I am German and had the good fortune of seeing the Nefertiti bust twice. Its beauty is truly mesmerizing! Everyone interested should be able to see it at least once. But sadly that's not possible. We cannot send the bust on a worldwide tour or something. That would be ridiculously dangerous both conservation- and security-wise. That's why I think giving it back to Egypt permanently is the best thing we could do. When you have to decide for one country the bust should be where it comes from. Where Nefertiti herself lived her life.
@Ginny855 Жыл бұрын
@ Thanks for your reply 😊 The difference is that the Nefertiti bust wasn't excavated in Germany but in Egypt, whereas in your example the Roman artifacts would be part of your country's own history. The Romans lived and worked there because your country was part of the Roman Empire (right?). So they would have either produced the goods locally or got them from another corner within the Empire. That's why in my opinion you wouldn't need to give them back to Italy. Not because the Italians aren't the same people as the Romans, which they clearly are not, just like modern Egyptians aren't the same people as ancient Egyptians, as you pointed out correctly. But because the Romans themselves would have used those "artifacts" on the spot. The bust on the other hand was neither produced in "Germany" nor was it imported there within Nefertiti's lifetime, but millennia later. The ancient Egyptians had nothing to do with "Germany" back then, so they are no part my country's ancient history.
@marktrain9498 Жыл бұрын
If Egypt were a politically stable country, I would agree. However, we've seen what happened to the ancient Buddhist monuments in Afghanistan. I think the bust should be left where it's safe, at least for now. Perhaps in another hundred years, Egypt will be peaceful and stable again.

Love this Egypt 101 channel. I was very interested in Egyptian archaeology in my much, much younger days. Pictures of this bust certainly fascinated me then and still do today. In 8th grade, for Halloween, I wanted to go to my school's costume party as Nefertiti. My father made a headdress out of paper and glue, including a three-dimensional coiled paper snake on the front and painted it appropriately. I made a collar out of colored pasta strung on some yarn and my mother made a dress out of a white bed sheet to finish the costume. That was 64 years ago. I still have the headdress. It's pretty much in the same condition that it was in when he made it for me.

I came to this channel because of the Cleopatra controversy - love it. Nefertiti is awesome. It is so wonderful made. And it was made 2500 years ago. It demonstrates that ancient Egyptians were at least as skillful as us today or more. At that time Egypt was part of the Ottoman Empire - they didn't care to preserve anything, no value to them. So a lot of artifacts were "saved" from islamic barbarism (no offense). Legally what I can read it is clean that she is in Germany, as much as it can be. Being German I am in favor to give it back to Egypt. Egypt is not the same like 100 years ago. They are independent now and they take care of their heritage as much as they can. But they need international support.

Museum exhibits frequently travel. Perhaps the answer here is for the bust to spend part of the time in Germany and part in Egypt. If the bust itself is a particular tourist draw, and fees are charged, these fees can be split between the museums (no matter which one is displaying it).
@Egypt_101 Жыл бұрын
That isn't a bad idea, but this artifact in particular is problematic: It's extremely fragile. So much so that the museum has recently listed it as 'unmovable' because of its fragility. So I don't think traveling back and forth would be good for it.
@elissahunt Жыл бұрын
@@Egypt_101 Ah, yes. That is certainly a problem. In that case, I'm in favor of a return to Egypt. @Egypt_101 Жыл бұрын
@@elissahunt I do believe the fragility of the bust isn't just a convenient excuse not to have it re-located. 😉 Anecdotally, I have heard that one reason they were able to do a definitive chemical analysis on the paint is because bits and pieces of it were flaking off last time they moved it around. Before, it's unthinkable to scrape a bit of paint to test (though Borchardt did that back in the day), but since some came off on its own, that made it Ok I guess.

