We visited the DW Factory in Oxnard, California for a start-to-finish look at the making of the new DW Collector’s Series Limited Edition Pure Tasmanian Timber Kit, guided by VP of DW Drums John Good and demoed by renowned drummer Virgil Donati.
Learn more: bit.ly/DWTasGCyt
About this kit:
Crafted at the California Custom Shop from plied Australian blackwood shells, the DW Collector’s Series Limited Edition Pure Tasmanian Timber Kit features a stunning black sassafras exotic finish.
The signed and numbered sets are complemented by a quick Candy Black-to-Natural Lacquer burst and black nickel hardware. Blackwood offers a punchy, warm tonality that is evident in larger drum diameters and their low-end frequencies. Offered in preconfigured 6-piece sets and à la carte snare drums.

You don’t have to buy DW exotic wood to sound great. A used budget kit for less than $700 can sound legitimate and in a blind test on a recording, it can sound just as good mixed in with music.

I've never been a big DW fan, I have played several DW kits and found they all sound good but never played one that really tore my head off, particularly the kicks. BUT after watching the way they work I am incredibly impressed with their constant innovation and the work John has done to better understand woods and grain orientation

beautiful drums. I have 4 kits, and one is a DW Collectors pure maple. My others are a Starclassic Maple, Yamaha Absolute Hybrid, and Reference Pure. Personally, I like the DW the best- it mics up well, projects, very good sustain to them, and it records really well. I think all the negative comments are people who just have some agenda against DW, or can not afford them. Yes, the other drums sound good- and if all you can afford is a $1500 kit, fine- some good options there. But there is a difference- coming from someone who's played them all with 36 years experience- DW is good as it gets. If you are getting dull sounds, you are not tuning them to their potential, or using good heads. The comments about who's building them are ignorant and non relevant to the quality of them. Nice job to all the employees working there-

job Rothberg ok well I respectfully disagree, I have recorded and have been a gigging drummer for 30 years, and DW sounds as good as any.. and I get them so often on backline.. guess so many of us must have it wrong. Any how, all good, you don't care for them. Just may actually take some head changes and tuning, which can be surprisingly difficult for some. They are not overpriced, just compare them to the Asian imported pro lines. Anyhow, I usually do not get into subjective things, everyone should enjoy the drums they like, and keep playing 😎

Sonor is great. No question. I have been drumming for 30 years and must admit that all high elite drums sounds great as they all have kinda an own personality. I played Sonor, Yamaha maple / beech custom absolute, Pearl MMX / Masters Custom and DW Exotique (birch). For me, it is another universe playing DW as you have another tonality, feeling playing them. The possibilities of tuning my DW seem endless. It took me several weeks to even understand how to really tune and find a tone. With DW drums you are not hitting drums, you are playing tons. BTW I tuned them in a manner all friends were almost shocked when they heard a tuned!!! drum. The actual kit reminds me a bit of a jazzy one but with great low end and sounds amazingly musical. What a luxury tone. It would be great to listen to a less hard hitting drumming for once to hear the beauty! of this drum kit. Get Scott Pellegrom on that kit. Congrats DW - what a culture and beauty of sound. I am really touched by those drums.
@davebander9730
@davebander9730 5 жыл бұрын
Exactly - it took me several weeks to tune them in a way I cannot with other drums. DW is like an F1 car. When you get the right tunings after experimenting with different drumheads and tensions, you get a tone no other drum kit can produce.

I was lucky enough to hear John talk about his new FAST toms in the 90s at Sam Ash in Margate Florida. Just me and three other guys. Blew my mind, not the toms, but John's enthusism for the drums (and the too). He is a master salesman, bc he LOVES what he "sells". Theres a YT series called "So n So's Top 10 Rules for Success" and they have ppl like Meryl Streep and Neil Peart featured (Neil's is fun). They should do one with John Goode.

O MY GOODNESS!!! John Good, you have outdone yourself in my opinion! To me this is the most fantastic looking set of drums DW has made. Soooo beautiful!!! On good speakers, they sound just as good as they look. Ugh I wish I could afford a set of these😞 it would look so good on the stage at my church. I would even take a slightly blemished set. If I lived near the DW factory I would just about beg for a job there. I love the precision and detail that goes into making a set of DW drums. Thank you DW for making a great American built product. I only dream of owning these drums. Maybe one day but I doubt anytime in the near future.

I always compliment any host who offers something from their heart, even if I think I could get a better quality product, meal, or anything that was shared with a sincere belief in what they are offering. I currently have a sweet vintage Pearl 4 piece, and a Tama 7 piece arrayed in nearly a full circle around my throne, so unless someone was wanting to give me any new drums, I don't think that I will be buying any more for a while, if ever. I do however like the sound of the collector's series of DW drums, and I love the MDD pedal series, even more than the Iron Cobras from Tama. Yamaha are also really sweet sounding instruments too, but the look and strength of the DWs to me are still strikingly beautiful. I didn't say what I said to you to be a challenge met with a touche, I was just trying to express my feelings about being kind to a fault with people. Sometimes it is made difficult when met with belligerence, or straight up ignorance, but this life is all about learning relationships.

