In March 1944, Frings attacked arbitrary arrests, racial persecution and forced divorces. That autumn, he protested to the Gestapo against the deportations of Jews from Cologne and surrounds.”

Well, my grandfather said in the 1940, "o my goodness, when I hear him". He ment the one from Braunau who was broadcasted because of a speech in the radio. That was enough. Well my grandfather was the 3rd boy in a family and normally it was allowed that he had not to take part on the war. (farmer family); He denid the one and his regime absolutly. No chance. 8 weeks later he was "allowed" to take part in the war for the SS for supplies. He was 23 years old in these times. In 1945 the war was over but not for him. He was "invited" visiting Dachau concentration camp over 11 month. He survived really luckily the war and the camp. His sister and his brother were able to support him with food. They had to drive therefore with the bicycle over 200 km.(railways and public traffic damaged) After his release in 1946 he had 44 kg and was an ill man. Sorry for my bad english. I tell the story the first time and I don`t know why. This is in my opinion a total normal story in these times in germany. I hope that we always can reach peace and liberty. Greetings from Bavaria

Although I haven't seen anyone pay with their life, it seems the German government is up to its old tricks. The most recent I've seen being the arrest of a lady for insulting a police officer. Seven, yes 7 police officers then arrested her for the crime of insulting a police officer who was attempting to arrest her because she wasn't wearing a mask. I do not care anyone's politics, those heavy handed Gestapo tactics are alive and well in Germany today. It is truly disgusting. First, that so many have bought into the BS. Then for accepting the mistreatment of their civilian population by their fascist, over paid and cowardice police forces. They are no different than their precursor Brown Shirts. They should be ashamed of themselves for allowing their police to act in such a manor. Germany, the bulk of the world's countries and yes, even several states in the good ole' USA have all adopted these same tactics. And what's worse are all the tens of millions of people who actually believe 2 things. 1. That their rights will be restored once Covid is all done with and 2. that Covid will actually end. People, once you surrender your rights to the government, for whatever reason, you are not getting them back. At least not without a lot of bloodshed. Even the worst states and cities in the US pale in comparison to the rest of the world. The only way this all stops is when the people who are in favor of mask mandates and forced injections of poison finally start losing rights that THEY care about. The problem there is, they don't have the stomach to do what is required to end their oppression. They are cowards.

It has long been standard to proclaim that the German army, or "Wehrmacht," was not like other institutions under the Third Reich. This myth, known to some as the "clean hands" version of the Wehrmacht's history, contends that the German army fought a relatively fair fight during World War II and avoided the atrocity-laden conduct associated with more notorious units like the Schutzstaffel, or "SS."
@leftsidem5030

@@1ambrose100 the long history of anti-Semitism in the German armed forces and the atrocities committed by the Wehrmacht during the course of World War II. Wette does away with the idea that as "professional" soldiers, Wehrmacht officers and enlisted men were immune to the propaganda of race hatred spread by the Nazi government; instead it shows how long-standing anti-Semitic tendencies within the army were stoked and inflamed by this propaganda, leading to some of the worst atrocities of the war. It goes on to explain how the "clean hands" myth came to be the standard narrative of the Wehrmacht's contact during the war, fostered by ex-officers looking to absolve themselves of guilt and an international community more concerned with the management of Cold War political perception than any engagement with historical truth.

@TheJudgmentCat; You are exactly right. Not all Germans were Nazis, and not all who joined the Nazi party were evil. Oskar Schindler, who had joined the Nazi party in the 1930s, became troubled when he learned that hundreds of thousands of Jews were being murdered in death camps. He aimed to rescue as many of the Jews as possible from this awful fate, all the time managing too save more than 1000 of his Jewish workers from being sent to Auschwitz and other death camps, or should I say, "murder factories", which they turned out to be.

It just shows that within the Nazi dictatorship free minds were still active .We stayed the night in Colditz Castle (schloss)..Eggers the commandant was a decent fair play German .Never cruel and always played by the rules .It tells you there was a big underlying feeling amongst level headed people that Hitlers mad adventure was doomed.

