There's a book called the man who heard voices and it's about m night trying to get lady in the water made. It's fascinating. He had a huge falling out with Disney and left to go to Warner Bros and pretty much everyone that had his back and he worked with prior to Lady had abandoned him. He lost confidence, I believe. Disney didn't believe in lady and really didn't wanna make it, but gave him the green light. M night decided not to make it because he didn't feel they wanted to do it. So he went to wb.

There's actually a young adult book that has a close enough plot (no monsters, I believe, other than a lack of modern health care) from the 90s called Running Out of Time. That part isn’t even really a joke. There ARE a lot of actors who actually demand that on film sets. Not even just during takes... the entire time the actor is on set, you’re not allowed to look them in the eyes. It’s one of the most fucked up, yet strangely understandable things about the movie industry. Some actors are just that sensitive about their process and don’t want to be taken out of character by having to acknowledge that there’s a bunch of human beings around them that wouldn’t be there in the story, so they don’t want to have someone look them in the eyes and connect with their humanity in a way that’s hard to ignore. It’s easier to pretend nobody is there if you never actually “see” them. Of course, the other way to look at it is that a lot of Hollywood stars are pampered, elitist, entitled brats who get a sense of satisfaction from feeling “above” the plebs working on set and would never condescend to recognize their humanity by giving them the privilege of looking a God among insects in the eye. 🤷♂️ Maybe somewhere in between.

Hi Chris. I worked on Glass for M. Night. I was just a stand-in but after I watched your vid I thought you might like to know M Night was always very kind to me and several times took cast and crew out for dinner and drinks. He was so cool and personable. All crew and cast knew 100 percent he was in charge and you do what he says, however, he never abused that always a very cool guy.

I also agree, but I can't stand to watch it now because I have a mentally disabled son. It threw the whole story into a totally different light for me. Lady in the Water is beautifully written and acted. I think it fell short because He was trying to say more than the movie could really carry. It was no where near as bad a film as the critics tried to say it was. It has become my 9 year old daughter's favorite movie.

I watched this when it originally aired, right before I was going to see The Village. I thought it was so stupid I went to see Harold and Kumar instead. I haven't watched an M. Night movie since. Whenever I hear his name, this is the first thing that pops into my head. It ruined his movies for me.

Hey, Chris! I had no idea this “documentary” existed so I found this fascinating. I run hot & cold with MNS’s films. SIGNS & THE SIXTH SENSE are my favorites & I see something new with each viewing. If I really like a movie, I’ll watch it repeatedly & focus on a different aspect each time. The movie as a whole first, then the writing, acting, directing, cinematography, music & lighting etc. I haven’t dissected a lot of movies but I find it a very satisfying and illuminating experience. Thank you for your perseverance and following your dream.

I think this would’ve been better if the director wasn’t an established, Oscar-nominated filmmaker. I think it would’ve been better if it was payed actors playing really stupid filmmakers. That way, the whole “treating normal things like they were this big mystery” would’ve worked better and would’ve been WAY funnier.

This was so interesting. I too am a long time fan, and I still remember the first time I saw Signs in 2002: it was crazy. That's one of the reasons I relate to you so much, Chris, and I totally get your approach, avoiding the same old nasty comments about M. Night and his career. You probably have been asked this a ton of times this, but I wonder if you read the book "The Man Who Heard Voices: Or, How M. Night Shyamalan Risked His Career on a Fairy Tale": it's a great behind the scenes look into the production of Lady in the Water. I also heard Night was disappointed about this "biography", 'cause he felt like it didn't give a good image of him, but I personally liked this book a lot, and I think after reading it I understood his personality, fears and desires way more.

I'm pretty sure that the filmmaker pacing back and forth in his hotel room, constantly rewinding tapes like it's CSI, thinking that every little thing is mysterious, and that there must be something wrong with Night if he closes off a film set outside of LA are all part of the satire of journalists being too nosy and speculative about everything.

I remember stumbling onto the scene with the fan site this while channel surfing as a 14 year old who was really excited for Shyamalan's next big "horror" film, The Village. When the 5-level fan started guessing what director was wearing and how everyone was so shaken up about it, I thought, "Whoa...what the hell is this?! Who/what is M. Night Shyamalan, really?!" ...then I found out as an adult that it was all fake. One of the best gotcha moments ever. Still, randomly stumbling onto that scene is imprinted into my brain forever, haha!! Love it!