I own a DW Collector's, and I love it. The audio in this video makes this kit sound awful, and yes, I'm wearing decent headphones. Not even Virgil was able to make it sound good. I'm sure this is due entirely to the production of the video rather than the kit itself - but after watching the entire thing, I rewound it several times. The tone/sustain it discusses is almost completely absent.

Great storyteller and great salesman and always sounds so excited about drum finishes and woods BUT it’s one thing to have an awesome backstory for some rare wood BUT what’s the point if it looks good but doesn’t sound that good? It’s all personal preference but imo to my ears hands and feet this kit didn’t sound anything special. In general I find dw drums to be a little dull and funny and doesn’t have a good feel when I play them. And the price they are charging...nahhhh I would never spend that much money for a kit with this sound. I played this kit and messed around with all different tunings and I was not impressed at all. Also played the other special kit they made before this one and that one wasn’t anything special either and they are charging an arm and a leg for these kits. Imo there are kits like the Tama starclassic B.B. that cost 1800 for a 5 piece, just a fraction of this dw kit’s price that sound and feel much better than this kit or any dw collectors series kits. This is just my personal preference and experience but imo dw are overpriced average sounding and feeling drums with basic ass hardware and mounting features with great finishes. You are basically paying thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars for the good finish. I used to own a dw collectors maple mahogany, bought a Tama starclassic B.B. as a gigging kit and quickly realized right away dw is just not the company for me personally, tama’s hardware and mounting features and build quality for the price, specifically the starclassic line is just the best bang for your buck on the market. You got the Tama star drums which are on par with dw collectors prices but those are prolly the best hand made crafted drums in the world but the starclassics are built like tanks and the star hardware features got brought down to the starclassic line and even lowered the price from before. Sold that dw kit and bought another Tama starclassic full bubinga which is absolute heaven. Tama is just the company for me personally But to each their own, what’s everyone else’s opinion on dw drums? Tama drums? What’s your favorite drum company?

Well said and I agree whole heartedly on your take on DW. They're the Harley Davidson of drums: You're paying for the name on the badge when other companies make the same product better for less money. I do love their snares though. They have a crack that's really a step above, but the rest of their drums are so-so. I'm a Gretsch man myself. I finally got my custom "Holy Grail" kit in mahogany that I'd been pinning for my whole life. Saved for 18 months to get what I personally heard and played that I considered heaven in wood and steel. I'll never get another kit again as this does all I need in just the way I want.

Yeah, I've never been impressed by the sound of any DW kit, even when Chester Thompson is playing it (his Pearl and Sonor kits sounded way better!). I'll keep playing my great sounding 40-year old Gretsch kit until I hang up my sticks. It wasn't perfect out of the factory, but with the bearing edges re-cut, it sounds as good as any kit I've ever played or heard...all for less money than a new DW snare drum. Eye candy just ain't for the ears!

I have to agree. Never played a DW that tore my head off and at those prices I kind of need it to tear my head off. I do love the way they make drums, the innovation and the work to better understand grain orientation, just wish I loved their sound. When I bought my last kit I spent 2 years trying every high end kit I could find and it ended up being a Mapex Saturn pro that made me say "I HAVE to have that one" and going into the process I considered Mapex to be a complete joke, boy was I wrong. Same with Tama, the star classic was a close second and I always disliked Tama. It's funny what one discovers when they shop with their ears instead of their eyes

DW propaganda is as good as ever, may be better than the drums it is promoting, the only truth about best drums sounding would be, the blind test, different drum set/brands tested behind an acoustic transparent curtain, as they do in HIFI HIGH END, many will be in for a surprise ! I myself was really surprised to find a relatively cheap '' Mapex'' sounding ways better than a ''PHX ''Yamaha, priced many times higher, as Billy Cobham said once >

JulianFernandez all right you asked for it so here we go. Since 1980 Guillermo Arambula works for DW he is the quality control manager for 30 years and that was in 2010 he still works there to this day as does his son who is a shipping manager of 9yrs, Jimmy Arambula also I imagine it is his brother who is drums operation manager for 31 years as of 2010 Ildefonso Arambula. And to round out the family we've got a wife or sister who is finished ply lead Genoveva Arambula 22yrs.But wait it doesn't stop there. Roland Martinez quality assurance 6yrs, Armando Ochoa lacquer technician 7yrs, Jose Bravo Hardware assembly technician14.5yrs, Francisco Pelayo Drilling and edging Lead 9yrs, Luis Garcia custom painter supervisor17.5 yrs, Maria Avila drum assembly lead 7yrs, Omar Cordero machine shop and Hardware supervisor 6.5yrs, Mateo Gayton lacquer technician 5.5 yrs and I think you get the picture. It seems to me we're not only dealing with nepotism on a grand scale but does anyone else notice the hiring practices that DW is using? I could have go on and on with more names and family connections. However there is one exception that I can see. His name is Shon Smith he's the custom shell shop supervisor and has been with DW for 8.5 years. He's the only Caucasian I could find in upper management that works on the floor. I am in no way a racist. I am simply trying to set the record straight with John the" Wood Whisperer" who consistently won't shut up about how his drums are American made by a hard-working Americans and they might be hard-working Americans born and raised here it just is a little weird that John and Don are the only two Caucasian guys you see in all the videos and in all the factory tours. I would greatly appreciate some feedback. I just look at companies like Q and Truth I know that they're more of a boutique company and not on a grand scale as DW but they hire people who are excited to build drums and are drummers themselves first and foremost. Again any feedback positive or negative is welcome

