I was always proud to wear my bugler patch as a scout but i had to lug my band trumpet in it's case on each hike and trip. As an adult scoutmaster I found an old us regulation bugle. With none of the boys wanting to take up bugling I blasted those kids out of bed every morning, did morning and evening flag ceremonies, and played at veterans events. Time for my own worse shape bugle to begin the restoration by my own hand. Thanks Wes.

What a beautiful tribute! Who would think that a crumbled piece of brass could mean so much to someone! No longer crumbled and dented, and seeing that it has been cared for and restored, is loved and given a place of honor, should make us all proud to be Americans! Happy Independence Day!

Loved the bugle, In the 70's I rarely heard one while in service but I had participated in Revile as well as retreat at the end of the day but only recorded. I remember hearing taps for the first time several years after service but had played it several times on my baritone bugle. in high school with the bugle corps. I am glad you were able to rescue this instrument. I have a very soft spot in my heart for the honors, this bugle undoubtedly performed for at least 50 or more years

It certainly makes it more interesting when an instrument has meaning behind it. I am looking at an old bugle that I have. That particular horn is just one I picked up at a garage sale. However it reminds me of years ago when I used an old trumpet to fill in for a bugle. Every year, in Salt Lake City, there is a huge parade on the 24th of July. It is to commemorate the pioneers entering the valley of the Great Salt Lake in 1847. One year I had the honor of leading that parade as a member of the Mormon Battalion Drum and Bugle Corp. The Mormon Battalion holds the distinction of performing the longest march in US military history. The were enlisted in Nauvoo Illinois to fight in the Mexican American War. They marched from Nauvoo to San Diego, California, about 2000 miles. They left Nauvoo and headed for the war zone. Fortunately by the time they got to the war zone, the war was over. So they continued West, eventually reaching San Diego. I have ancestors who had relatives in that Battalion. So I was an honor to lead the parade, even though I used a trumpet as a bugle. Thanks for posting this video.

THANKS FOR THE RESTORATION and for the amazing TJ story. As an old craftsman to another, if you'll get a STAINLESS-STEEL ball bearing, that is the size of the inside of your tubing, and put a form on the outside of the tubing, you can put smaller ball bearings in behind the SIZING ball bearing and squeeze or tap them thru till they roll smooth. The smaller balls apply constant force to the main ball. Use a good grade of oil during the procedure. It makes little difference how far it goes, as long as you don't have a pocket, like a valve, for the ball to get hung in. I hope this helps. Bill, from Tn. 🇺🇸

So glad that I stumbled onto this video. After listening to Wes for a couple minutes, I jumped on board and clicked the Subscribed button. Ya, I c-l-i-c-k-e-d it ... I like watching stuff like this on my laptop ... not on some stupid little device called a "phone" ... But don't get me wrong. I do believe that the "phone" will secure a place for itself in the daily lives of (the rather minuscule percentage of) human-beings who spend a few minutes each day practicing the fine art of oral communication. Wes, I'll give you a call in a few minutes! :-)

I have set up a length of plumbing snake, which is what I think you have there with a motorcycle brake cable with the lead nub on the end. Thread the cable through the dent ball and then through the cable so you can push the dent ball with the snake and retrieve it with the cable.

Very nice. I have a Rexcraft regulation bugle that I restored that was in almost as bad a shape as that one. I soaked it in cleaning vinegar for a while to loosen-up the corrosion and the solder. You have to be careful not to overdo that though.

Back in the day I played from my high school days through my time in the navy and for some years after that for many military funerals. Some were in temps of 100 degrees and others in snow and ice with temps well below freezing, I wish I had never stopped. My youngest son has played from high school through his time in the navy and until recently ( job does not allow time right now) as he eases in to his fifties. We have both felt total outrage that the military some years ago decided it was too expensive to provide full military (with taps) services for our veterans. My son has gone so far as to have discussed this with our and other members of congress who all said "we feel as you do and we are going to do something about it" (many of them X military.) Well nothing has been done to date. Bye the way, if you want military "Taps" for a loved one, it will be played by a recording inserted in a horn....

The coefficient of thermal expansion of nickel silver is about 20% lower than that of brass. If a nickel-silver slide is stuck inside a brass tube, heat will loosen them up.
