I actually really like some of the fluff they give for this event in “The Talons of Horus.” The thousand sons of course have a great deal of bitterness in their hearts but by the time the black legions formed it’s more directed towards the sons of Horus. Many of them simply see the space wolves as useful idiots and even feel bad for them because the worst thing a thousand son can imagine is to be so horrifically fooled.

@@BM-is5ei You've... you've never read the book then. Or at least you're remembering it incorrectly. Russ BOMBARDED THE ENTIRE PLANET, killing all cities besides the one Magnus and the Legion were in. Magnus sulked in his library and ACTIVELY SABOTAGED his own legion so that they could be properly "punished" for his "crimes". There was no signal being jammed, Kasper Ansbach Hawser was a Chaos plant that Russ thought was a Hidden One of the Thousand Sons, and thus his message through Hawser to Magnus to surrender never actually got through. So no, it wasn't Magnus being a "petulant child". He was truly repentant, and a Chaos agent made sure that Horus's plan went through. So no, they didn't land "urging him to accompany them to Terra". Magnus didn't refuse. Your confusion is your incorrect memory about what happened.

If anything, this event, the moment the Emperor chose Russ for the mission, shows to full extent that the Imperium, and the Emperor by proxy, are not and never have been "good". Well-intentioned perhaps, but the "bring order to the galaxy" line of thought that the Emperor espoused is little different from a certain other galactic Emperor, only clad in gold and glamour. The Emperor is anathema to Chaos not because he is "good", far from it. No, it not Good vs Evil, but rather Order vs Chaos brought to its extreme conclusion. And for all Order can clad itself in the shining glamour of virtue, we have plenty of narratives that show the evils of Order and Law absolute. To extreme Order, and its embodiment the Emperor Himself, any word but his is Blasphemy. Any question but "What is Thy will?" is grounds for censure and humiliation. Any vision but His to be grounds for complete and utter annihilation. Any "good" created from such a force is incidental. Pure Order is violent, brutal, and cruel, especially to anyone who dares ask the question "Why?". Magnus was no Saint, arrogant, reckless, and naive as he was, but neither was he a villain, and yet still the Emperor bid him to obey an order without explanation and sentenced him to death when Magnus defied it for reasons understandable to any with compassion. Chaos may be monstrous in its inhuman madness and completely anathema to the Imperium, but at the end of the day, they both have one similarity: despite the smallest of exceptions, they are evil, utterly and to the core.

I compare Emps sending Russ to censure Magnus vs. sending Guilliman to censure Lorgar. Guilliman HATED burning Monarchia, but he did it. He also evacuated all the civilians first, did exactly as much damage as he had to, and when Lorgar hit him really hard with a mace, he just picked himself up, dusted himself off, and asked if they were done yet. Can you imagine Russ at Monarchia? There would've been so many casualties. Russ is an animal. And the Emps sent him with the Ordo Sinister, the Custodes, the Sisters of Silence and generally just more then enough force to scour Prospero clean. He has to have known this situation would spiral out of control really quickly. The best case scenario is the Emps was angry and making decisions from emotion. The worst case is he deliberately pushed Magnus into the arms of Chaos. Either way it's bad.
@ZeroNumerous
@ZeroNumerous 2 жыл бұрын
@@AnIdiotsLantern Or, the third option: The Emperor knew Magnus was fallen long before Magnus himself did. And make no mistake: Magnus had already fallen by the time the Emperor ordered him apprehended. Magnus had, by that point, bargained and accepted the help from Tzeentch twice. First to "cure" the Flesh Change--a touch of Tzeentch from the beginning--and second to blast through the Emperor's wards around the human webway. He further trusted Tzeentch more than his own father. Magnus was corrupt to the core already. Magnus was ordered to be apprehended. The Emperor did not order Magnus killed, nor did he order Magnus destroyed. He ordered Magnus apprehended, and sent forces with the assumption that Magnus would refuse as he knew Magnus had fallen. Tzeentch, through Horus, turned that apprehension order into an order of execution in order to force Magnus' hand. If you assume the Emperor is the only acting entity, then yes he certainly looks evil. If you look at it as another move in the Great Game of Chaos then you realize it was Tzeentch, not the Emperor, who had tried to kill Magnus.
@AnIdiotsLantern

@@ZeroNumerous it was not out of the Emperor’s power to help if he wanted to. He didn’t. And there’s a difference between unknowingly accepting help from a malevolent force and willingly betraying your family. Magnus’s hand was forced one way or another. He was really screwed no matter which side of the Heresy he came down on. As soon as the Webway was wreaked, his options were either to serve chaos or to be a battery and let his legion all die, and really I can’t get myself into a place where I buy that as the more moral option

@@Hunk666 On the contrary, Magnus did a LOT wrong, and I'm a fan of him! Problem was, no one took the time to actually explain why it was wrong in the first place. Beyond superstition, they could not, for Emps refused to explain to anyone, and His xenophobic propaganda denied access to outside sources that warned of the danger (the Aeldari for one). And as said before, Emps would always expect people to obey without question, so him espousing "no psykers" was likely in his mind the end of it. In His absolute Order, that should have been sufficient. But no one does what their told without explanation, and when that order trampled on all that Magnus was, well.... Add in Tzeentch's manipulations, and is it an surprise things happened as they did?