Karl Hungus I've had one sonor snare in my life. And still have it to this day it's called a pancake and I've never seen one since I bought it at a music store here in San Diego that went out of business in the 90s it is the most interesting concept of the snare drum I've ever come across

DW makes reasonably priced professional drums. And then there is this astronomically overpriced furniture that you really don't need for a good sound. I'll stick to my Sonor gear.

Got that right! Went in there for the last time yesterday to look for a new head that was recently released. They told me over the phone that they had it & when I get there, of course they didn't. Then when the mistake was discovered, they just shrugged it off with a half-assed "sorry" and walked away. One said they could order it, & I told them so could I. In fact, that's just what I did but used Sweetwater instead of Musician's Friend (as they're affiliated with GC). Screw 'em. I'll never set foot in there again and how I was treated is the prime example of why brick and mortar shops are closing their doors.

Ross Gillis Similar situation. Was looking to buy a new guitar after so many years. I had to special order and they charged me shipping. What should’ve been a week wait turned into a month and a half nightmare. When the guitar finally arrived it was the wrong color and with gold hardware 🤦‍♂️ I ended order directly from ESP, no shipping charge, same price and GC and the guitar arrived to my door in three days

And they're not "hand made" like they advertise either. It's just operators pushing buttons on machines. Sure, some final hand sanding & lacquer application, but that's just fit and finish. When I see humans actually drilling the holes & sanding the whole shell by hand, then they can say that.

dogmutty2 are you hitting at illegal or legal? Although I'm a drummer and have been for more than two and a half decades I worked at Taylor Guitars here in San Diego and it's basically the same thing with the staff. All of the upper management for the night crew were related it's the same at DW all of the quality control manager is married to the shipping manager and the shipping manager son is the head of the satin Department it's the same thing throughout it goes on and on. Don and John are the only Gringos that work at DW.

dogmutty2 you know what my complaint is not with you dog. It's with John and Don. Every time I see one of your tours of the factory all I see is Hispanic workers rarely ever do I see a gringo or white man working in your factory so how can you say a hundred percent American made and a hundred percent american-backed when it's clearly by this individual's admission Hispanic and legal or illegal Hispanics making these drums I would never ever spend thousands of dollars on a DW drum kit you're just fooling us with your car salesman Style and attitude. Granted it seems like you know a lot about wood specie but I guarantee the guys at sonar or Gretsch know way more than you do about wood species. So drop the infomercial attitude and your prices it's really starting to piss people off in the drumming community

I'm sorry your choice of drummers doesn't impress me he may have had his day but I can out drumming anytime he wants to set up next to me and he can go first. Não vai American Music Quiz american girls, and boys completed by using Tonya Harding's method of competition a baseball bat. 🇺🇸🖤 That's the only way America knows how to compete otherwise it's not competition for the rest of the world it's no competition for me not any one of your drummers not even Terry Bozzio and a lot of drummers from the late 60s and 70s they learned the Boom... Daga Daga Daga Daga Daga Daga Daga Daga Daga Daga Daga Daga. James Brown used boomDaga Dag! But it was I jojet who came up with a drum part. The drum part that I created Boomdaga Daga, doesn't stop there, it was a rudiment I created based on a tablet alphabet boondoggle is what James Brown called it but it's part of the toddler alphabet and it's supposed to be a non-ending phrase a progressive phrase that doesn't repeat itself as often it doesn't repeat itself at all if you keep innovating it carries no one the one is set by The Soloist and the bass player the drums lead and the rest of the musicians follow and that something American musicians don't know how to do so it's repetitious my chops are repetitions because there's no improvisation in the American musician the American Musician is a trained monkey and no more will ever come of it because if you don't understand improvisation and you haven't got a good ear to listen to what's being produced and if you don't know how to follow a drummer go and get yourself a monkey because U toob, gotta eat.🍌🍞🍔🍳🍟🧀🌭🍳🥚🍳 Most American musicians become 💉💊💉💊💉💊⚰️🗿🚽 drug addicts and alcoholics alcohol and opiates do not work to make good music cocaine will not make good music alcohol just makes you look like a fool idiot on stage and the way you people dress the way musicians today dress shameful ugly that's not a Stigmata I want to live next to that stinks you look like Rags you look like fucking Street Origins Baker's when you sit on stage and pretend to be musicians go fuck yourself learn how to play your instrument before you call yourself learning how to play by notes by your monkey now I get a golden cup while you can afford it so you can look representable on the street

He said that this collection is limited to 200. And guess what: Forests are erased anyway in order to find rare metals or produce meat finally. So if John takes some trees, even better I think. This is nothing in comparison to killing forests.
