I have had Ku band FTA for 8 or 9 years. I have recently seen videos where people are using the C band antennas. I put out an ad looking for one and got no response. Thought I was remembering a dream. I was an adventurous kid, used to hunt squirrels off the peak of the garage roof with my bolt action .22. I was pretty sure I remembered for the first year or two there being a massive satellite dish on the top of my father's garage. He must have took it down at some point because most of my memory there it wasn't on the roof. It felt kind of like a dream because i couldnt imagine why he wouldve had such a large dish on the garage roof. Been really cool to learn a bit about c-band satellite. I'm gonna have to ask him about it when it isn't 2am.

With some minor modifications to the LNB you can actually use these dishes as a simple radio telescope. You can either then use a National Instruments card to digitise the signal after further down conversion (or equivalent) or down convert to audio and listen.

When I got into this hobby I tried the new style LNBF and had reception issues. So I bought a dish mover that not only moved the jack screw but also powered the servo motor. Then after using an older lnb that still worked I bought a commercial LNBF to mount onto the feed horn. I can tell you for certain that the old style lnb on a feed horn with actuator works far better then the new style. They even have feed horns now that you mount 2 lnb’s on so you don’t have to have a servo motor which is what the cable companies use, as I used to mow the local cable companies downlink location. Interestingly all of their dishes were 16’ stationary solid dishes and many had multiple feed horns to receive multiple satellites. I was lucky enough to talk to a technician once while mowing there and was able to see the current commercial receiver equipment currently used to decipher encrypted signals. While this is a hobby, there is plenty of watchable stuff on there and if you speak Spanish there is a goldmine of really good channels to watch. It’s also fun to see what other countries have to watch as well.

@@jeremycook4670 I have the titanium ASC1 dish mover that has servo polarization changes done by the voltage sent by the receiver. It workS like it did in the old days. At 10:19 - You can power those actuators off a 12 volt battery charger. It is usually the black and white wire connections under the actuator cover on the terminal strip. Reversing the polarity reverses the travel direction. That is how i just changed one of my dish positions last week. I also attach my coax to one of the legs or the button hook and run it back to the dish pivot point and then down the mounting pipe. This prevents the wind from "working" the coax cable which I found will eventually lead to a failure. I also retrofit all of the original threaded hardware with grade 316 alloy stainless steel which I purchase from McMaster on the internet. Grade 304 aka 18-8 stainless fasteners are cheaper but they seem to strip out and are not reusable. I have been working on and installing my dishes since 1992 and so far so good.

I designed and built 16 foot C band dish systems back in the late 70's in Winnipeg. They needed to be large to get the signal/noise ratio acceptable, as the better LNB's for that band had noise figures of 110'K. Compare that with today's Ku band LNB noise of 0.7'K. Back then there was NO encryption on the signal, so simple analog receivers worked fine. Entering the 80's, the only remaining analog signals were for religious channels.

Interesting I was not aware these Satellites were still operating. In mid 80s I was a Wineguard , Channel master and a few lesser known brands. Drake was good. I need to look into C-band again some time. Oh those originals LNBs were NOT LNBs they were LNAs with a Block down converter attached but usually attached in line at the poll. The LNAs were weak at first then just got better and better. I agree with the folks that do not agree with your mounting system. You will get damage at some point. Just dig a hole put a st-ought pipe and 3 or 5 bags of cement then some water. It would likely be less work than your current unstable system. Most places rarely get high wind but the once every two or 3 year wind will take those from you and Could cause Damage to someone else and you could be liable. So post and cement and post hole digger. Also. The mesh as compaired to solid makes less than 2% differance in high wind as compaired to solid. You may get away with this but someday the wind will take those. Think of t as insurance agaist loss and liability. Dishes have been torn loose by wind and damaged expensive cars trucks houses and more importanty people. Its easy. And no you do not dig up pole and cement from where they came from. Its less than 5 hours work. Plus makes good lighting ground.

@@davidkurzdorfer6402 It’s still a terrible loss for you to bear. I like making videos to make people aware of free satellite TV and antenna stuff, and it’s a good feeling knowing that my videos are helpful to some people. Thanks again for watching my videos and for the nice comments, I really appreciate it. 📡

That Zephyr antenna needs a much more stable mount. Even if it is only being used for timing, you have way too much movement.
@NorthcoasterHobby2 жыл бұрын
I’ve since taken it down. It was staked into the ground. Didn’t move at all while it was there: ://kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpbGlahoqqqraaM I’d like to put it back up, but I’ll probably put it somewhere else. It was there for testing.

Growing up in the late 70s, early 80s, I thought anyone that owned these were wealthy, despite being comparable to cable TV offerings.

I will have to do research on what is on C band in 2022, I have a 3 meter dish outside but the last time I used it there was not much on but porn stations and news from other countries
@NorthcoasterHobby2 жыл бұрын
Generally you get the same type of channels received locally with an antenna. But also news feeds, international channels and interesting stuff not available from an antenna or cable. But no actual pay TV cable channels. Those are encrypted. And no adult channels. That’s not what the free satellite TV hobby is about in my opinion.📡

My dad used to have a C band dish years ago until they started going digital and it was gonna cost a bit to be able to receive the digital. So he went with dish instead.
@NorthcoasterHobby2 жыл бұрын
Receivers are much less expensive these days than they were during the digital transition.

How many channels do you get
@NorthcoasterHobby2 жыл бұрын
Between TV and radio channels, there’s hundreds across all satellites.

Just buy a new actuator and be done with it, lots more fun scanning the skys, then maybe one dish vertical and one horizontal. Upgrade that coax too ;)
@NorthcoasterHobby2 жыл бұрын
There’s more than one way to do things. I have plenty of fun outside with a wrench and meter moving my dishes around. Coax hasn’t caused any problems either. Thanks for watching!

All this shop is sattle lite that's all. I wanna know how. Everybody know you need a sattle lite. What about the rest of the set up?

There’s over 200 other videos on my channel covering all of that. Have a look.
If you want to see a dish that isn't built like a screen door look for a unit called birdview. They are one piece spun aluminum gear drive units. They are made much better than that flimsy stuff in the video
@NorthcoasterHobby2 жыл бұрын
I looked up the Birdview dishes you mentioned. They look like well-built dishes. However the dishes you see in my video are in no way flimsy. They’ve survived 30 years of harsh Canadian winters and still work perfectly. Thanks for watching.
