Thank you for posting this video. At that time the Byrds were involved in a lawsuit with two former members of the band. This "tour" consisted of three shows in CA. My wife, and friends and I saw the show in Ventura. A really great night.

Reading over different comments and most are missing the point. This is for people that loved them during those times and anyone that "discovered" them in later years. Its the music that takes us back, no more, no less.

the great thing about musicians of the past is that they all knew how to appreciate and interpret eachother's work and even put aside egos and fame to play together just like any ordinary people jamming- only sounding 10 times better of course!

henrynevins didn't have to say any of that. Roger led the Byrds through several years of the most creative musical work that ever came out of rock music. Okay he wasn't the best songwriter, and some of their live performances sucked, but altogether they left a legacy unequaled in the history of entertainment which is why were even discussing it today. All through that work Roger was the guiding hand and polished, distinctive instrument player who brought real originality and virtuosity to a huge audience who otherwise would never have known it. This is why today he is so highly respected by so many artists including Bob Dylan.

Martin Langley ...his guitar playing on that Rickenbacker made the songs written by Clark, Seeger and Dylan and him become mesmerizingly beautiful.. wish there was a better film recording of this performance.

Too bad you can't really make out Hillman's incredible bass line in this, but it's a huge arena. On the original studio recording, Hillman does runs of "A" and "G" against the "G" and "A" chrds of the song; something which shouldn't even work musically, but it sounds fantastic!
@larrywharf1583
@larrywharf1583 7 жыл бұрын
Runs that start on F# and end on E, which definitely shouldn't work unless you're in Africa. Actually, Hugh Masekela (RIP) was on trumpet on the original recording, so maybe that's where the idea came from.

No, it’s not a huge arena. It’s the Ventura theater and it holds maybe 300 to 400 people.

To me Gene was the original voice of The Byrds until they ditched him, then it became McGuinn.

@@larrywharf1583 Clark left for several reasons - Management decided that McGuinn should do the lead vocals on all singles. The rest of the band resented the extra income Clark received in song writing royalties Clark didn't like to travel and had an overwhelming fear of flying.

No one disputes McGuinn was the voice of the Byrds, especially from '66 on, but Clark wrote many of their hits and sang lead on some of their early stuff. Like the Beatles and many other bands, the sum total of the Byrds original line up was far greater than all of them as solo artists. Unfortunately, by 1970 the Byrds devolved into a drugged out hippie band. They didn't release anything noteworthy during that phase. It was their early stuff that set trends and has stood the test of time.

love the idea, but this was a little hard to watch. With the timing and harmonies it's like, br REM or be Roger Mcguinn. You apparently can't be both.

Jim McGuinn is a dick to be touring with the old Byrds, jerks who left him flat and were always a lousy live act. It was Gene, Clarence and Skip who made the Byrds the best live act ever while McGuinn himself contributed little because he was too busy being coked up. Then he ends the Byrds in '73. Make up your mind Jim. Clarence would still be alive if you hadn't deep-sixed the efforts of three great musicians who covered your rear end to produce some great albums. Easy Rider never would have happened without Clarence White's genius.
