Akadama is a fantastic soil but don't go by that aquarium coop video, The German guy is an importer of shrimp, he keeps his shrimp on old akadma thats lost its buffering capacity, that's the reason he has no baby shrimp in his tanks. I don't like talking about people negatively but I feel I have to with that video. Ps MD Ive used Akadama for about a decade so I am surprised you didn't notice my orange Akadama substrates before. 😂

@Marks Shrimp Tanks and @MD Fish Tanks if you haven't tried it before, brightwell aquasoil is another good option for buffering soil for caridina shrimp. Grant Eder of The Garden of Eder as well as Flip Aquatics use brightwell and both are considered master shrimp breeders here in the US (in my opinion anyway). Several other USA shrimp breeders use brightwell and it seems to work very well and not need to be refreshed as often as Akadama. Good luck on your shrimp tank this go round 🙂!

I hope it works for you but in my experience this stone will raise the gH and kH, the raised kH will in turn raise your pH as soon as the buffering capacity of the soil has been reached. I would recommend to use lava rock or dragonstone as they release no minerals. I prefer to use no rocks in my caridina tanks though. Shrimp Mania and Shrimp time are great channels if you want to know a bit more about the caridina's. Good luck and keep it up! Love your style of videos from camera work to your explanations!

Nice video. Rock choice not so. Caridina ideally need a kh of 0-1 and a gh of 4-6 in the main, different caridina types vary slightly on parameters but the rules are similar. An inert rock is needed so as not to alter the hardness of the water, especially in a small tank. Dragon or lava stone would be ideal.

I have a 82L aquarium (about 4yo) with some neon tetras and two gouramis. Only plants are cryptocoryne and anubias (but in significant quantity). As a substrate I used Amazonia soil, and as a hardscape I used some redwood branches and a big piece of lava that I bring from Iceland. It's very low tech, and low maintaince tank - I'm doing water changes maybe once a year. Three years ago I added 15 red cherry shrimps - they absolutely thriving, the population is absurdly big. Once a month I give away about 200 pieces to anyone who wants them, because there are really too much for my tank. I never tested the water in here and I'm using regular tap water. I don't know how it works, but after 4 years the plants are beautiful, the fish are happy, shrimps are doing great even if I put almost no effort into maintaining this tank. I'm just lucky I guess ;)

@@MDFishTanks did you get the Salty Shrimp for Caridina? After I got sick with covid in 2020 and lost 2 colonies, I caved and switched to a more environmentally friendly version of RO water (sand, activated charcoal, and 2 membranes do the work with zero waste/effluent water). I learned setting up with RO and appropriate mineral re-supplementation, plus appropriate hardscape and plants (lava rock and wood for caridina, wider variety of rocks for neo & Palaemonetes paludosus) and waiting 6 to 8 weeks to establish a healthy supply of microflora and microfauna food sources (algae really is my friend... in balance) and I only have to top off with properly re-mineralized water. Made my life so much easier, and gave me more time to enjoy my tanks.😁 Only my shrimp get such selectively treated water😂

All my shrimp (caridina, neocaridina, and Palaemonetes paludosus) and snails appreciate blanched vegetables every other day. Guppysnail taught me that healthy beneficial bacteria colonies prevent any ammonia buildup from the veggies, so I throw veggies on a bamboo skewer and change them out every 48 hours. Baby brine and other microfauna & microflora guarantee successful breeding as long as I keep the water healthy, healthy plants, and right mineral balance.

Some folks asking if a Betta would work on this tank gonna say likely no. If the Betta was there for a while then sure, shrimp can sneak in and hide and the Betta isn't expecting new additions to an existing home. But adding both around the same time is not ideal for the shrimp since the Betta will likely try snacking on em and the shrimp will already be agitated for any number of shrimpy reasons.

I know some people use unscented cat litter as their bonsai soil mix as some of them are akadama. Its supposed to be a cheap way to source akadama as bags labled as bonsai soil can be extortionate. Personally I tried to find some locally but most didn't list the ingredients and any that did listed other ingredients like wood fibres, so I don't think that would work for aquarium soil.

I'm so jealous that you can get all that bucephalandra! I can't get my hands on any of it in my neck of the woods at the moment 😐. Beautiful scape.

Great video. And stunning aquascape as always MD. I love the multi-colored shrimp. They're my favorite. And now I know what it takes to have a successful tank of them. My PH is naturally low. 6.8-6.4. I'm usually trying to bring it up with cuddle bones. LOL. This would be the exact opposite for me. Jahah-!!n!!!n+ Thanks again for a wonderful video.

That stone will raise KH which will not be good for the shrimp, going to be an expensive mistake using that😢. Keep on eye on GH and KH with regular testing or better still RO water.