Most of the artifacts of ancient Egypt fell victim to grave robbers and looters and would have ended up either being sold off to dubious people or even destroyed. Those rightfully obtained, like the bust of Nefertiti, should remain were they are. Egypt has given up the ownership and that´s that! In case of the Benin bronce artifacts, the story is different. Legally, you cannot obtain ownership of goods stolen, but see what just happened when they were returned. Instead of being displayed in the museum that Germany paid for being built, they disappeared in the koffers of a member of the ruling family to be sold to those bidding the most. So many African countries have a rather careless attitude twords their own histoory and culture that I thin returning artifacts is debatable.

If Egypt has any surplus artifacts it can spare, it may gift, lend - or have it exhibited, abroad until recall - stimulating *an exchange of archeologists between the countries, back and forth* - creating a bond of scientific research and cultural exchange. It is not like the discovery will be rewritten due to handing the items back - after the passing of the archeological finder, three generations ago...

I guess an issue could be who did the work and who paid for the cost of the excavation? If only the German team did the work and they paid for all of the costs, I can see why they think they have a claim. Also, you said there was some paperwork that almost seemed like a contract that the Egyptians signed. Of course, it could have be signed under coercion. Just because the Germans did the work doesn't mean the Egyptians were in favor of if being done at the time and in that manner. Did Eygpt get their first pick on what items would go to who? If not, I can see why they might be angry because these artifacts are part of their history. In the case of this, I think either an international court should decide or just be decided by the parties involved since I'm an American. My couintry is less that 250 years old. Your country has been around for 10,000s of years. Great question.
@Egypt_101 Жыл бұрын
In simple terms (the politics were complicated even back then), Egypt granted foreigners the right to dig and look for things, under the conditions that the foreigners would pay for everything, and Egypt got to keep half of what was found (and supposedly had first dibs). This was of course a very unregulated way of doing things and the personal bias of whoever was in charge dictated who got what. In this case in particular, the Egyptologist and responsible excavation inspector representing Egypt was a Frenchman named Gustave Lefèbvre and he oversaw how things were divided, such that each party was allotted seven groups of finds of comparable significance. The 'document' I showed was one of Borchardt's notes, the actual documentation is boring lists of things that look like Excel spreadsheets, but they also had photographs of the items, and Lefèbvre is said to have personally handled artifacts. But then Egypt's government changed, and the new people in charge wanted to undo what the previous government had done.

They shouldn't have taken it from the 1st place, luckily it survived the bombing of the 2nd world war, not like the Bahareyasaurus, the dinosaur that was discovered in Egypt and totally destroyed in the bombing of Munich 2. Given the political instability and bad management in Egypt now, and the stability and better management in Germany, it's better to keep it in Berlin 3. Egyptians should enter museums with Egyptian stolen monuments for free :) and so with any nationality with their stolen work 4. When the safety of the statue is guaranteed (when Egypt has stability and good management, maybe in 100 year) then it should be transferred to Egypt with all the Egyptoan monuments everywhere... but then Egypt have to build like 5 additional giant museums

I think there shouldn't be a discussion about who owns a unique historical artifact - it's part of human history, so it belongs to all humanity. But it should be stored and displayed in a museum in the country of origins - only that way you could portray historical continuity: from before to after.
@olgakuranova7986 Жыл бұрын
@Anteros1966 I agree, but I suggested it only for unique, one of a kind artifacts. A lot of items, even if they are precious, are not that unique: as in a piece of burial jewelry is precious, but there's enough to be displayed all over the world to show in which style burial jewelry was made. But if it's something that exists as a one piece only, I do believe it should be stored and displayed in a country of origin. On the contrary, it's been proven to be genuine (by multiple disciplines), but the myth that it's fake simply won't die. 😉 The style of the bust is unusual, but not out of the realm of what an ancient Egyptian sculptor could do, especially during the Amarna period when Egyptian art in general had a big shift in style. As for there not being others of similar style, if this was a singular innovative work (like for example Van Gogh's paintings, which were of a completely new style at the time), it didn't stick around for anyone else to be inspired by it and copy it; it's believed it was just left in the sculptor's workshop when Amarna was abandoned. If there were more like it out there, we just haven't found them yet, or they have not survived the passage of time.

