35:01 - the pacing is very PURPOSEFUL! A lot of people want a story like the following! BANG! CLUE! LEAD AFTER LEAD! But this show shows that in reality a case like this can take YEARS! It's slow for a reason! And it shows the toll a case like this can take on real life Homicide detectives! If it helps...the interviews with the cops is 2013 and the case itself is in 1995...there is also a skip forward in the case to 2002... I've been saying it FOR YEARS! THIS IS ONE OF, IF NOT, THE BEST, SEASON OF TV EVER MADE!!! ❤❤❤ I also believe that the casting of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson is what makes this show so great! If just one of them was cast different it wouldn't work! Their chemistry was OFF THE CHARTS! This is the show that made me believe that TV was overtaking movies and cinema! And it's still happening now! All we get in cinema today is superhero movies...and boring lazy remakes...no originality like this show...As a big cinema-movie-going fan, it's a bit shit to see no originality or creativity to create that movie-going experience but if you think of the greatest writing in the past 10-20 years...Sons of Anarchy, Breaking Bad, True Detective, Vikings, The Last Kingdom...I think it's a very good trade off to get great TV shows like this that we can binge watch every day! And at 44:05 - the interview scenes with Rust is what attracted McConaughey to the role! One of THE MOST UNDERRATED ACTORS OF THE 21ST CENTURY! ❤❤❤

Hey Spartan and Pudgey, I think you have to understand that most TV shows try to give too many clues in each episode. "True Detective" uses not only the current Satanical case to guide you through the mystery. ---------- The show uses the dialogue of both characters to lead to where to look for clues and how to look for clues. ------------ How else do you find an abandoned burnt down satanical church in the middle of nowhere. Detective work is monotonous boring breadcrumbs that lead to more breadcrumbs. Eventually you get a piece of bread.

this show doesn't primarily focus on "moving the story forward", as you're pointing out. it's a deep character study in first place, and a slow burn detective case in second place. now don't get me wrong, the payoff of the plot is definitely coming, but it's there mostly to talk about the main characters themselves. it's ultimately all about them. under pressure characters make decisions, and in those decisions they reveal who they are. that is peak character development. I hope you're enjoying this as much as I'm enjoying watching you guys. have fun!

Hey Spartan and Pudgey, by episode 2 we see so many of Marty's flaws. Marty is such a realistic character portrayal by Woody Harelson. ------ It seems like the start of the show that Rust is the dysfunctional personality when in fact it's Marty. ------ Marty's very big flaws in his personal life which cause so much more chaos to the relationship between the two characters. Since you heard the name, King in Yellow.. i can say it without spoiler, this is connected to HP Lovecraft's universe. If you 2 wanna know more, google Yellow King or King in Yellow. Edit: As for the slowness of the episodes.. It 100% reflect the name of the show, TRUE DETECTIVE.. this is how 90% of no witnesses murk's are pacing, days of nothing, until they find some smallest thing they can grasp on. Its actually quite realistic. Edit2: I'll add, this is why, the other seasons are such let down.. cus season 1 actually established the fact that this is happening in Lovecraft's "world". That was both genius, ballsy, most of all it shown vision. And next seasons should have done justice to it, should have respected the name that is associated with this show now, HP Lovecraft, legend of horror. Season 2 was good, even thou bit incoherent, it still shown respect with such acting performances, from some of the best A listers.. that they actually redeemed themselves with half-bad writing. But seasons 3 and 4!? I'd honestly advise you NOT to watch them. They are that embarrassing.
@pabloc88083 ай бұрын
I partly disagree with your second addition about it being in "Lovecraft's world" because (SPOILERS) . . . . . . . . . The ending is very deliberately ambiguous on whether there is any supernatural aspect to the case and to the story. Yes, maybe there is a supernatural entity, a "King in Yellow". Maybe it's just something the cultists wrapped themselves in to make their perversion more "interesting". Maybe they genuinely believed in it but it was never real. We, the audience are led to believe there might be some supernatural aspect because of Rust's hallucinations, but that doesn't mean any of it is real. There are plenty of real-life cults that do weird, messed up stuff just like in the show, doesn't mean their gods are real. That said, in my opinion that makes season 1 even more interesting. We'll never know if there's some unfathomable god pulling the strings, or if it's just the darkness of the human mind at work, and to me that's the point, the evil men are capable of is just as endless and its whole just as incomprehensible as an Elder God. It's a shame seasons 2 and 3 didn't follow that theme, and that season 4 tried but ultimately didn't stick the landing.
@RegTarg0113 ай бұрын
@@pabloc8808 if it was JUST "King in Yellow".. sure. But you don't put King in Yellow and Carcosa in same show, without that meaning, 100%, it is HP Lovecrafts world. Where would those people learn the word Carcosa? Unless from the Hastur(King in Yellow) himself, through someone he used as a puppet to play with(like the killer.. or the entire family, etc). I am 99% sure Rust did NOT hallucinate Carcosa, when he seen it.. Ladue also used the phrase 'Dark Stars' and Carcosa.. which means he seen the same thing Rust did.
@pabloc88083 ай бұрын
@@RegTarg011 They believing in the King in Yellow and Carcosa doesn't necessarily mean those things are real and this is Lovecraft's world; it could simply mean Lovecraft's works exist in this world and they chose to wrap themselves in that mythos, or that the leaders of the cult used that to manipulate people like Ledoux and Errol and such, since they're mentally messed up from birth or from drug use. Again, it's not a stretch to say that since that stuff happens in real life, cult leaders who don't believe a word they say but use that to manipulate their followers. What I'm saying is, it's open to interpretation because we never see something truly supernatural except through Rust's eyes, and he's pretty unreliable in that sense. When we hear it from other characters, it's drug users like Ledoux, or Errol who's mentally challenged, so they're are also unreliable.
@RegTarg0113 ай бұрын
@@pabloc8808 w/e bro... I see this as a story set in a Lovecraftin world. U don't have to see an Elder God, for it to be the same universe. The simplicity of it is exactly what makes me see this as such.. They pierce in to "our" reality through countless small holes.. this was one of them. This crazy family sacrificing kids for Yellow King. To use this much reference, and NOT to be it.. would be shameless and pathetic from the writers side. Which they undoubtably knew. Person can watch the show, without knowing anything about Lovecraft, and that was the point. But also for Lovecraft fans to recognize it.

"If things were so great, they never would have changed." It sounds good on the surface, and to a degree there's some truth in it, but there's an idea that even if we had a utopia, we would grow bored with the repetitive and safe nature of such an environment, and we would eventually act out, causing chaotic events just to get the rush of the unpredictable. Basically, the argument is that we desire some sort of drama in life. We crave struggle to the degree that it is just challenging enough to make us better in some way, but not insurmountable. We need the freedom to be unhappy and to change, but a world "too great" would be too sanitized for our instincts to bear.
