Guilliman probably has an entire squad of Custodes and Assassinorum operatives whose sole job is to keep Occulus from getting killed by Puritan Inquisitors at this point. I imagine him walking through his hab-block to go to the bathroom or something while assassins try to jump him, only to be yanked back by Custodes before he notices them.

Yeah. It would be entirely in keeping with the Lion's nature to see straight through the deception, ask anyway to see what answer he would get, and then continue pretending he believed their answer. That said, I can also see the Lion thinking he would see through any deception, believing they wouldn't dare lie to him because they would surely know he would see through it, and so missing it entirely.

I’m pretty sure he knew he was being “played with”, but didn’t know in what specific WAY he was being tricked and didn’t care enough to push the issue and find out. He may have suspected that one of them was the primarch or even known which it was, but i personally doubt it. The first specialized IN elite diversity of specialized warfare, not any singular field that would NEED the ability to spot alpharius on sight, so maybe Emps gave him that sensitivity, but he I wouldn’t guarantee it. As the last line of defense, Dorn would need to be able to detect spies that might circumnavigate said defenses by opening the gates, and as Emps’ executioner intended to kill rogue primarchs, Russ would need that ability too, but Emps structured the primarchs to each have clear checks and balances on the others, so I’d theorize that the ability to see through alpharius’s disguise was probably gifted on a case-by-case basis.

I am of the opinion that some of the Primarchs knew at the very least, some of the story. We know that Alpharius and Omegon can be identified. In Legion, John Grammaticus said that each was identifiable. Dorn was also able to identify Alpharius. Lorgar knew there were two Primarchs. Then, there's the curious actions of Roboute Guilliman. Roboute is not adverse to working in secrets. He worked with Corvus Corax and learned from him. Look at Roboute's actions during Hexarchy crisis. He was even willing to work with Lorgar, who he called "an embarrassment" and "an impediment to the effective rule of the Imperium." Yet, Roboute refused to work with Alpharius. Why? It can't be as simple as "I don't like his methods." The Roboute we know would certainly not be that petty. We also know that Robotue analytical ability is beyond par. Perhaps only the Emperor himself could challenge it. His ability to take scraps of information and create a broad picture is without peer. Could it be that he saw something that he did not approve? The Primarchs have expressed dislike to their brothers before, but usually with cause. Corvus Corax disliked Horus because he felt that Horus misused his Raven Guard, severely depleting it's numbers. So, what was the enmity between Roboute and Alpharius? My speculation is that Roboute discovered Alpha Legion infiltrators in his Ultramarines.

It could even go deeper. Roboute is indeed willing to learn from others, understands the necessity of having various approaches to a problem, and is indeed a highly analytical person. What if Guilliman does not in fact have anything against Alpharius, but just professed dislike to cover for his brother(s) and to hide a closer relationship than it first appears. What if he understood the necessity of infiltrators and operatives even within the other legions as a failsafe. What if, perhaps, he was also willing to lie to support them and create a false divide between them. And what if their worries were proven right by the treachery and heresy of Horus, necessitating an undercover false flag operation that has stood for 10,000 years as the Alpha Legion await the perfect opportunity to enact the Emperors will from within the forces of the traitors themselves...

I'd say Roboute once he got grasp of what Alpha Legion is, ASSUMED that Ultramar, Ultramarines are infiltrated anyway. Perhaps he had discovered not only infiltration, but in theoretical-practial he found set of goals, that were disconcerning to the extreme.

But historitor! Have you misplaced Arnaid’s notes on the meeting of the Lion and Alpharius? “I watched and listened. Though superficially different, there was something disconcertingly similar about the way the two of them spoke. It was as if the words were only surface-deep, and that the true import of what they said was still unspoken, locked in hidden caskets of meaning.” Clearly, if his words are to be believed, the historical record shows that Lion El’jonson wasn’t completely blind to who he was talking to, be it the man “Alpha” or the representation of alpharius. Given the primarch of The First’s ability to perceive the warp (Zahariel, Saroshi mines), I do not believe it would be a stretch to argue that The Lion could not only perceive who he was talking to, but unlike Magnus, was not willing to risk our glorious Emperor’s plans by revealing any information beyond what was already public rumour of said alpha legion. If the alpha legion tests, then they may have also seen how the Lion behaves with information, his discretion may have been tested.

The Dark Angels secretive nature makes makes more sense if "Big A" was a founder of the Inner Circle. Legions I and XX have far too many first/last parallels to be ignored; even the name Alpha makes it seem like the Angels were his beta-test.

He seems to be heavily drawing on Alpharius: Head of the Hydra, from the Primarch series, and the in-universe "Codex Hydra" seems to be a nod to this. Both are first person testimonies from Alpharius, and both begin (more or less) with "I am Alpharius. This is a lie."

There is no mystery to the Alpha Legion's motives or purpose, never has been. Through all the levels of secrets, lies, and misdirection, the Alpha Legion lost track of what they were doing and now their warbands are just making it up as they go. Alpharius, Omegon, and all their sons are basically Captain Jack Sparrow.

@@sirius6738 Alpharius was killed by Rogal Dorn on Hydra, a moon of Pluto. Omegon got killed by Guillaume on a planet called Eskrador, which belonged to the realms of the Alpha Legion. But then again, there seem to be plenty of portrayals showing Guillaume killing _Alpharius_ on Eskrador, so it could be possible that Omegon got mistaken for Alpharius here, since the loyalists never openly reported the death of Alpharius since they did not want to admit a traitor primarch actually managed to sneak into the solar system, or maybe he killed a doppelganger. Or maybe they are both alive and both killed primarchs were doppelgangers or... well, the typical Alpha Legion mess here...

What's really interesting is that the encounter with the Lion is told from the Dark Angels perspective in the short story First Legion. In that account, there was only one Alpha legionary who presented himself to the Lion and the exchange was noticeably different. What this means is that Alpharius' account is likely a lie given the untrustworthy narrator issue.

considering the alpha legion's involvement in the Siege of Terra narrative and in a particularly pivotal series set in the 40k era which may have resounding reverberations on the lore when it is completed, the primarchs and every member of the legion might be the only beings immune to the sorcery of the ruinous powers. For both demons and their hunters, True Names are necessary for combat. What happens when your true name isn't just hidden, but this meta-identity, Alpharius, is like a spell that removes any True Name. The Burning of Prospero showed how hiding a true name was an invaluable weapon against sorcery and chaos. Not having one makes you completely impervious.
