Theodora is easily one of my favorites great women of history. Any person would be lucky to have a partner half has strong and bold as she was.

The episode was partly for my sister, who is fascinated by Theodora and loves the story of her telling Justinian and his advisors to take a stand. She was an amazing woman!

She is also recognized as a saint of The Church both in the Eastern Orthodox (chalcedonian) and Oriental Orthodox. Her feast day is either November 14th (eastern) or June 28th (oriental).

A brilliant piece of research on one of history's most fascinating women. Brava! I am a huge ancient history fan and late in life have had the good fortune to move to Italy where I live in a small hill town in the Colli Sabini an hour north of Rome. I remember well the sense of awe I felt when I first saw the splendid mosaics of Theodora and Justinian in the Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna. This is my first of your videos and I look forward to watching many more.

Amazing video! I was trying to learn more about her just now but found out that the literature about her is really limited :(

A lot of more modern historians don't like the narrative that under her and after her Byzantium became one of the first nations in the world to have fully enshrined full women's rights into law and used her Christian faith to do this. This doesn't fit the modern narrative of absolutist religious patriarchy ruling until 100 years ago. Chroniclers at the time hated her for upsetting the social order so much and wrote a bunch of exaggerated negative stuff about her or refused to write about her because they were still bitter.

Thank you for this excellent video! Theodora is an intriguing person! I really learned a great deal about her from this video and I loved that she was such a progressive about women's rights and helping the poor underclasses!

We need a excellent portrait of emperess Hagia Theodora Mamikonian, the widow of emperor Theophilos, an iconoclast and mother of emperor Michael III. After the death of Theophilos she took over the regency (reign 842-855), changed the ikonoclast patriarch with an ikonophile one , a deed that determined the definitive end of the ikonoklast heresy during which innumerable antique , venerable statues, Icones and splendid mosaics were definitively lost. The church canonised she a saint. Her incorrupt body ist conserved in the most holy Theotokos church in Corfu. The catholic church venerates her memory on February 13.

"Empress who controlled Byzantium*, not Emperor". The empire itself was called Byzantium. Anything that was of the empire, such as people and goods, are Byzantine. Don't forget the building projects that Procopius attributes to Theodora; the major extensions made to the dungeons beneath the royal palace. It is said that many people who had in one way or another slighted or offended Theodora and shortly afterwards seemed to disappear into thin air, were actually breathing their last in the darkness of her newly built dungeons on her orders. 😱🙀 Hate her or love her, label her Saint or Prostitute, supportive wife, or scheming potential usurper to her husbands throne . . . There's absolutely no denying that she rose from the humblest of beginnings to become the single most powerful woman in all of Byzantium, if not at that particular point in time, the whole world.