There was a lot of passive resistance in Cologne too. Nazi top dogs were NOT welcomed with open arms. The population called them the Goldfasan (gold pheasant for their brown shirts and ample gold medals and epaulets.) They got so much lip when they did turn up, that by 1944 they just did not come at all. Maybe getting bombed day and night does that to you but that attitude was already present much earlier. It probably has to do with the general sense of humour and directness that is so unlike much of German culture in that time.

There's a really good young adult novel by Dirk Reinhardt that came out last year, called the Edelweiss Pirates. Highly recommended for a deeper understanding of what they faced. It tells their story and captures some of the ways they were steadily radicalised by various forms of Nazi oppression.

I thought I knew about most of the resistance groups that grew up around Hitlers brutal regime.....I’d never heard of this group of young Germans who took this incredibly brave stance against the brutal dictator, when the easy way would have been to do what their peers did, these kids were unsung heroes. What a tragic end and waste of brave young lives, who died to satisfy the bloodlust of the maniacal nazi dictator. Respect to you all.

Hi great Video as always, But as a remark, the kittelbachpiraten have not been part of the resistance or the Edelweiß movement. They have been a far right organisation and although they have been formally Vorbidden in 33, most of their members joined the hj, ss, sa in high ranking positions.

These youngsters played a dangerous game and paid the harshest penalty for their treasonous activities but their story should be regarded unemotionally in the cool light of reason. Any actions against the state, especially in wartime, are viewed most unfavourably in all civilized nations but particularly in oligarchies such as the Third Reich. The teenagers were 1940's versions of "rebels without a clue" who clearly were enjoying a 'lark' by stealing, dealing in the black market and murder while simultaneously tweaking Hitler's nose. They threw away their own lives and accomplished precisely nothing. Their undeniable courage was exceeded only by their foolishness.

@jacksonreilly3441
@jacksonreilly3441 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrBagpipes Actually, I'm unaware of any "moaning" on my part. In fact, I specifically stated that the subject be regarded unemotionally. Your point with reference to resistance movements is mere deflection, or in other words a "non sequitur". The Edelweiss Pirates were Germans who committed crimes in Germany, not partisans sabotaging Wehrmacht operations in zones of occupation. Also, the bulk of partisan gangs were composed of Kozis but if you're OK with supporting the aims of those who gave us the gulags, the KGB, the massacre of millions and the Cold War, then you have to live with that.
@MrBagpipes
@MrBagpipes 2 жыл бұрын
@@jacksonreilly3441 I haven't come close to deflection,I'm trying to help you understand that your moaning about Germans breaking Nazi laws if consistently applied would put almost every resistance movement in Europe into the same category as Germans who opposed Nazism i.e. treacherous lawbreakers. I absolutely knew you'd badly try to turn this into some left versus right thing. So predictable and boring. Bit cringey though that you can somehow equate Soviet citizens resisting an invasion with support for Stalin and the Gulags. May be you'd rather they'd have behaved like the the Eastern Europeans who staffed the extermination camps. During WW2 the resistance in France,Italy,Greece,Croatia, Slovakia,Holland,Belgium and Norway were deemed by their own governments to be traitors breaking the laws of their own countries. That's exactly the same as the excuse you're using to kid on Germans who opposed the Nazis were somehow in the wrong. Jeez next thing you'll be complaining about how the Germans who hid Jews were breaking their own country's laws and being treacherous. Because that is exactly how the Nazi state viewed them. It's cute though that you think all any resistance movement done was sabotage Wehrmacht operations. Bless.

What would the Nazis do to someone resisting against them with equal brutality back at them? Supposed they tried to hang someone and they scissor leg locked the Guard or Executioner and broke his neck with their legs or went Kamikaze taking some down with them? Would they just shoot him on the spot and then hang their dead body anyway? Suppose they forcefully refused to step up on the beam? They didn't have Tasers or tear gas back then so what would be done with criminals who resisted in such ways back in these time periods or even in the States?
