The French, English and Russian party were historical parties in the beginning of Greek independence. Range from Centre, Centre-Right and Right in that order.
@Alex_Fahey Жыл бұрын
In modern politics maybe, but it's just weird to use these anti-historical terms. The Russian party was the 'right' in power against the 'left' opposition parties challenging it, in the form of the English and French parties. At the time, they were abnormal parties but the left parties were radically progressive in several ways. The French party was invested in the idea of centralizing a modern Greek identity and seeking the formation of a Greek state encompasing the "natural borders" of Greece, to steal a French concept from their own revolutionary experiment, in contradiction to the previous order. The English party was popular with the merchant class due to its economical liberal ideals. Both the French and English parties were constitutional advocates seeking to limit the powers of a monarchy in favor of a democratic process - even if the English one was more moderate in its approach. They were both left of the norm, in other words. The Russian party, despite being staunchly conservative and orthodox, was also a one seeking to crush the capitalistic business class that was taking advantage of the unstable situation of Greece. It's the kind of party that would look communist if it wasn't for its traditionalist concerns like Orthodox Christianity. If anything, I think it would be more appropriate to call them left, center-left, and right to use your same order, and I think that still hides some of the nuance of the historical situation.

As to the history point there it’s very important to judge people by the morals of their time period, a great historical example of this is Henry Ford, who was extremely anti-semetic for the time he was alive repeatedly getting several complaints written to his newspaper and receiving a medal from the Nazi party. Henry Ford for example was an extremist while the organizer of St.Lewis worlds fair and 1904 Olympics which included an anthropology days which sought to scientifically prove which races athletically suited to which sports(shocker the Europeans and Americans won). This “scientific study” wasn’t an abnormality or extremist view just reinforcing already dominant narratives of scientific racism and imperial superiority. Both shows bigotry(and are unacceptable by modern standards) but without the context of their time it’s impossible to see what was a exceptional act of bigotry. This tends to work in the inverse as well, if we ascribe modern values to premodern times we can also overlook extreme acts of heroism that seem simple today(this tends to happen a lot less).

The average hunter-gatherers needed to know the following: how to hunt, how to hunt in groups, how to skin an animal, how to cook their meat, how to make animal pelts into clothes, how to clean their clothes, which plants are safe to eat, which plants have medicinal value, how to make a house, how to navigate without compasses or maps, and how to tell a story. Granted, not everyone in a tribe would have known all these skills, but no tribe would exist long without at least one member who could do each task. Now, go out and see how many people in your friend group have any of this knowledge.

Fun fact: this is actually completely realistic. Both Russia AND Greece tried to reform the Byzantine Empire. When Russia tried to make the Third Rome, they eventually tried to reach and take the Turks out, but failed. Greece had an entire political ideology around restoring Byzantium and taking Constantinople, called the Megali Idea! The Megali Idea also failed when Turkey beat them back, and after the monarchy was abolished, there was no one to put on the throne of Eastern Rome.

Regarding your opening statement about Byzantium having been gone for almost 400 years by Vic3: "The Megali Idea (Greek: Μεγάλη Ιδέα, romanized: Megáli Idéa, lit. 'Great Idea') is a nationalist and irredentist concept that expresses the goal of reviving the Byzantine Empire, by establishing a Greek state, which would include the large Greek populations that were still under Ottoman rule after the end of the Greek War of Independence (1821-1828) and all the regions that had large Greek populations (parts of the Southern Balkans, Anatolia and Cyprus)." so there is a Historically Relevant reason for it to be a formable in Vic3, and its Journal Entry is well named for that reason.

The Greeks reclaiming their eastern roman empire identity from the Ottomans, essentially undoing the damage done since the fall of Constantinople, makes more sense than Germany deciding to undo confederation and just go back to being a loose network of city-states. Remember that the HRE was not a singular government, it was a network of contiguous states. The German people would basically be like "wait, we just spent the last hundred years unifying and confederating and becoming stronger as a result, and you want to go back to being a bunch of individual cities?"