I can actually see at this point the Emperor's own secrecy about the Imperial Webway actively working against his efforts. My belief is the Emperor needed Magnus alive on Terra so he could power the Golden Throne long enough for the Emperor to seal the rifts and stabilize the gateway. However because of the secrecy around the project either Valdor did not know or was forbidden from sharing information to Russ on the absolute necessity for Magnus to be brought alive and the deployment of all the assets was merely a means to "convince" Magnus to come peacefully. Though I have to agree in the assessment of Russ, for all the supposed reluctance to kill his brother and the trickery of Horus, Russ seemed quite eager to drop several gigatons of "screw you!" upon Magnus and his legion. Granted Magnus's plan on how to handle this didn't help but I'm not sure even him sitting in an unarmed trawler in high orbit over Prospero broadcasting his location and surrender on every frequency would have halted the execution of Prospero.

After Russ beat Magnus 1 on 1, he retreated into the warp, which is where he made his pact with Tzeench. From then on the Thousand Sons served the king of plots, with Horus only being their tool to do so. In all likelihood, Horus' betrayal was the first secret Magus learned in the warp. According to the books, the Thousand Sons spent most of the the siege of terra plundering the most arcane relics hidden below the Imperial Palace in preparation for their retreat to the warp. Whether they did this to further their own powers or to preserve the secrets of humanity from the ravages of the traitors is hard to say, probably doubly so for the Sons themselves.

Even the Night Haunter, for all of his insanity, was conflicted about the atrocities he committed, but Russ was perfectly content to be little more than an animal. A calculating, vainglorious animal, but an animal nonetheless. It's astounding that the Wolves never fell to Khorne during the Heresy, considering their attitude towards war and death. To be fair to Russ, Horus spoke with the Emperor’s voice. So much like Malcador an order from Horus was near indistinguishable from an order by the Emperor himself. We don't talk enough about how, once the Webway was messed up, the Good Ending for Loyalist Magnus would've involved his entire legion being culled and Magnus himself being bolted into the Golden Throne to have his psychic powers drained away while his body falls to peices, in the place of his shitty dad. The one case where maybe falling to chaos really was the less horrible option.
@finlayames6216
@finlayames6216 2 жыл бұрын
Is it actually confirmed that the golden throne would affect him like that? There is 2 differences between him and his dad. 1. Magnus and the throne were meant to work together (either he was designed for it or it was designed for him, I’m not sure which design came first). 2. Magnus would in theory but fit and healthy when he sat on it while the emperor was mortally wounded and only kept alive by the throne. Admittedly this isn’t an area of the lore I know much about so I very well could be wrong

@@finlayames6216 let me put it this way - if I were Magnus, no way in hell am I sitting on that big shiny chair. The odds are non zero that I’m never standing up again. Also there’s the “we’ve got to kill all your sons” thing which even Vulkan admits he could never do. There’s really no good options here. Magnus took the less terrible one.
@finlayames6216
@finlayames6216 2 жыл бұрын
@@AnIdiotsLantern oh I’m not saying it’s a good option, but there seems to be a widely held belief it would turn him into a vegetable and I’m not sure that’s actually supported. Now as you say, the rest of the situation would be so shitty it’s arguable not knowing anything would be preferable but I’ve not come across anything to suggest it would affect his mind.
@AnIdiotsLantern
@AnIdiotsLantern 2 жыл бұрын
@@finlayames6216 if you’re Magnus are you taking that chance? Especially considering everything else going on, like the deaths of all of your sons? If odds are good that you’ll be stuck as a living battery for forever, powering a device that even the Emperor is sweating balls to use, is, “well it might not be as bad as it looks” a really comforting option?
@finlayames6216
@finlayames6216 2 жыл бұрын
@@AnIdiotsLantern it’s a shit option and on that part I’d actually agree with Magnus (even if I find him insufferable most the time). My point was basically to ask if there’s any evidence that actually points to the throne affecting his mind since this idea is common but I’m not sure where it came from. Again, not saying it’s a good option even if it doesn’t but just trying to understand what would actually happen to him if it went according to the plan

I only wish for two things: One Oculus Imperia a week That, if GW's big eye of Terror ever notices you, they hire you instead of striking your channel down. I think your blend of matter-of-fact research and disgruntled but loyal Imperial citizen makes this a unique insight into the 40k world. I am a historian by trade and I appreciate the historian-like apprach to the various accounta and sources as the ultimate way to make any setting believable.

might have missed it but I wonder why Valdor just let Horus go like "oh nah actually orders changed, burn the planet to the ground"
@finlayames6216
@finlayames6216 2 жыл бұрын
Russ was technically higher ranking the Valdor and it’s not exactly clear why Russ decided to be so hostile to Magnus. It seems like Horus didn’t order the attack exactly but instead gave Russ the nudge to do what Russ likely wanted to do, execute Magnus and his legions

I kind of would've preferred if Russ wouldn't have believed Magnus to be a traitor, and if he would've thought that this was a "misunderstanding". The reason is later lore, the deleted brothers, and the way you look at an enemy. If Russ would've looked at Magnus as an enemy and traitor, he, as a Primarch would've noticed so many things being amiss. But believing a brother to be innocent, and being betrayed, brings up much emotion and confusion, which could be abused. The surprise I think is important.
