This is 100% accurate and is why I moved. I moved to Chicago. Young people can’t afford to move to NYC anymore and that’s killing the city’s vibrancy. The only thing that might save NYC is if the cat lady, Sex In The City, girl boss thing ends.

You cannot live in Manhattan in a decent size 1 bedroom apartment without spending over 3,000 a month on rent. My friend is a nurse, makes 100k a year but needs a roommate to pay rent to have her own bedroom. She pays almost 2500 a month.

I grew up in Brooklyn. One of my childhood memories is going to a dinner at night to have breakfast. Didn't mater the time they were always open. Dont live there anymore but its sad to hear the state of everything.

I felt like during and after the shutdown is when diners were affected to the point that they're usually close around 12am

Completely agree. It's all marketing. And it was just as true a decade ago when I last visited.

From my perspective, NYC in 2024 feels like the same person repeated endlessly. They’re easy to spot-same white sneakers, same light blue denim. Nearly everyone sports a shiny Moncler jacket or Canada Goose. Conversations often sound like they’re straight out of Clueless, with a Cher-like cadence or a valley-esque accent. Authenticity seems in short supply these days. I love my place, but I find I stay home a lot---there really isn't much to see.

I wonder the reason behind the growing trend you mentioned is because the effects of social media and tech. I feel like people are starting to look for that authenticity we once had and demanding it.

If you're not a millionaire don't even bother. Too high taxes, Too high cost of living, no real benefits.

Even making a 6 figure salary isn't enough to guarantee any level of comfort in NYC, people with high paying tech and corporate jobs driving Uber and starting OF pages just to get by is a bad sign. Cops are better paid than most civilians because they have to be in order to afford COL but but not sure about other public servants like teachers, govt employees, etc.
