I vaguely remember that one of the piers was built in the wrong place and had to be demolished and rebuilt .. Is that correct or am I mixed up.

there was a problem with the concrete, it didn't hold up to the N cube test dodgy batch

Well said. It's a fantastic piece of engineering and was pioneering for its day. We'll never see such a grand and important project on Tyneside again.

The viaduct doesn't look bad but I think adding a red-brick façade might have made the concrete structure look better...!

I don't think the Byker Viaduct is much to look at. It certainly serves its purpose, but I always find big concrete structures like this rather ugly.
