During World War 2, there were many different armies that utilised the spies to get the upper hand over their enemies. But Hitler ordered Otto Skorzeny to create a unit which was supposed to disrupt and cause chaos amongst the US Army. This operation was known as 'Operation Greif,' and it was a group of German soldiers who wore American and British uniforms to confuse and cause problems for the Allies. It worked to some extent, with a US unit being told to go a different direction, but many members of the group were arrested.
As they wore enemy uniforms, they were treated in the same way as spies, and a number of German soldiers were sentenced to death for their involvement in the sabotage operation. These executions were carried out by the American army and involved a firing squad. The condemned were lead out to a stake and secured to it before their execution took place.

I never knew of this until I watched the movie Battle of the Bulge.. I didn't know of the ones leading the unit and I remember in the movie hearing the Panzerlied sung by a group of soldiers and I don't know if it was true or not but they would have been killed by their own because they were seen as traitors.. I can't say that's how it really happened but I love learning about history so much especially when it's done by people who take pride in their work.. I watch so many different channels now and this is my second favorite channel, the other one is Mark Felton Productions

Skorzeny beat _all_ war crimes charges, the third set of charges _in absentia,_ after he escaped. He actually told them previously, that he would leave if charged again. The next morning, they found his cell empty! Skorzeny litigated his own case, as well as those of several others, who elected him to the position. Though this would make him the single most prominent figure in the Nuremberg Trials, it is worth noting that he has never been included in any major movie or documentary about Nuremberg.

@@AkakaDomenjer - Awww! Is that what you read on Wikipedia? Wrong. He escaped, and despite being acquitted for a third time _in absentia,_ remained a fugitive the rest of his life, usually with Franco's Spain as his new base of operations. It always amazes me, how the same idiots that tell you to "learn history" in the comments, can never provide any facts or specifics of their own. You didn't learn history; you're trying to rewrite it. Typical Kraut! 😃

They were discovered after being "suspicious", then being carefully interrogated and searched. Many were found with well hidden means of identification on them that they would present if caught by other German soldiers to let them know who they were.

The River Moyzer - ? Do you mean the Meuse? It's a French river, pronounced in French. Anyway - these spies and saboteurs did great damage to the US, but even so their punishment was barbaric. Dostler was a different matter - his own men questioned his order, but he insisted on it; I believe it had come originally from Albert Kesselring.

The Heidelberg scar was from the upper class who wanted these as evidence of their fencing experience. Not sure why they considered it a badge of honor. Admiral McRaven wrote a book called “Spec Ops”. He developed a special operations model and one of the case studies was Skorzeny’s capture of Mussolini. It’s an interesting read. Skorzeny would be a special forces person in today’s military.

Skorzeny, their commanding officer, was never punished for given his men the orders to infiltrate in enemy clothes and means of transport.. On the contrary: at his trial, he was acquitted with the help of a British higher officer who testified that the allies had done exactly the same thing now and then. They realised they could use him... Skorzeny happily lived on to present his services to various countries, even Israel. A hardened soldier during the war, a very shadowy figure after - a genuine mercenary.

After the war there were few executions by the Americans and British. Even for the war criminals. Even of those sentenced to die. Most were commuted to prison time. Then released early. IIRC Skorzeny made it to Spain and was employed for a time by the Franco government. Suppoedly at one point Skorzeny worked for Israel. With the cold war and the need to keep west Germany on the western side. I doubt the Soviets or the French were as lenient to those captured in their occupation zones

You'll notice that the soldiers carrying out the firing squad executions had white stripes around their battle heets. This was a Military Police detachment. How did they get the American Military Police uniforms? They came across some Military Policemen and bailed them up at gunpoint. They were then forced to strip out of their uniforms and were then shot dead. This is how the Krauts acquired the American Military Police uniforms. While posing as American M.P.'s, they directed other American troops into ambushes which resulted in a great loss of life. When the Americans became wise to what was going on and back'tracked to where the misinformation had come from and who gave it to them, they returned and captured the Germans posing as American Military Police. As a form of revenge against the Krauts, the Military Police detachment were given the honour of carrying out the firing squad executions to avenge the deaths of their fallen comrades. There were other firing squad executions of German soldiers for wraring civilian clothing and posing as civilians by American troops. Why? Because the former owners of the civilan clothing had been murdered after having been forced to strip. This is how these bastards got their little red wagons fixed.