Not German, but i have seen it in the Berlin museum some time ago. - I think it should remain where it is cared for the best .. for future generations. Personally i think Germany is a better place for that .. maybe (and i may be a bit political here) because some muslim countries - aside from social and structural instability - have had ... lets call it - ideologies - formed that destroyed artifacts for good. And no, i do not accuse Egypt to descent into such barbarism .. but i believe that chances are higher for its destruction or improper care than in Germany. With that said - there should be an agreement. The item should return into possession of Egypt, but Egypt should agree to allow it to be displayed and cared for in Germany - and should not demand reclamation. I think it is more an opportunity for both countries. Rather than fight over it .. both countries (or rather museums) should partner up and trade exhibition artifacts. The permanent resting place of this bust should be Berlin, but that should not exclude it to travel to Egypt every now and then. At the same time, other artifact should travel to Egypt .. artifacts that may not have gone there otherwise.

If we delve into the history, particularly of Egypt, we find that when Napoleon Bonaparte's forces entered Egypt, they were disheartened to find that it did not live up to their idealistic expectations. Rather than being the vibrant, culturally rich center they had envisioned, Egypt appeared neglected, impoverished, with its ancient monuments in a state of severe deterioration. It was the French and English who first recognized these ancient monuments as treasured pieces of history, not just structures of stone. They took the initiative to protect and conserve these artifacts, thus preventing their further degradation. Moreover, it was these European nations that took the initiative to decipher the ancient Egyptian language, contributing to our understanding and appreciation of this incredible civilization. Therefore, the knowledge and admiration we hold for ancient Egypt today is fundamentally an outcome of the European interest, initiative, and scholarly endeavor. This standpoint challenges the contemporary notion that these artifacts were "stolen", instead suggesting they were rescued and appreciated in a time when their original custodians did not give them the value they deserved. An important point to consider is the identity of modern-day Egyptians. They primarily identify themselves as Arabs, a group traditionally seen as contributing to the decline of the ancient Egyptian culture. Given this, it could be argued that the caretaking of ancient Egyptian artifacts and the custodianship of their history might be better managed by those who have shown the necessary respect and scholarly interest in this culture - in this case, the Europeans.

And while i am at it ....after you fixed your speech impediment you might wanna concentrate on the british Museum and see what thy'd like to "give back" let alone all the german art that is in private russian an american possesion after WWII....

I'm sure your opinion on cultural issues is of tremendous value, what with you not knowing the difference between a speech impediment and an accent.

That bust is not as harmless as it might look . It is not "just art" . It is belonging to bad magic and might become fatal , if connected with the other ppowerful energies at the Kairo Museum . It wasn't just a sudden nothing that Hitler was in love with it .

Muslims are not interested in statues as evidenced by their scriptures and what Isis and the Taliban have done. Considering how close Egypt has come to becoming a nation ruled by the Muslim Brotherhood and that Egyptian treasures come from the time of Jahiliya (dark ignorance) that’s pre-Islamic, Nefertiti is safer in Germany. Besides - had it originally been given to the Egyptians - we would really not have been too bothered about it. There are unbelievable treasures in the Cairo museum and they really have to do their own marketing rather than relying on Westerners to trumpet the importance of antiquity contra Jahiliya.

It belongs in Egypt it belongs to the Egyptian people it is their history and heritage the arrangements made between Germany and Egypt at that time are not important. It is an artifact that was in Egypt for thousands of years and needs to be returned. I have always felt strongly that historical artifacts belong to the cultures that created them, as a child I felt quite angry they were taken from where they belong. It’s ok if the Egyptian government decides to share them on loan for the world to enjoy but they belong where they were made.

@@MK67934 Us Egyptians were never black nor will we ever be. This appropriation/cancel culture is part of a larger agenda by the woke left. These fly by night cultures will not faze our great nation and heritage of 7,000 years. As our great president says "Tahya Misr,Tahya Misr,Tahya Misr"
